[Qgis-developer] Attribute table in Master - 2 issues

2014-10-30 Thread Stott, James
1) Updating of values using Field calculator

Using master, I select some rows in an attribute table (the data is in
PostGIS). I use field calculator to update the values of an existing column in
my selected rows. These new values will not display until I close the attribute
table and open it again.

2) Row selection (blue highlight)

If I click and drag down or up while the mouse button is still held down, I can
select multiple rows. These rows are highlighted in blue. If I do this a 2nd
time, when I first click the mouse button, the old selection is still shown in
the blue highlight. The old selection highlight only disappears when I am
finished with my new selection and release the mouse button. This for me isn't
the correct behavior that I would expect.

However, if you select a set of rows, and then make another program the focused
window, if then click back into the attribute table and drag a selection (the
action of click and drag has to be the thing that gives the attribute table
focus back), it displays the correct behavior I would expect (i.e. the previous
selection highlight is removed straight after I have clicked with the mouse
button).

If I return focus to the attribute table window first and then click and drag,
it still displays the wrong behavior.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? I am using Windows 7. Apologies if
these have already been reported.

Regards,

James

Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-tr] size of translations, use a distinct repo?

2014-10-29 Thread Stott, James
As a slight side point, according to transifex it looks like we could have 13
fully translated languages for the GUI by the time 2.6 is released (13
languages are on 99% or more). 15 languages are over 95%. This is excellent
news.

Is it something we should publise, maybe add to the visual changelog?

hmm - ok ..
Then I am going to give it a try without location and see if there are any
problems with transifex or linguist ..
If not - I also think that way is perfect ..

 Good idea,
if its really translation that causes the growth we should do
 everything to avoid that.

As Jurgen noticed, there are some useless changes in the ts files:

  message
 -location filename=../src/core/qgscontexthelp_texts.cpp
 line=327/
 +location filename=../src/core/qgscontexthelp_texts.cpp
 line=319/

if there are lines removed/added in the source file, this will cause
 changes in the translation file.
Jurgen suggested to remove these tags location filename which would
 improve a lot.

Is there any way to shrink the already existing repo?
At one point I thought about zipping the ts files - but if there is a
 better way .. good!
I always wondered why the whole translations file has to be changed
whenever there are only some small changes ..
moving the translation in it's own github repository: hmm - I don't
know if thats easily possible.. but I am also willing to try it if it
helps the source code to stay clean.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible.
git submodules would be pretty useful for this matter.

But again - anyway to shrink the already existing source code?

As far as I know, you can't shrink existing repo without destroying
 the history.

I don't mind about loosing track of translation changes.

I guess this is just due to the location filename stuff. That
often causes massive change in the ts files, because lines were
added or removed from the source files - even if there isn't even a
 changed translation.

I think that is not used at all for transifex and it's not that
important to have in linguist either.

So instead of inventing something new, all it takes might be to add
-locations none to our lupdate call, reduce the size of the .ts
files a lot (in one huge commit) and avoid useless tracking of
 location changes in the future.

 Objections?

Re: [Qgis-developer] weekly build problem

2014-10-14 Thread Stott, James
Are there any plugins that could be causing this problem? Seeing as the problem
exists over 2 different versions of QGIS I would recommend checking.

I have had similar (think it was with version 2 and 2.2) and the problem was
solved by turning off all plugins. I was then able to add the plugins in again
one by one to find the plugin causing the problem.

I have since tried to uninstall the weekly build and install a stable version

Is there something else that needs to be uninstalled such as visual C++, etc?

I think Tim was editing the Plugin Builder a little while ago.

We discussed adding an option in the plugin builder dialog to specify which
menu and toolbar the plugin would be added to.

This would obviously help quite a lot with new plugins. Obviously still
important to have this documented in the cookbook.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Please tell me how I can speed-up QGIS development on Android

2014-07-21 Thread Stott, James
Just a quick question to make sure I have understood this correctly.

The github repository you linked to Matthias, that is a version of QGIS using
qt5?

I have problems with display resolution (3200 x 1800) on my new work laptop
(it's not just QGIS, there are other problems that look at rubbish also). The
QGIS interface doesn't look so great. I have read that qt5 handles these things
much better.

