[issue8179] Test failure in test_macpath.py test_realpath (Mac OS X)

2010-03-20 Thread Ned Deily

Ned Deily n...@acm.org added the comment:

This failure seems to be caused by major changes to test_macpath. I'm not sure
how much of this is really applicable to macpath which implements the obsolete
MacOS 9 path functions. Perhaps leave well enough alone?

[issue8154] os.execlp('true') crashes the interpreter on 2.x

2010-03-20 Thread R. David Murray

R. David Murray rdmur...@bitdance.com added the comment:

I believe that backporting this change to 2.6 is inappropriate. It will more
than likely cause perfectly correct code to stop working, and that is not
something we like to do in a maintenance release.

I believe that the bug on the debian/ubuntu side is actually that /bin/true
crashes if argc is 0. Someone with a debian or ubuntu system should test this.

In fact, reviewing this issue again after Alexander's post to python-dev, I
don't think that this fix in its current form is advisable at all. It makes
Python's execv function less flexible than the underlying system API, and more
importantly changes its behavior in a backwards incompatible way. Python 3 is
a different story in this regard, since the change went in before 3.1, and as
noted it makes Python strictly compliant with the posix standard, which seems
like an acceptable reason to decrease flexibility.

Since it does trigger a crash on the windows equivalent API, the check should
be conditional on platform. And it should generate a py3k warning on other
platforms.

I'm open to an argument that the API can be changed in 2.7, although I don't
think we normally do that without a deprecation first. But I think there is no
question that this change in its current form needs to be backed out of 2.6.

[issue7347] Add {Create|Delete}KeyEx to _winreg, doc and test updates

2010-03-20 Thread Brian Curtin

Brian Curtin cur...@acm.org added the comment:

RegDeleteKeyEx will only work on a Windows version of 5.2 or greater (Vista/XP
x64), and XP is 5.1, so RegDeleteKeyEx can't be a simple drop-in under the
DeleteKey name.

CreateKeyEx is different though since it goes as far back as Win2k, and it
could be put into CreateKey like you suggest. However, given the way the rest
of the module is laid out with *Key and *KeyEx already, it seemed more
consistent the way I had written it. I could change this if more people agree
with your plan.

Should unittest be fixed to be able to handle this? (Output '\u...' style

[issue8184] multiprocessing.managers will not fail if listening ocket already in use

2010-03-20 Thread news1234

New submission from news1234 news1...@free.fr:

Following code snippet will behave differently on Linux and windows hosts.

Under linux the script can only be run once.
The second call will raise an exception, as the previous program is
already listening to pot 8089.

Under Windows however the program can be started twice.
and will print twice serving. This surprises me

The script:
# ##
import socket,sys
from multiprocessing.managers import BaseManager

mngr = BaseManager(address=('127.0.0.1',8089),authkey='verysecret')
try:
srvr = mngr.get_server()
except socket.error as e:
print probably address already in use
sys.exit()
print serving
srvr.serve_forever()

Perhaps the reason for the problem might be related to
http://bugs.python.org/issue2550

I'd suggest to fix multiprocessing.managers.BaseManager such, that it behaves
identially on both platforms.

[issue8185] re.findall()

2010-03-20 Thread Jean-Michel Fauth

New submission from Jean-Michel Fauth wxjmfa...@gmail.com:

 sys.version
2.6.5 (r265:79096, Mar 19 2010, 21:48:26) [MSC v.1500 32 bit
(Intel)]
 import re
 re.match([-+]?[0-9]+[.]?[0-9]*([eE][-+]?[0-9]+)?, 1.23e-4).group()
1.23e-4
 re.search([-+]?[0-9]+[.]?[0-9]*([eE][-+]?[0-9]+)?, 1.23e-4).group()
1.23e-4
 for e in re.finditer([-+]?[0-9]+[.]?[0-9]*([eE][-+]?[0-9]+)?, 1.23e-4):
print e.group()

1.23e-4

but

 re.findall([-+]?[0-9]+[.]?[0-9]*([eE][-+]?[0-9]+)?, 1.23e-4)
['e-4']

It seems re.findall() does not like patterns containing parentheses.

 re.findall([-+]?[0-9]+[.]?[0-9]*[eE][-+]?[0-9]+, 1.23e-4)
['1.23e-4']

 re.findall(a(b)?, ab)
['b']
 re.findall(ab?, ab)
['ab']

[issue8185] re.findall()

2010-03-20 Thread Jon Clements

Jon Clements jon...@googlemail.com added the comment:

Seems consistent to me:

.match, .search and .finditer return a MatchObject whose .group() return the
*entire matched string*. If you use .group(1) you'll get similar results to
.findall() which returns a list of (possibly of tuples) of the captured
groupings.

This is the findall equivalent (using a non-capturing group):

 re.findall('a(?:b)?', 'ab')
['ab']

[issue8185] re.findall()

2010-03-20 Thread Ezio Melotti

Ezio Melotti ezio.melo...@gmail.com added the comment:

What Jon said is correct, .group() is equivalent to .group(0) and returns the
whole match. re.findall returns all the groups captured by each set of () as a
list of strings (if there is 0 or 1 group) or a list of tuples (if there are
more than 1).

No, I mean 61. 2**61 - 1 is prime; 2**63-1 is not. (So 2 bits of the hash
get wasted, but that's not a big deal, especially since they're the high-end
bits and Python mostly cares about the lower-order bits.)

[issue7316] Add a timeout functionality to common locking operations

2010-03-20 Thread Antoine Pitrou

Antoine Pitrou pit...@free.fr added the comment:

Here is a new patch fixing most of your comments.

A couple of answers:

 I believe we can support arbitrary values here, subject to floating
 point rounding errors, by calling lock-with-timeout in a loop. I'm not
 sure whether that's a good idea, but it fits better with python's
 arbitrary-precision ints.

I'm a bit wary of this, because we can't test it properly.

 -task_handler.join(1e100)
 +task_handler.join()

 Why is this change here? (Mostly curiosity)

Because 1e100 would raise OverflowError :)

 +   if (timeout  PY_TIMEOUT_MAX) {

 I believe it's possible for this comparison to return false, but for
 the conversion to PY_TIMEOUT_T to still overflow:

Ok, I've replaced it with the following which should be ok:

if (timeout = (double) PY_TIMEOUT_MAX) [...]

 +   milliseconds = (microseconds + 999) / 1000;

 Can (microseconds+999) overflow?

Indeed it can (I sincerely hoped that nobody would care...).
I've replaced it with what might be a more appropriate construct.
Please note that behaviour is undefined when microseconds exceeds the max
timeout, though (this is the low-level C API).
