Agreed: same thing for GRASS (and its QGIS plugin). It is difficult to
come out with a solution that is both simple and flexible.
The current inflexible situation adopted by QGIS is obviously
suboptimal. Moreover, the behaviour of various core plugins and commands
is inconsistent, sometimes saving the extension (*.tif), sometimes not,
and sometimes saving in a different format.