Is there anywhere I can get a windows installer for this from? If not I will
attempt to build QGIS myself (haven't done it before).

If it is going to be qt5 for desktop QGIS then I am very keen to test - it's
the main downside of my new machine.

Re: [Qgis-developer] SOSI support in QGIS

2014-07-09 Thread Stott, James
Hi Tommy,

Unfortunately this list is not really the correct place to ask this question.
It is possible that there are some people here who have experience with using
dot spatial, but I think you are more likely to get a better response on the
forums on the dot spatial website. I am certainly not familiar with dot spatial
myself.

I don't know how dot spatial integrates GDAL into their system, or what version
they are using, but OSGeo4W uses GDAL 1.11.0. From what I understand, OSGeo4W
tends to set environment variables when it starts programs (with the use of
.bat files). So it is unlikely that the GDAL installed with OSGeo4W is
interfering with the GDAL that is built into dot spatial. However that is just
my understanding of it and one of the more expert people here will maybe want
to correct me :)

Sorry I can't be of more help, but try the guys over at the dot spatial site.
They will be able to provide further guidance I would imagine.

Hi everyone and thanks for the post lately.

I don`t konow if I am completly off road here, but I have and issue that I
suspect COULD be related to GDAL.

I am working with a .Net forms application i Visual Studio 2013 which uses Dot
Spatial.

From what I can read it is based somehowe on GDAL.

Now, tonight, out of the blue really, I get an out of memory message when I
try to open a GeoTiff in the Dot Spatial map control.
I say out of the blue because it came just like that.

I must have done something or something must have happened, but I can`t figure
out what.

Has this something to do with the GDAL/OGR me and James have been working on
lately and I have installed on this machine? Has there been an automatic update
somewhere?

I just wanted to ask

Tommy

Re: [Qgis-developer] SOSI support in QGIS

2014-07-08 Thread Stott, James
Hi Andre,

I have now tested on 3 different machines with 3 different datasets.

Machines tested:

1) Work desktop running Windows 7
2) Work laptop running Windows 8
3) Home laptop running Windows 8

Datasets tested:

1) Naturvernområde (NATVERNOMR.SOS)
2) Naturtyper (NATURTYPER.SOS)
3) Felles kystkontur generalisert (Kystkontur_generalisert.SOS)

All 3 of these datasets are available here and are as they were when I
downloaded them - I have not edited the data at all.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6r5nAOdEBZramdzNi15YzNqZUUusp=sharing

ogr2ogr:

The following ogr2ogr commands complete fine on all 3 machines and the
shapefiles open without any problems.

ogr2ogr -f ESRI Shapefile kystkontur Kystkontur_generalisert.SOS
ogr2ogr -f ESRI Shapefile naturtyper NATURTYPER.SOS
ogr2ogr -f ESRI Shapefile natvernomr NATVERNOMR.SOS

It appears that all data is converted when I check the number of records in the
SOSI file against the number of converted records in the shapefiles. The only
warnings I get are about normalized/laundered field names, but I assume that's
due to me converting to a shapefile.

QGIS:

In QGIS, I can only hear the popping noise on Windows 7. QGIS crashes on
Windows 7 as well. The two Windows 8 machines experience no problems with the 3
sosi files that are available from the link above. The data loads and displays
correctly, and QGIS never shutdowns unexpectedly. I get fewer problems when I
load only one of the geometry types from one SOSI file.

So I don't know if this is a specific Windows 7 thing or not.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Qgis-developer] SOSI support in QGIS

2014-07-07 Thread Stott, James
Hi Jürgen,

So with further testing it appears we have found some problems with other SOSI
files.

It seems things work quite well with simple files (like the naturvernområde
data for Rogaland I and others have tested with), but we get problems when
opening bigger files.

One thing we have noticed is that a lot of the problems seem to happen when you
try and load more than one type of geometry types from a sosi file at once. If
I select all 3 geometry types in one go (or load 2 or more individually) QGIS
crashes. If we just load one geometry type, and then close it and load another
geometry type, it works fine.

We are also getting problems with files that contain a lot of data, in this
situation QGIS will crash with just one layer loaded.

And when QGIS starts to error, I get the noise problem mentioned here too
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/10746 .

