I have double-verified that I have no mode attributes without quotes both with linux shell 'find xargs grep' and with the current master of puppet-lint which checks for unquoted mode attributes. Also note that the official PE installer is throwing this warning. NC, the settings catalog. It would be beneficial if the error message included the path of the file for which the mode is wrong. Ping Josh Cooper - I think including the 'title' in the deprecation message should be easy to add, and possibly file/line source reference for the resource (if they are indeed included in the resource that is causing trouble (that is not the case if it comes via internal APIs). It would be easy to include this information in the deprecation warning. We have access to the resource and the necessary data. For example, given {{mode.pp}:
file { '/tmp/foo':
ensure => file,
mode => 0644,
}
When applying the manifest, we have access to the mode property's resource when issuing the deprecation warning:
(rdb:2) resource.title
"/tmp/foo"
(rdb:2) resource.file
"/Users/josh/work/puppet/mode.pp"
(rdb:2) resource.line

It turns out that the warning PE 3.7.2 was throwing was not actually about modes but rather password attributes for the user resource. This would be a bug except in PE 3.8 the warning became an error with specific error location output which is how I discovered the error in the first place. Therefore the bug and improvement are present in PE 3.8. You can probably close this now.
