convert_xid is called from change_privileges, change_user and change_group helpers in the same utils.
change_user/group/priveleges are called by posix exec, ssh_authorized_key parsed provider, and file providers, (via #asuser) and the master application (sigh).
it appears to me that convert_xid in this change returns the local user id/group id if ldap/etc are unreachable. this makes a lot of assumptions.
Branan Riley i only dug into this briefly. if you have more context, is there any concern that the local gid/uid is being used here which wouldn't be the same that ldap/AD might return and could result in user escalation privs?
manifests can always specify uid/gid as exec options. this feels like a safe, small change to me

  Re: POSIX Exec throws error when group has no name

This is a very small, one line change that is expensive to test. I'm considering resolving this with out additional testing. Note that dealing with groups for puppet has been difficult because each platform implements groups with slight differences.
Note that groups in Macs must have names.

PUP-5047(https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-5047)
The reproduction steps that you outlined in the ticket seem reasonable. I did not attempt to set up an LDAP server to test it. I did attempt to simply create a GID without a name. Although this is trivial to do on a linux system, I was unsuccessful in doing this on OS X 10.10. The `dcsl` system uses the `RecordName` to create the path of the resource. So, it cannot create one without it and removing the the name causes the record to become inaccessible.
```
cannot create gid record without name v29yt4ujo6rs45p:~ root# dscl . -create gid 1002 create: Invalid Path
successfully create record with name v29yt4ujo6rs45p:~ root# dscl . -create /groups/bar gid 1002
v29yt4ujo6rs45p:~ root# dscl . -read /groups/bar AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default GeneratedUID: 5975DBDB-4829-42EB-AB21-A9661301F282 PrimaryGroupID: 1002 RecordName: bar RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups
Removing the RecordName makes the record inaccessible v29yt4ujo6rs45p:~ root# dscl . -change /groups/bar RecordName bar '' v29yt4ujo6rs45p:~ root# dscl . -read /groups/bar  DS Error: -14136 (eDSRecordNotFound) ```
The issue appears to only affect OS X. I was able to successfully create a gid without a name on a linux system and puppet had no problem managing the resource on the affected version of puppet.
We are having the exact same issue as reported originally in the ticket as well as the dependency cycle one. Definitely a major issue with large deployments.
 A customer has noticed that they are getting It's possible to get a  successful agent run  reports  report  that on closer inspection include errors  (ticket located here: https://puppetlabs . zendesk.com/agent/tickets/25207).  The For instance, an  error points to a failure with the Chocolatey provider. Because the provider failed out, it did not return a complete list of resources to manage, and the agent run completes successfully on this smaller catalog without raising an alarm. The issue with the Chocolatey provider was fixed in a later version of that module, however the overall issue There  is  still a problem: there is  no way for an administrator to notice this problem and correct it without drilling down into green agent reports to confirm whether an error has occurred or not. On large scale deployments this solution rapidly becomes unmanageable.Agent runs need to return some condition when providers fail that highlights that this has occurred. There needs to be a scaleable way to monitor and report on this kind of failure.
This is a problem in Ruby with the regular _expression_ that matches against a valid variable name. The regular _expression_ match never returns. This started (it appears) when a bug in the regular _expression_ was fixed.
In patterns.rb:
  VAR_NAME = %r{\A(?:(::)?[a-z]\w*)*(?:(::)?[a-z_]\w*)\z}
Something similar happens if the entire run fails due to a cycle in the graph.
For example...
matthaus@wyclef-2  #> puppet apply -e 'file {"/tmp/foo": ensure => present, require => File["/tmp/foo"],}'
Notice: Compiled catalog for localhost in environment production in 0.08 seconds
Error: Failed to apply catalog: Found 1 dependency cycle:
(File[/tmp/foo] => File[/tmp/foo])
Try the '--graph' option and opening the resulting '.dot' file in OmniGraffle or GraphViz
matthaus@wyclef-2  #> echo $?
1
matthaus@wyclef-2  #> irb
BTW, I'd like to take the opportunity to ask something. Is there any kind of watchdog that can be configured at puppetserver level to automatically destroy instances that are misbehaving like these ones (perhaps based on the CPU wall time, age...)? We're already using over here max-requests-per-instance but for obvious reasons it's not useful in this case. Bugs like this one are quite dangerous and can quickly degrade the performance of a production system. The more agents exercising the bad code and triggering the issue, the faster the load goes up. There should be a way to tell Puppetserver how to protect itself.
This ticket has been hanging in limbo for more than two years. Facter 3 is in C; I briefly experimented on an ubuntu 16.04 LTS system with vlans, strange VLAN names (names with dots and underscores) and "facter --show-legacy" and "facter networking.interfaces" amoung other little tests. I couldn't find any obvious problems in this space.
I'm closing this bug; Geoff Nichols, Michael Smith, Piotr Misiak if you feel this is appropriate, please reopen this bug and comment.
This ticket's merge sha 6ded3be8299a7f1863b4b0656ba7d14837f39c1b did not get picked up in the Aug 3 merge up from facter 3.6.x to 3.7.x, nor in the merge to master, and is not present in the current passing build of puppet-agent.
Status Update: This bug's commit is e9e64612e2b58295367913c70ee218765cf91837 in puppetlabs/puppet, merged Aug 7. Current passing puppet-agent for 5.1.x is 381a34773, and puppet-agent at this sha contains puppet 80c1d96.
No, e9e64612e2b58295367913c70ee218765cf91837 is is not an ancestor of 80c1d96c34ec924c76999b112a694cf546a53629 for puppetlabs/puppet
Checked using ! platform puppet as well as checking out puppetlabs/puppet at 80c1d96c34 and looking at the log.
Would it make sense to have atboot => false be an alias for options => noauto?
I don't thinks so, as having the ability to not update /etc/fstab but mount a filesystem is useful.