So a few issues, but it's a great start that it works with some data :)

If people would like copies of these datasets for testing, I can provide them.

Re: [Qgis-developer] SOSI support in QGIS

2014-07-06 Thread Stott, James
Hi,

Just to double check a couple of things, 1) you need to install the gdal-sosi
package using the OSGeo4W installer. 2) You will need to update all packages
using the OSGeo4W installer as the changes Jürgen has made seem to have been
made today.

If you go into QGIS and select Add Vector Layer from the Layer menu (these
instructions assume an English GUI, obviously if you are using the Norwegian
translated GUI it will be in Norwegian).
Here you need to make sure Source type is set to File.
Click browse.
In the bottom right hand corner of the open file dialog, you will see a drop
down menu.
Here you should find an option for SOSI.
Select a SOSI file and select and click open.
Click Open
A dialog will appear allowing you to select which layers from the SOSI file to
open. Choose the ones you want and select OK.
QGIS will load the data.

Hope this helps.

problem on my home machine (Windows 8 - but never noticed if it was there
before so cant comment on that).

Re: [Qgis-developer] SOSI support in QGIS

2014-06-27 Thread Stott, James
OK I have checked this quickly this morning on my machine at home as I am not
around for the next week. Only difference at home is Windows 8. Updated both 32
bit (to 39eaff9) and 64 bit (to 2d1e983) OSGeo4W this morning.

I still do not get the option for SOSI files in 32 bit QGIS in the files of
type drop down menu in the open file dialog window. The SOSI option is avaiable
in 64 bit.

The 64 bit version still gives the invalid data source error after trying to
open the SOSI file.

The SOSI file I have tested with is the naturvernområde dataset from
Miljødirektoratet (I have downloaded only data for Rogaland fylke - data
available from here http://karteksport.miljodirektoratet.no/#page=tab1).

ogrinfo reports correctly on both 32 and 64 bit versions and ogr2ogr will
convert sosi files to shapefiles in my test.

Commands used were:

ogrinfo NATVERNOMR.SOS
ogr2ogr -f ESRI Shapefile output NATVERNOMR.SOS

Both sets of output shapefiles open fine in QGIS.

Hi again,

Now I rebuilt the 32-bit package based on GDAL 1.11.0 which is the GDAL version
QGIS is build against (the old package on OSGeo4W was built against GDAL 1.10)
and tested in QGIS 2.3 (QGIS code revision 39eaff9).
The problem is now the same, James described for the 64bit version. However,
ogrinfo gives no error messages and displays the content of the SOSI file and
all layers just fine. So maybe it is not only a packaging issue?

James, what does your 64bit ogrinfo say when run with your SOSI file? And does
ogr2ogr work for you in 64bit?

Hi all,

Just wondered if anything more has happened with this?

As it stands, I get an option for SOSI files in the file open dialog of 64 bit
master, but not 32 bit. (SOSI is the data standard in Norway for those that
don’t know).

In 64 bit, when I select a file for opening, it comes up with another dialog
(similar to when you open up a gpx file) where you choose the geometry you want
to load from the file. After I have selected what I want and push ok, I just
get an error message saying that the data is not a valid data source.

This happens on both mine and a colleagues machine. Does this affect others too?

I have also installed the gdal-sosi package in osgeo4w. I am using Windows 7 64
Bit, osgeo4w for install. Current QGIS version is d4b07a.

If SOSI files do not open in QGIS, we should remove the option from the open

experience with QGIS and SOSI.

So it Works for Mac and Linux users? Does this work with the installer download
of QGIS for Windows? I havent actually tried that.

Is it possible to drop it for just Windows users? I just think we will end up
with a lot of users (especially as Windows will possbily be the most used
platform) who will get frustrated that they cant open these files despite it
looking like they should be able to. Better to wait until 2.6 in my opinion.

This is a shame as we now have a nearly complete Norwegian translation in place
for 2.4, so SOSI support and a translation are two very good arguements for
adopting QGIS here.

I still do not get the option for SOSI files in 32 bit QGIS in the files of

avaiable in 64 bit.
That is because the gdal-sosi plugin in 32bit OSGeo4W was built against GDAL
1.10 (and not the 1.11 version QGIS 2.3 / 2.4 is (will be) using. I shall
update the package based on GDAL 1.11 asap.

