If you want to use that fact, but are hitting this issue and put the environment setting in the [agent] section to avoid it, then you would kind of be out of luck. Jira (PUP-6048) error running puppet with non existing and non default environment
Title: Message Title Reinhard Vicinus commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment I would at least also update the following section of the documentation: Assigning Environments Via the Agent’s Config File In puppet.conf on each agent node, you can set the environment setting in either the agent or main config section. And make it clear, that if the agent has no directory based environments, because it is no master node and uses only remote environments from the master nodes, then the environment should be set in the agent section of puppet.conf. Conversely if there are directory based environments, then setting the environment via the main section is the correct approach. I'm not sure if there are exceptions to this rule, at the moment I can't think of any. I closed the pull request and removed the link to it. Please let me know if that was a mistake, that I won't repeat it the next time. Add Comment

Title: Message Title Kylo Ginsberg commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment The other issue I was thinking of was PUP-4954 , but it's actually different in scope. Just mentioning that here for completeness. Josh P's idea of adding a new setting to specify the environment an agent asks of its master could fly although: a) I have a little concern about how easy it will be to disentangle use (3) from uses (1) and (2) b) I'm wondering how that would interact with the agent-specified ("canary") workflows. /cc Michael Smith who has looked into the agent-specified environment workflows a fair bit. Jira (PUP-6048) error running puppet with non existing and non default environment
Title: Message Title Michael Smith commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment Agreed that the environment setting means multiple things, and gets confusing. puppet help doesn't really need to know the environment, so I agree that could be made to work without it present. puppet apply certainly requires the environment directory, and puppet agent obviously doesn't. Most other commands expect an environment and will make use of it, but shouldn't require one because they make sense to run on an agent (facts, resource, config); those could potentially be changed to verify the environment setting matches the last cached run to ensure they're run in a consistent environment, but make the environment directory optional. I think it'd be some work - but not too messy - to identify those commands and create a workflow for verified optional directory environments. Switching between agent and apply runs would then potentially require some cleanup if you also want to change environments. Canary workflows are interesting more for their side-effects than direct requirements: they're just another puppet agent run, so they'll work fine if the local directory environment doesn't exist. However, after doing a canary run you have a different environment cached locally; if you want to then perform other operations that operate on an environment, it makes sense to error if the environment isn't the canary environment you just joined (until you do another puppet agent run to rejoin the original environment). That won't happen currently, but would happen given the workflow I mentioned above where it verifies against the cached environment. Jira (PUP-6048) error running puppet with non existing and non default environment
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment We should not confuse "a directory containing things for an environment" with an actual instance of an Environment used inside Puppet at runtime. There is always an Environment when something runs even if it is just the root environment consisting only of the puppet installation. Since most things can be delivered in modules, and modules can be different in different environments commands that operate on such things must naturally have access to an environment. As an example, asking for help for something that only exists in one environment. Custom facts that only exists in one environment etc. We must also differentiate between a local environment and one that is remote. In the master and apply cases the environment is local (it exists on disk on the host). On an agent, it can be one or the other depending on if it is configured to do both masterless and master controlled runs. Something that is configured for master runs naturally always has a local root environment (the installed puppet). Any act that involves an environment that is remote should ideally make sure that the local information about the remote environment is up to date (including if it exists or not), but it could possibly be allowed to act on its current local state. Is the distinction between local and remote controlled by using --mode master or --mode agent ? How do you otherwise know when asking for help about something where it is supposed to get the information from? Title: Message Title Joshua Partlow commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment Right, thinking about it afterwords, I realized that the problem is that we're using the environment setting to mean multiple things. 1) environment => the codepath the compiler should use when loading manifests 2) environment => the libpath Puppet uses as (one) of the paths to search for code relating to its own execution (faces, etc.) 3) environment => the environment we want the agent to place in its requests to the master If you are using an ENC, then you don't need to use case 3, but if you are relying on the agent's configuration to assign the environment, then yes you run into this issue where the environment directory needs to be present on the agent to avoid other invocations of puppet from complaining when they are using case 2 locally on the agent. Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-6048 Re: error running puppet with non existing and non default environment Reinhard Vicinus While it can be argued that puppet help should always work, you should not use environments that do not exist. What would be meaningful about that? The environment is the top level container for all the puppet things, if you use one that does not exist that could only mean that the container is empty - no code, no modulepath, no modules, no manifests, no data, nothing. While there are defaults for those, they apply to something that should exist and relative to where it exists. So, a bit confused about what it is you are trying to do here...
