The current behavior is that we print the error (as before): Error: /Stage[main]/Main/File[/tmp/foo.html]: Could not evaluate: Could not retrieve information from environment production source(s) https://puppet.com/notareallink When running with debug, we print additional information about all HTTP calls: Debug: Creating new connection for https://puppet.com:443 Debug: Starting connection for https://puppet.com:443 Debug: Using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 Debug: HTTP HEAD https://puppet.com/notareallink returned 404 Not Found Debug: Caching connection for https://puppet.com:443 Error: /Stage[main]/Main/File[/tmp/foo.html]: Could not evaluate: Could not retrieve information from environment production source(s) https://puppet.com/notareallink While it would be nice to surface additional information about the error in non-debug runs, we don't have plans on implementing that, so I'm going to close this. Using a file resource with the source set to a link. If there is an error from the server (eg. a 500 error in my case) it should print that to the terminal in the error message. Currently the return code is only available when running puppet with the -d flag
