That's not the point. Puppet doesn't know your usecase. In general, exported
resources are used to distribute data from one set of hosts to another one.
Most prominent example being SSH host keys, which are usually exported by all
your hosts and then imported by all others.

So it is generally possible that an exported file resource is being

1. exported by multiple hosts
2. used by multiple (other) hosts

Thus, Puppet needs to take some precautions to avoid possible conflicts. That
being said, I don't think that "file" resources are a good fit for exporting at
all.

You create multiple resources here (one for each host), which ALL try
to manage the SAME file ("/etc/something.conf"). But one file can only
be managed by one resource. That needs to be something like
"/etc/something_${host}.conf"

Errh, if there was a regression introduced in release X.0, why isn't it
fixed immediately after getting known with an X.1 release? Everyone

cloud-based Jira instance. As it seems, I can not login to this instance
anymore, neither with the credentials I used on the old Jira, nor with my

Hi,

I'm currently stuck with a problem where resource defaults from site.pp are not
applied, for example:

if $facts['custom'] == 'some value' {

Some_resource { attribute => lookup('some.key'), }

notify { lookup('some.key'): }

notify { $facts['custom']: }

}

The two notifications appear in the report, with expected values, but the
default value for "attribute" of "Some_resource" doesn't get set. Any idea what
I'm doing wrong here?

Your provider can read arbitrary files on the agent it is running on.
This is what other providers also do, see the nexus3_rest module on
Puppet Forge for an example. It needs credentials to be able to manage
resources on a Nexus3 repository server, which it expects to be stored
somewhere in /etc/puppet.

So essentially, in the class that uses your provider, create such a
credential/configuration file before using any resources your provider
provides.

I've always found NM to be of most value on Laptops, where I need to be able to
connect to different (WiFi) networks or VPNs every now and then. However, for
everything with a "static" (as in "always in the same network") connection, I
use systemd-networkd, which can be easily managed through text files.

BTW: Both, NM and systemd-networkd, can be managed with Netplan, which uses
simple YAML files for configuration.

generated from another array (or hash).

For example:

$array = [1, 2, 3].map |$num| { "This is element number ${num}."}

Would result in $array like:

[
  "This is element number 1.",
  "This is element number 2.",
  "This is element number 3."
]

Again, see the example in your first link.

The first link you posted already has the answer. Puppet variables are
immutable so you can't create an empty array and then add vaules to it. It must
be done in one step and, as that answer says, you'll have to use the map

I'd enhance that request to upcoming major releases of all the major
(or supported) Linux distributions, like Debian, Ubuntu (LTS), ...

For Debian, for example, this could already happen when "testing" is
frozen (or even for "testing" in general ;-)). This would guarantee
availability of Puppet packages as soon as the new distribution release
ships.

Well, it works the same regardless of how it's installed. Anyway,
installation (from packages) on Linux depends on which distribution
family (RedHat or Debian) you're using. RedHat family distributions

yum and/or dnf for package management, while Debian family
distributions (Debian, Ubuntu) use the Debian package manager (dpkg,
with apt wrapped around it). The documentation contains detailed

vanilla Ubuntu).

Yes, you can purge them after a certain amount of time, a good measure
would be one or two weeks (maybe you might want to know when things
started to break). There are also some report processors available out
there to ease reading. We, for example, use https://theforeman.org for
this (it's a bit overkill, I know, but it's still the best tool when it
comes to visualize Puppet reports).

I don't think you need to specify these options at all if everything is
configured correctly. I have the following hiera.yaml in my Puppet
environments:

- ...
- common.yaml

With this in place I can simply type "eyaml edit common.yaml" or "eyaml
encrypt -s 'something'", w/o specifying the keys every time.

[Puppet Users] Custom fact to get current system locale on Windows

I'm currently facing a problem where a package on Windows is installed
with a translated displayname ("AdoptOpenJDK JRE mit Hotspot 11.0.7.10
(x64)"). Of course this is different from the expected (english)
displayname ("AdoptOpenJDK JRE with Hotspot 11.0.7.10 (x64)") which
breaks idempotency. However, the particular systems I need to install
this package on need to run with the German locale, so I need a way to
get the current locale at runtime.

So before I start writing my own: Does anybody have a custom fact at
hand for Windows which does this?

needed to provide a password as part of the command. One would have to
define $password as String instead of Sensitive and then wrap the whole

Yes, did that, too. And that works. However, the data is then shown in
clear again (in the diff, or in the command of an exec) , so I gained
exactly nothing.

Hi,

tried to use the "Sensitive" data type for the first time (with Puppet
6.18.0), but it doesn't work as expected (found and followed several
tutorials on the net, see links below), also using the "lookup_options"
method to ensure the Hiera-provided value is indeed converted to
sensitive.

Here's my sample code (Hiera files omitted):

class test (Sensitive $foo) {
  file {'/tmp/foo':
content => "${foo}\n",
  }
}

When I run this, I get:

Didn't see this earlier, sorry.
The "no parameter named 'xxx'" error can usually be resolved by
recreating the metadata for your Puppet environment(s). This can be
done on the Puppet master using the following command (for the
production environment):
/opt/puppetlabs/bin/puppet generate types --environment production --
force
I've added this command to my environment update script after running
into this problem myself a few months ago after updating some external
modules from the forge.

Hmm, that used to be "puppet-release-...". When has this been changed
to "puppet-tools-release-..."?

BTW: Although this package doesn't have any dependencies, other
packages might have some, so it's better to use

apt-get install ./package.deb

to get them properly resolved.