The 64 bit version still gives the invalid data source error after trying to

I can confirm the behavior you describe on Windows (both 32 and 64bit). Given
that GDAL (using the gdal-sosi plugin from OSGeo4W) handles SOSI files without
problems, the issue must be somewhere in the QGIS-GDAL interface. No idea what
the reason might be...

Meanwhile I also tested on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (where I compiled GDAL 1.11 with
SOSI support and then the latest QGIS master). On Ubuntu I can open SOSI files
in QGIS without any problems... So this is a Windows specific issue, which
makes me think that dropping the option to open SOSI from QGIS completely would
be a bit too radical...

Hi Larry,

I tried now with QGIS 2.3 nightly build (2.3.0-81) in OSGeo4W.
When I try to open a SOSI file in QGIS I still get the “Invalid Source” error
message.
The gdal-sosi-plugin package in OSGeo4W is built against GDAL 1.10. Can that be
a problem? Will I have to rebuild the plugin against GDAL 1.11 in order to make
it accessible for QGIS (ogrinfo --format lists SOSI).
Or is the solution to install OSGeo4W from scratch?

Any other ideas?

Re: [Qgis-developer] working with qgis and pgadmin/psql...

2014-04-10 Thread Stott, James
This was the problem I was having a few months ago before 2.2 was released. I
would run queries and they would never disappear on the server. So eventually
the queries would stop running as the number of connections reached 100.

I only got around it by adding layers and specifying that the layer does not
look for styles in the PostGIS database (the False at the end there).

vlayer = QgsVectorLayer(uri.uri(), layerName, postgres, False)

I don't know if it is related to the code that looks for styles in the
database, and if doesn't find one it doesn't shut down the connection?

Re: [Qgis-developer] Issue with standalone python script and PostGIS Layers

2014-02-21 Thread Stott, James
Just a follow up to this if other people ever have trouble with this.

I have managed to load my query layers by specifying False for the
loadDefaultStyleFlag parameter when I create the QgsVectorLayer. So

vlayer = QgsVectorLayer(uri.uri(), layerName, postgres, False)

This parameter stops QGIS from checking if there are styles in the database,
and thus means that it doesn't run loads of queries that it then doesn't close.

QGIS still needs to unload some of the connections that it creates when
searching for styles when loading query layers (if you don't specify the False
for the loadDefaultStyleFlag), so I believe the bug is still valid, but this is
a workaround so that is good. I also wonder if True is the right default for
the loadDefaultStyleFlag parameter?

It would be good to get details about this parameter added to
http://www.qgis.org/en/docs/pyqgis_developer_cookbook/loadlayer.html

Is this something I can add myself?

Following on from reporting the bug, I have done more digging into the problem.

It seems to be related to styleQML lines when I check what connections are
being sent to PostGIS. These don't disappear with each loop iteration in

What can I do to make this work?

Thanks for the response Tim.

I have not been destroying my layers. This has not been an issue when running
the plugin with 2.0.

This was the first thing I thought about in the version running against master
so I added the following code to close the postgis layers as it once I am
finished with them:

QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().removeMapLayer(layer_id)
This has not made it difference. It still hangs at the same place and I still
get the warning that there is already too many clients when trying to connect
to PostGIS with DB Manager or pgAdmin.

Shall I open a bug?

If you are creating postgis layers in a loop, are you making sure to destroy

[Qgis-developer] Master on OSGeo4W

2014-02-12 Thread Stott James
Just wanted to check if there were any problems with updates to master.

Haven't had an update for a couple of days now and its obviously important at
the moment so we can check for bugs.

From a personal point of view it is also very useful to be able to see my
translations within the software.

Hi Alvaro,
That seems really interesting, hopefully something similar thing can be created
for QGIS. Your video shows how slick it can be.

I've created a fairly bland issue for this - http://hub.qgis.org/issues/9451
What's next?

I have resolved the same problem in a personal application integrating all

Basically each provider offers a PropertyPage collection to build the
ConnectionString that each provider know to open.

I attach a short video to show the idea (~2.5 mb).

