Use the Python "in" operator
selection-name in cmd.get_names("selections")
PyMOL>print "foo" in cmd.get_names("selections")
False
PyMOL>select foo, all
Selector: selection "foo" defined with 1631 atoms.
PyMOL>print "foo" in cmd.get_names("selections")
True
