Jira (PDB-3526) Add online index rebuild capability to PuppetDB
Title: Message Title Nick Walker updated an issue PuppetDB / PDB-3526 Add online index rebuild capability to PuppetDB Change By: Nick Walker h1. BackgroundRebuilding indexes is a common maintenance recommendation for PostgreSQL databases. However, rebuilding an index is a blocking activity so customers that require little to no downtime don't like to rebuild indexes and are likely giving up performance because of it. This is one of the main reasons that pg_repack exists in addition to it's ability to reduce table bloat. h1. PuppetDB suggestionSince rebuilding indexes is a good idea but we don't want downtime the internet generally recommends creating a new index with the CONCURRENTLY flag which is non-blocking then dropping the existing index and renaming the new one to match the existing name. For example: the alter constraint page in the postgresql docs recommends exactly what I do in the script. Scroll to the very bottom of this page https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/sql-altertable.html We should have a facility for accomplishing the above task and I have two queries that produce that for the indexes in any postgresql database. Assuming you place the attachments in /tmp you can run them and execute their output as follows. {code}su - postgres -s /bin/bash -c "psql -d pe-puppetdb -f /tmp/online_rebuild_index_script -qt" > /tmp/rebuild_indexes.sqlsu - postgres -s /bin/bash -c "psql -d pe-puppetdb -f /tmp/rebuild_indexes.sql -q"su - postgres -s /bin/bash -c "psql -d pe-puppetdb -f /tmp/online_rebuild_unique_constraints.sql -qt" > /tmp/rebuild_unique_constraints.sqlsu - postgres -s /bin/bash -c "psql -d pe-puppetdb -f /tmp/rebuild_unique_constraints.sql -q"{code}h1. Caveats The first script rebuilds all indexes that don't enforce constraints. The second script rebuilds all unique constraints that don't have further dependencies. In my counting that currently leaves the certnames_transform_certname_key unique index out because numerous FKs depend on it to make sure that certname is unique. Otherwise all indexes are rebuilt by the combination of the two scripts. Add Comment

Find an alternative solution that doesn't require CSIDL The Puppet solution is a bit more complicated as it will need to produce the same api where Dir is adorned with new constants. Facter only uses COMMON_APPDATA and only in one spot. See https://gist.github.com/Iristyle/057c5560dbe64532fd1770a36e51f805 for more details on why this is important. Title: Message Title Erik Hansen updated an issue Puppet / PUP-7589 install.bash script does not restart services on AIX Change By: Erik Hansen If I run the install.bash script in order to upgrade an AIX agent the puppet / pxp-agent / mcollective services don't get restarted (they do on other platforms). This was observed upgrading the agent packages from 1.5.2 (and also from 1.7.2) to 1.10.1This can cause issues as the stale process in AIX can cause errors in puppet's scheduled runs.To reproduce:* Install agent package puppet-agent-1.5.2-1.aix7.1.ppc.rpm on AIX 7.1* connect the agent to a master on 2016.4.5* run the bash installer:{noformat}curl -1 https://pe-201643-master.example.com:8140/packages/current/install.bash | sed -e "s/[!\! ]bash/bash -x/" |bash -x 2>&1 |tee /tmp/install_debug.out{noformat}You can see in the output file that the services never get a restart, you can also see this by checking the output of: 'ps -ef | egrep 'puppet|pxp|mcoll' | grep -v grep'{noformat}root 9568366 3277006 0 08:21:09 - 0:00 /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/bin/ruby /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/bin/mcollectived --config=/etc/puppetlabs/mcollective/server.cfg --no-daemonizeroot 10354832 3277006 0 08:21:07 - 0:00 /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/bin/pxp-agent --foregroundroot 11993134 3277006 0 08:21:03 - 0:01 /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/bin/ruby /opt/puppetlabs/bin/puppet agent --no-daemonize{noformat}Attaching debug output from an AIX agent as well as from a RedHat agent where all three services refresh. Jira (PUP-3042) If a catalog has a dependency cycle, it does not count as failed
Title: Message Title Mike Kelly commented on PUP-3042 Re: If a catalog has a dependency cycle, it does not count as failed Henrik Lindberg, yes, I just picked 2 because there were 2 resources in that circular dependency, but I don't think the number matters too much. I think the real thing I'd expect to see on the PE dashboard if an agent run failed like this would be a clear, red "failed" indicator on the overview page, radiator, etc. Once I see that, then I'd drill down into the "last report", and see the log messages explaining the root cause. So, reading the report YAML again, perhaps the most sensible location to tweak is: events: !ruby/object:Puppet::Util::Metric name: events label: Events values: - - total - Total - 0 - - failure - Failure
Jira (PUP-3042) If a catalog has a dependency cycle, it does not count as failed
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-3042 Re: If a catalog has a dependency cycle, it does not count as failed Adam Bottchen I got that - but I don't know how the failure should be encoded in the report for PE to show it the right way. Mike Kelly Was the number 2 picked because there were 2 in the circular dependency? Sometimes that can be a very long chain, and the error may be in just one place (the place that formed the chain - but which one of the "link" is wrong is impossible to say. This is more of a general error. There are errors in the log entry in the report that describes the problem even. PE could pick that up and display it. Now puppet resource user will correctly list both users, separately, as existing on the system. Jira (PUP-6060) Change node_cache_terminus default to nil
Title: Message Title Moses Mendoza updated an issue Puppet / PUP-6060 Change node_cache_terminus default to nil Change By: Moses Mendoza Release Notes Summary: In puppet 5.0, by default puppet will no longer write node yaml files to its cache. This cache was once used in workflows with external tooling needing a list of nodes, but with the advent of puppetdb that is now the best/correct way to retrieve information about nodes. If a user wishes to retain the 4.x behavior, add the setting `node_cache_terminus = write_only_yaml`. Note that `write_only_yaml` is deprecated, and users are encouraged to migrate to puppetdb based workflows for retrieving node information. Jira (PUP-2280) If a resource is triggered by a refresh, and it fails, puppet doesn't treat it as a failure
Title: Message Title Moses Mendoza commented on PUP-2280 Re: If a resource is triggered by a refresh, and it fails, puppet doesn't treat it as a failure Henrik Lindberg - I was able to get Charlie Sharpsteen's example to replicate the issue without any trouble - not sure about the enumerable error. Looks like master has diverged from the code he linked (3.5.1) but I checked in lib/puppet/transaction.rb and I think the root cause remains the same - it seems like basically anywhere we ascertain that a resource has failed?, we should also be checking if that resource failed_to_restart?. We first attempted to fix this bug with https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/5670, but we didn't handle the `failed_to_restart?` case. Note that if we proceed with this ticket, this test should start failing: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/spec/integration/transaction_spec.rb#L236-L267 - that was added apparently by Luke over 7 years ago in https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/9c867e6d79dcc56cd34683c9a339dc729ad2d291, but it does imply the current behavior was at least a design decision and not accidental. In any case, again, I think the resolution is to check for both `failed?` and `failed_to_restart?` - I.e., a diff that would look something like this: diff --git a/lib/puppet/transaction.rb b/lib/puppet/transaction.rb index b4ad1f9..4815a77 100644 --- a/lib/puppet/transaction.rb +++ b/lib/puppet/transaction.rb @@ -181,7 +181,7 @@ class Puppet::Transaction # Are there any failed resources in this transaction?