Hi Nathan,
Unfortunately my talent lies with finding flaws and suggesting
tweaks/improvements to things rather than designing UI's. I'm more than happy
to offer feedback.

Is there any way to spur this along? We have a limited amount of commercial
support (we're a local authority going through austerity measures- budgets
dwindling); this would be good to see in 2.4 if possible.

However, rather than rectify the issues, would it maybe make more sense to just

What are the plans relating to add-layer dialogs? Is there a preferred

Re: [Qgis-developer] Issue with standalone python script and PostGIS Layers

2014-01-24 Thread Stott James
Following on from reporting the bug, I have done more digging into the problem.

It seems to be related to styleQML lines when I check what connections are
being sent to PostGIS. These don't disappear with each loop iteration in
Master, but they do in version 2.0. Eventually when my script gets to 100
connections, it hangs.

What can I do to make this work?

I have updated the bug report with more details, which can be found here

I have not been destroying my layers. This has not been an issue when running

This was the first thing I thought about in the version running against master

QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().removeMapLayer(layer_id)
This has not made it difference. It still hangs at the same place and I still

This happened to me in 1.8, but was never able to pin down why. QGIS would
become responsive again after a while, and the slow down when you tried to save
the next edit.

It was with point layers that I had the problem with. Not sure if it affected
lines or polygons.

Had to close down QGIS and open again.

Re: [Qgis-developer] PyQGIS and checking WMS layers have data

2013-10-10 Thread Stott James
Thanks for the suggestion.

I have taken a slightly different approach, and I am checking the file size of
my PDFs using the following:

os.path.getsize(file)

There is an obvious difference between the file sizes of the PDFs where the wms
loaded, and those where it failed. If the pdf is too small, it tries to create
it again. Hopefully it won't get stuck in a loop where if it fails once it will
always fail!!

[Qgis-developer] PyQGIS and checking WMS layers have data

2013-10-09 Thread Stott James
Hi all,

I have a loop in my code that makes PDFs for a number of polygons and the base
mapping comes from an aerial photography WMS. So for each polygon, the python
code moves the map to the extent of that polygon and the makes a PDF.

However, some of my maps end up with white backgrounds where the aerial
photography hasn't loaded/displayed.

Is it possible to make sure that a WMS has loaded its data before a PDF is made
in python? Or does the problem lie with the network connection at the time that
PDF is made? Is there any way I can catch these instances and maybe load the
WMS again?

The last time I ran the script, of the 1465 PDFs it created, about 21 had a
white base map, so generally it works really really well. I have checked that
there is actually data for these 21 areas, and there is. It also seems to be
different areas that do not load each time I run the script.

Many thanks

Hi,
I have two browser panels available here , is that related to my install or
config?
They are named Browser and Browser (2).

Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Plugin presentation] LayerCombination

2013-07-17 Thread Stott James
Man I wish this had existed about a year and a half ago. Especially the fact
that it integrates into the composers too. I have always felt that was
something that was needed - an easy way to edit the locked layers in a composer
map - hence why I wrote a plugin for it.

Think I may well not bother update the locked layers editor plugin to 2.0
seeing as you have made this. This is much better.

Dear Mailing list,

I've been working on a python plugin called Layer Combinations, which I'd
love to release as stable for QGIS 2.0 (it's still flagged as experimental).

Since it's a workflow enhancement plugin, I thought it could be of some
interest to most of you. If so, I invite you to try the latest version (0.8,
requires QGIS nightly/master), and report any bugs or ideas on the tracker :
https://github.com/olivierdalang/layerCombinations

You'll find a small explanation of the plugin below, and a video trailer here :

Thanks for your attention !

## LayerCombinations##

It allows to store the visibility and the folding state of the layers in the
legend in so called combinations.

Those combination can then be restored, allowing to switch back and forth
complex setups.

The combinations can also be applied to composer maps. The link is dynamic,
which means that if the combination is updated, the composer map will
automatically reflect the modifications.

I find it very handy for big projects with many layers and several print
composers.

Hope you like it !

[Qgis-developer] Labels from loadNamedStyle()

2013-07-04 Thread Stott James
Hi,

Is anyone else still having problems with this bug
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/6468?

I am writing a standalone python program, and my code loads a style from a .qml
file, but the labels do not display when the maps are rendered to a .jpg.

