h1. BackgroundRebuilding indexes is a common maintenance recommendation for PostgreSQL databases. However, rebuilding an index is a blocking activity so customers that require little to no downtime don't like to rebuild indexes and are likely giving up performance because of it. This is one of the main reasons that pg_repack exists in addition to it's ability to reduce table bloat. h1. PuppetDB suggestionSince rebuilding indexes is a good idea but we don't want downtime the internet generally recommends creating a new index with the CONCURRENTLY flag which is non-blocking then dropping the existing index and renaming the new one to match the existing name. For example: the alter constraint page in the postgresql docs recommends exactly what I do in the script. Scroll to the very bottom of this page https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/sql-altertable.html We should have a facility for accomplishing the above task and I have two queries that produce that for the indexes in any postgresql database. Caveats The first script rebuilds all indexes that don't enforce constraints. The second script rebuilds all unique constraints that don't have further dependencies. In my counting that currently leaves the certnames_transform_certname_key unique index out because numerous FKs depend on it to make sure that certname is unique. Otherwise all indexes are rebuilt by the combination of the two scripts.

Find an alternative solution that doesn't require CSIDL The Puppet solution is a bit more complicated as it will need to produce the same api where Dir is adorned with new constants. Facter only uses COMMON_APPDATA and only in one spot. See https://gist.github.com/Iristyle/057c5560dbe64532fd1770a36e51f805 for more details on why this is important. A follow up to this should remove the actual gem from vendored Ruby.

If I run the install.bash script in order to upgrade an AIX agent the puppet / pxp-agent / mcollective services don't get restarted (they do on other platforms). Sometimes that can be a very long chain, and the error may be in just one place (the place that formed the chain - but which one of the "link" is wrong is impossible to say. This is more of a general error. There are errors in the log entry in the report that describes the problem even. PE could pick that up and display it. What if the error was changed to a warning instead? I can see lots of opportunity for mistakes if it just silently ate the error. For example,

is a perfectly reasonable bit of code to use accidentally and if Puppet didn't warn you, you might never know.

We should look at adding adding facts to puppet that include useful puppet agent facts
Maybe something like this (From https://github.com/LMacchi/puppet_agent_settings)

Looks like master has diverged from the code he linked (3.5.1) but I checked in lib/puppet/transaction.rb and I think the root cause remains the same - it seems like basically anywhere we ascertain that a resource has failed?, we should also be checking if that resource failed_to_restart?. We first attempted to fix this bug with https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/5670, but we didn't handle the `failed_to_restart?` case. Note that if we proceed with this ticket, this test should start failing: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/spec/integration/transaction_spec.rb#L236-L267 - that was added apparently by Luke over 7 years ago in https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/9c867e6d79dcc56cd34683c9a339dc729ad2d291, but it does imply the current behavior was at least a design decision and not accidental. I tried to reproduce this with a site.pp containing the following:

Then run an agent against the environment with that site.pp The output is:
