RE: [Puppet Users] Puppet and mobile OS

2013-03-13 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,

Thanks for your answer and I hope that I do not hijacked a thread.

My company sells a product, and a part of this product may be used on mobile
and classical computers.

We look to use for deployment tool on classical computers, and as usual, it is
more simple to use one tool only for deployment.

So I have to cover a requirement for deployment on mobile, this is the cause
of my question, after that the mobile number is between one or two until one or
two thousands.

For IPhone, I understand your answer, but for Android and W8 ? One is based on
Linux, the other one on windows; your answer means that Ruby does not run on
these two OS or at least, that not known tests have been done on these OS.

Sincerly,

I very much doubt it. You'd have to have ports of Ruby and Facter, available,
and probably a bunch of other stuff too. How many phones do you have that you
need to config manage them? And what items of their configuration is it that
you want to manage? That's not as rhetorical as it probably sounds; I'm
genuinely intrigued as to what it is you're trying to achieve here.

Thanks,

Matt.

RE: [Puppet Users] dependencies between nodes

2013-02-26 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,

Thanks for the answer, I understand that with exported resources, I can create
interactions between nodes.

But If I understood your suggestion, on node b I will get the file defined on
node a : great.

But does this implicitly mean that all resources on node b will wait that the
file is created ? Or how do I define a require link between the classes define
on node b ?

May I write something like that :
node a {
 # Do this when the DB is installed
 @@file { /tmp/dbdone.txt: content = Woo, DB installed!\n, tag
= dbdone, }
}

node b {
 File | tag == dbdone |

Pakackage{'jboss':
require = [ File| tag == dbdone |],
}
}

I haven't messed with inter-dependent nodes yet, but exported resources might
fit the bill.  Something like:

,
| node a {
| # Do this when the DB is installed
| @@file { /tmp/dbdone.txt: content = Woo, DB installed!\n, tag

|
| node b {

`

Then if /tmp/dbdone.txt is on nodeb it's safe to install? Again, haven't tried
this but potentially worth looking at. No matter what I'm curious what the
solution is.

RE: [Puppet Users] dependencies between nodes

2013-02-26 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,

Anothoer point about dependencies between nodes, is it possible to say that an
exported resources requires another one ?

If I used the example given by kyle :
node a {
 # Do this when the DB is installed
 @@file { /tmp/dbdone.txt: content = Woo, DB installed!\n, tag =
dbdone, } }

node b {
 File | tag == dbdone |

Pakackage{'jboss':
require = [ File| tag == dbdone |], } }

I want to export the resource file only if db installation success otherwise
not.

Hi,

To use exported ressources, I choice to install mysql and I modify puppet.conf,
adding :
storeconfigs = true
dbadapter = mysql
dbuser = puppet
   dbpassword = a password
dbserver = localhost
dbsocket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

Then I run : /etc/init.d/puppetmaster restart

And on client I have the following error :
Warning: Error 400 on SERVER: Could not retrieve facts for agent fqdn:

This link

Is it true ? Do I need to install MCollective to define dependencies between

[Puppet Users] file and http source

2013-02-11 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,

We would like to use a file resource with a source with an HTTP URL.

Feature #5783 describes this need, and if I understood the comments, it is
under development.

Is it possible to know if this feature is available in a patch or something
like that ?

Of course, there is the bypass described on the net : using a wget but wget
does not exist natively on windows ...

[Puppet Users] service ressource on CentOS 6.3

Hi,

I have a jboss service running on a Cent0S 6.3 64 bits

I use :

To stop the service, but puppet give the following traces :
Error: /Stage[main]/Jbossuninstall/Service[jboss]/ensure: change from running
to stopped failed: Could not stop Service[jboss]: Execution of '/sbin/service

In fact command /sbin/service jboss stop returns 143, is it the error reason ?

And how can I stop a jboss service on CentOS 6.3 ?

Yes. Linux Standards Base specifications call for initscript actions other
than 'status' to return 0 on success, and Puppet relies on your services to
comply. Supposing that Jboss is in fact stopped successfully in your scenario,
the initscript is defective on account of returning the wrong code. This is
not a CentOS problem, because CentOS did not provide whatever Jboss package you
are using.

Supposing that you don't want to fix the Jboss init script, you can work around
its buggy behavior by declaring a custom 'stop' command for the Service
resource. You'll have to determine the details to match your requirements and
the behavior of the initscript. If you don't care whether jboss really does
stop then it might be '/bin/bash -c /sbin/service jboss stop || /bin/true'.

Hi,

Using a command line, Is it possible to get a report for a node, report stored
on server, or to get the last_run_report stored on agent ?

I try using the REST API but I did not succeed.

After a build, our application is installed on a testbed using pupet and when
the application is installed, some tests and others processing are running.

I thought to use the REST API to know when the node is in resquested status and
when the application is installed but maybe there is another way. Is there ?

I looked to puppetdb and dashboard API, but I did not understand that they
could fill my needs.

I know that I can define a report processor specially for that, but if I do
that I do not know if I wll be abble to display report in a console like
foreman or to define another report processor.

Perhaps 'puppet node' is what you're looking for?

$ sudo puppet node status $(facter fqdn)
[sudo] password for kburdis:
lnxmgt-01.domain
Currently active
Last catalog: 2013-01-31T14:57:22.518Z
Last facts: 2013-01-31T14:57:14.732Z

To get more info you'll can install PuppetDB and that's as simple as:

# puppet module install puppetlabs/puppetdb

Then update auth.conf to make the inventory service accessible:

# vim /etc/puppet/auth.conf
...
# Permit all access to the facts endpoint:
# (Note that this will allow access to both facts and facts_search, since the
# path is read as a prefix.)
path /facts
auth any
method find, search
allow *
...

