Re: Lookup CLI should use RBAC token if available for PuppetDB

The difficulty is lookup uses the indirector to retrieve the node. In PE this calls the classifier terminus, which also uses the indirector to retrieve facts using the terminus provided by puppetdb. So we would need to provide REST specific options in the indirector request (and try to thread the credentials through) or have the puppetdb terminus load the credentials itself. The latter seems doable to me.

Could we just add a lookup_option like supports_pcore: true. If set, then deserialize whatever the lookup returns to an instance of Puppet::LookupValue (currently defined as RichData). Then pass that through the normal convert_to logic in: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/d567575ba8c5b2c903044b80b0adaab176c8da5d/lib/puppet/pops/lookup/lookup_adapter.rb#L72

This issue exists the agent uses the indirector to save to the report to the rest terminus and the yaml cache terminus. If the main terminus raises, then the cache terminus' save method is never called https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/d567575ba8c5b2c903044b80b0adaab176c8da5d/lib/puppet/indirector/indirection.rb#L316-L319 The agent could decouple those by saving to the main terminus using ignore_cache_terminus: true and saving to the cache using ignore_terminus: true in an ensure block.

Relying on metadata.json is problematic, because the module may be installed on puppetserver, but pluginsynced to agents on different platforms and earlier versions. Given Puppet 3 & 4 are so old, I'm going to close this out. Please reopen if this is still an issue with more modern puppet versions.

So I did a profiling on calling `Facter.value(:kernel)` on Facter 4 and Facter 2 and Facter 4 is noticeably slower(0.13s vs 0.01s). From the call tree seems that the execution API is slower in Facter 4. Attached are the traces for each call: facter2.html - trace for calling `Facter.value(:kernel) with facter 2 Thread: 1580, Fiber: 1560 (100.00% ~ 0.010857273999135941) facter4.html - trace for calling `Facter.value(:kernel) with facter 4 Thread: 2160, Fiber: 2140 (37.49% ~ 0.13846525101689622) Thread: 2200, Fiber: 2180 (20.90% ~ 0.13846525101689622) Thread: 2240, Fiber: 2220 (20.83% ~ 0.13846525101689622) Thread: 2280, Fiber: 2260 (20.78% ~ 0.13846525101689622) facter4_patched.html - trace for calling `Facter.value(:kernel) with facter 4 without hitting the resolver. Locally I managed to get an improvement of around 20% when running a single test file from puppet-nginx module, for a single OS

The issue is not about per-module data. That works fine. The issue is about environment data specifically when one uses %{module_name} in hiera.yaml. Here is a simple example:

 vagrant@ubuntu-focal:/vagrant/environment/testing$ tree .

 .