The polygons have the correct styling (border etc), but not the labels. I am
using new style labeling.

The labels load correctly within QGIS GUI, but not in the python code.

I am using QGIS master from OSGeo4W, updated today.

Thanks

Re: [Qgis-developer] Dev plugin for master

2013-06-26 Thread Stott James
I had quite a few problems getting my plugin to be 2.0 compatible in the plugin
installer.

I found that I had ‘authorName’ in my metadata.txt file, not ‘author’. I
believe you also need ‘email’ filled in too.

I would check the metadata.txt file and make sure it’s the same as the example
online here:

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried 2. QGIS opens but then complains about sip. This doesn't fix the
command line problem.

So I am awaiting for 1. to happen :)

As suggested on the OSGeo4W mailing list
(http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/ANN-Python-2-7-4-td5048404.html), renaming
the python27.dll in windows\system32 (or syswow64) works, but it means ArcGIS
wont.

I think it means that for us there are two options,

1. In a little bit they'll rebuild 1.8 and put it on the installer.

2. Find the python upgrade that just changed and run it back a version. (When
you run the update, things that you have installed will say either the new
version that it's about to install or Keep if there's nothing to do. If you
click on the Keep it will cycle through a few things, one of which should be
the last installed version) No guarantees about what will happen though - I'd
try 1 first.

Re: [Qgis-developer] qgsAtlasComposition

2013-04-11 Thread Stott James
Thanks for the reply.

I am using QGIS master from OSGeo4W. At the moment I am just trying to get the
example in the test to work. But it always falls over at beginRender(). My
vector layer is a query from a PostGIS database.

Code is below (as you can see it is pretty much the same as the test code):

   query = (SELECT * From test.tablename WHERE substring(knrgnrbnr
from 1 for 4) = ' + KommuneNr + ')

vlayer = loadPostGISLayerQuery(localhost, 5432, database,
user, password,query,geom,gid,layername)

QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().addMapLayer(vlayer)
mMapRenderer = QgsMapRenderer()
layerStringList = QStringList()
layerStringList.append( vlayer.id() )
mMapRenderer.setLayerSet( layerStringList )
mMapRenderer.setProjectionsEnabled( True )
crs = QgsCoordinateReferenceSystem()
crs.createFromSrid( 32632 )
mMapRenderer.setDestinationCrs( crs )

mComposition = QgsComposition( mMapRenderer )
mComposition.setPaperSize( 297, 210 )

props = { color: 0,127,0 }
fillSymbol = QgsFillSymbolV2.createSimple( props )
renderer = QgsSingleSymbolRendererV2( fillSymbol )
vlayer.setRendererV2( renderer )

mAtlasMap = QgsComposerMap( mComposition, 20, 20, 130, 130 )
mAtlasMap.setFrameEnabled( True )
mComposition.addComposerMap( mAtlasMap )

mAtlas = QgsAtlasComposition( mComposition )
mAtlas.setCoverageLayer( vlayer )
mAtlas.setComposerMap( mAtlasMap )

mAtlas.setFilenamePattern( 'output_' || $feature )
mAtlas.beginRender()
for i in range(0, mAtlas.numFeatures()):
mAtlas.prepareForFeature( i )
expected = QString( output_%1 ).arg(i+1)
assert mAtlas.currentFilename() == expected

mAtlas.endRender()

Can you share the code you're using ? Or a stack trace or a line number where

What version / git revision are you using ?

You have to call setCoverageLayer and setComposerMap before calling
beginRender(), is it the case ?

I have also found that running myAtlas.numFeatures() always returns 0 even
though I have added a layer that has data using setCoverageLayer().

This is linked to the previous issue. Features are iterated over during
beginRender()

I did take a look at this page and followed the steps in the test:

 https://github.com/qgis/Quantum-GIS/blob/master/tests/src/python/test_
 qgsatlascomposition.py

but I cannot get it to work in my script. I cannot get the test to work
either. It always errors on the beginRender() line.

I was about to say everything work fine here, but ... I realized there is
something wrong with the last changes I did.

Should be fixed with this:
https://github.com/qgis/Quantum-GIS/pull/516

Not sure if it will fix your problem ...