Then you can query data about your nodes - for example:

$ PUPPETMASTER_HOST=$(facter fqdn)
$ PUPPETMASTER_PORT=443
$ MYNODE=$(facter fqdn)
$ curl -k -H Accept: yaml
https://${PUPPETMASTER_HOST}:${PUPPETMASTER_PORT}/production/facts/${MYNODE}https://$%7bPUPPETMASTER_HOST%7d:$%7bPUPPETMASTER_PORT%7d/production/facts/$%7bMYNODE%7d

Hi Bernard!
The creates attribute is a conditional for the exec run.
From http://docs.puppetlabs.com/references/latest/type.html#exec :
creates
A file to look for before running the command. The command will only run if the
file doesn't exist.

So it's actually looking for that file, and running the command you specified
only if it can't find it. It's assumed that your command will create that file
and the exec won't run more than once.

Hope it's clearer now, regards!
Pablo

Ticket #10261 was that facter always reported the architecture as x86, even
when running a 64-bit OS on x64 hardware. However, there is a still unresolved
ticket #16948 when running a 32-bit OS on x64 hardware.

Hi,

First, thanks for your answer.

I am not still aware of a deep understanding of differences between resources

Let me put it this way: A resource manages something on the client. A
collection of resources is compiled on the server and applied to the client. A
function is run on the server and works on a manifest before it is compiled,
sort of like preprocessing.
A point, with my tests, notify messages are displayed in the reverse order they
are written in manifest ...
Ordering isn't guaranteed to be anything. The nature of puppet manifests is not
linear, it is declarative. That is, unless you explicitly specify dependencies
with before/require parameters, or the - operator, resources will get applied
in any order they please.

I understood that alert, crit, debug, emerg, err, info, notice are functions
executed on server during parsing step; the documentation explains that, by
default, messages are sent to syslog even if I did not find them.

Thanks for your details on fail function, I did not understand clearly which
effects this function has.

I found ErrorLog in learning puppet documentation, (Generated on October 24,
2012, from git revision 38e9e6c36310cb4895f51e180890cd3fa28e) page 53/67 :
this is a sample of an erb file.
That may be referring to an apache directive.

Does it make sense in that context?

Notify is not a function. It is a resource type. It essentially logs on the
client by putting a message in the client's catalog.

alert, crit, debug, emerg, err, info, notice and warning are functions. They
will record a message to the server's log at the specified level. Parsing and
execution will continue. I did not list the levels in any particular order.

fail is also a function. It is a way to programatically cause a parse failure.
The error will be logged and execution on the current node will stop.

Something like this would typically go in your manifest files, not the
puppet.conf file. I think you will find the Puppet language guide instructive,
specifically the page on variables:
http://docs.puppetlabs.com/puppet/2.7/reference/lang_variables.html

You should think of Puppet as more of a development language than a tool that
you simply configure using a .conf file. The site.pp is simply the entry point
into the structure you build with the manifests, and you can do quite a lot
with the language.

2013-01-18 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,
Is there a tutorial on exceptions and error management in puppet script ?

I read the manual and found information which is confusing for me.

There is the notify function which seems to be executed on agent.

There are functions like notice, alert, fail and so on which are executed on
server.

And I read the ErrorLog word.

So how to put all things together, what is the right policy ?

Work on Dashboard by PuppetLabs is ending, as a replacement is created in terms
of a standalone ENC and also enhancements to PuppetDB.

However, it is not fully going away, as someone from the community has stepped
forward to take over the project. This person has already been given commit

[Puppet Users] node definition and variables

2013-01-16 Thread GRANIER Bernard (MORPHO)
Hi,

Is there a way to do something like :

$computers_dbm='computer1','computer2'

$computers_worklflow='computer4','computer3'

node $computers_dbm {
  include dbm_installation
}

node $computers_worklflow {
  include dbm_worklflow
}

The point is not the include, but the fact to use a variable to define a nodes
list.
I tried several solution but I did not find a good one.

Thanks in advance for any helps.

Hi,

I'm trying to generate passwords for user accounts using the generate function
and calling a local script on the server, but that fails with an error about
Broken pipe :

Code I'm using is:

$encrypted_password =
generate(/opt/ict/bash/encrypt_password.sh, $password)

Any idea how the generate function works internally in Puppet? Can I use pipes
in the scripts?

 Is it possible to download gepetto plugin as a zip ? I mean not a full

It is not available to the public, please contact me directly and I will
help you out. (Email or on #geppetto on IRC)

Supposedly it should also be possible to install into an Eclipse IDE
from the pacakged Geppetto by refering to its location in Eclipse - but
have not tried this.

Longer term we will make the repository itself available. We intended to
put it up on github download, but now that service has been deprecated
and we are looking for a new download home.

Hi and welcome!

The puppet master itself is a simple rack application so webrick is the default
rack server. You can use any application server that is Rack-compatible; Apache
w/ Passenger is also a very common configuration.

There is not a web interface by default, but there are a number of tools that
provide a web UI for managing your Puppet infrastructure, like Foreman [1] and
Puppet Enterprise [2].

Hope that helps!

Hy,

I am just starting with Puppet, and install a test bed with community

I wonder if WebRick is used only of master-agents communication or
does WebRick provides a web application usable by human with a web
browser ?

Thank's for any helps
