[Qgis-developer] GRASS missing from Processing?

2015-09-18 Thread Paolo Cavallini
Hi all.
Processing on QGIS 2.10 is not finding my installed grass7, on Debian
sid. I kind of recall there was a problem, with a simple fix by Victor:
do we need to release an updated Processing package?
Or is this a local issue? Checked on Windows, and it works.
Thanks.

Re: [Qgis-developer] GRASS missing from Processing?

2015-09-18 Thread Filipe Dias
Hi

This is indeed annoying. I'm using GRASS 7 directly as a result.

As Paolo mentioned recently, Processing doesn't seem to be extremely
popular amongst QGIS users and it is understaffed at the moment.

Hi Paolo (and others),

as you can see here:

http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/processing/

Current packager is Alexander (in cc). First thing is to ask him to
package a new version.

If he is too busy, just let the dev list know, because I think every
experience plugin-dev can get this packaged (maybe with a little help of
Victor or Alexander...)

Strange. Processing is my work horse from the moment on it was published,
and I will never want to miss it again. I wonder how and what other users
do, when not using processing? This is an outstanding innovation, but
obviously too much hidden (simplified interface, duplications with vector

Agreed. The main point here is very few people invest in it, so
stabilization and innovation is slower than we would like.

oh, I see, thanks. I'm asking because it happens with several plugins,
and I believe we should make something to make QGIS more robust, and
intercept these errors before crashing.
If your plugin crashes QGIS systematically, it could be a good test case.

Re: [Qgis-developer] What's your view on QGIS plugins that connect to non-GPL software?

2015-09-18 Thread Crispin Cooper
Thinking on all that’s said here…

The idea that the proprietary link must be optional to ensure compliance with
GPL seems to me a difficult one to apply at the granularity of plugins, because
if the aim is to provide multiple different ways of doing something, the
natural way to implement this is via multiple different plugins. The overall
effect then is that the proprietary link is optional in QGIS overall but not
within that plugin.

Anyway I noticed there is an existing case study here in the Oracle Spatial
Georaster plugin
https://docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/user_manual/plugins/plugins_oracle_raster.html

Is this sort of thing generally considered ok, and on what grounds?

committee?

Hi,
I do not think we have an official position: we stick to the GPL
licence. I admit that the interpretation may be sometimes tricky, but in
these case it's only a lawyer (or better a judge) that can give a
definite answer.
In general I thin Vincent has outlined the prevailing interpretation.

Yes the linking and licensing restrictions of GPL comes up many time but can be
solved in edge cases - you might want to look at the (now defunct) SQLAnywhere
plugin that was contributed (you will need to look back in Git history to find
it)…they managed to find a way to deal with creating a GPL stubb that creates a
socket connection to their proprietary db backend if I recall correctly. Marco
Hugentobler has often said in response to these kind of questions (and I agree)
that the GPL creates a platform that encourages sharing in two directions and
when you weigh up the license against others in those simple terms it still
seems like a good choice even if in some edge cases it actually means we lose
potentially interesting contributions.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Crash on exit

2015-09-18 Thread Matthias Kuhn
Hi all,

These crashes can have different reasons (e.g. for the plugin at
Andreas' place it's becuase of a custom expression function which seems
to get double deleted). Some of these can probably be prevented by
changes in QGIS core, some will require changes in the plugin.

The best method I can think of is to reproduce the problems on a
computer where QGIS is running in debug mode (or at least capable of
producing a stacktrace) and decide case-by-case.
For the minidump - which would theoretically also include a stacktrace -
I am not sure if anybody is actually capable of analyzing it.

I'm sorry to tell you that I doubt that there's an easy way to deal with
it. Or a generic approach to "catch" this and prevent QGIS from crashing.

Just my 2c, if anybody has an idea to fix it once and for all, please
speak up :-)

Hello Andreas,

to convince QGIS server to log is black magic... if you are working from
the command line, you should set the env vars by exporting them or directly
in the command, this works for me from the cmd line:

QGIS_SERVER_LOG_LEVEL=0 QGIS_SERVER_LOG_FILE=/tmp/qgis-000.log
./qgis_mapserv.fcgi

The ECW/JP2 are probably unrelated to your crash.

If I inderstand it correctly, a commit and a new package is much needed.

I confirm once more that the simple fix in:
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/commit/2a14ffd281d0a0e99a0a899622a29ca0efdb0852
works. Could please someone release a new Processing package?
It's pretty important, as GRASS is broken without it.
Thanks.

I was already wondering why nothing happened for such a long time.
https://hub.qgis.org/issues/13072 is closed.
My GRASS (on QGIS 2.8.3) was only working cause I fiddled around for hours
and then downloaded processing 2.9.3 manually and refused to update it to
2.10.1. Since then, no new processing plugin was shipped.
I wonder how many people have no GRASS support for months now, don't they
dare or are there only so few Linux users who try to use LTR but always
compile latest versions?

Cheers
Bernd

yes, little bit more than zipping code from master and uploading it.
I think Victor can do it, or I can as well, with a little help.
Thanks.
