Restarting the master resolved the problems. The real issue here is that the puppetserver package is broken, because the server needs to be restarted if the puppet-agent package changes, but the puppetserver spec file lacks a %triggerpostun trigger on the puppet-agent package. (See PA-681 for more information and a suggested fix.) Puppet server loads the puppet ruby runtime version 4.7. The new runtime is installed. Puppet server is unaware of this. The function strftime from 4.8 is autoloaded. It doesn't require puppet/pops/time/* because it assumes it's already there. It isn't (doesn't exist in the loaded runtime). An error about the missing module is raised. This is not the first time an ticket has been created because of updates without restarting Puppet server. I'm concerned that things might go really wrong due to this in the future. Chris Price, ould it be possible for Puppet server to detect that it's code-base changed somehow and die immediately with some informative message? Perhaps by periodically checking the timestamp of the version file and load/verify if it changes? It suspect it's a matter of missing ruby require for the module Puppet::Pops::Time. The strfime should be fully backward compatible with the stdlib version, even if it prints a deprecation warning. Using a Timestamp.new() will not work since it requires rich datatype support in the catalog.
