[Qgis-user] Couldn't load SIP, Python support disabled

I recently installed Qgis on Fedora 30. But did not get python support
working and can see only 8 plugins available. I also tried installing newer

Re: [QGIS-it-user] [OSGeo4W] errore di installazione

2019-06-25 Per discussione nformica
Ciao Stefano,

Credevo fosse un bug ormai scomparso e invece a quanto pare no!
Tra l'altro non succede sempre con tutti i Windows non capisco da cosa
può dipendere.

Avete qualche consiglio ?

Saluti
Nino Formica

Was reported at https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/29885

What is annoying is that I fixed that issue 2 years ago per
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/3034.
I can't see what has changed on GDAL or QGIS side regarding how and when files
are opened in read-only vs read-write mode since then. So perhaps this would
be related to a change on MapInfo side how it opens files in newer versions.

Re: [Qgis-user] Version 3.4.7 (LTR) is locking MapInfo tab files

2019-06-25 Per discussione Bo Victor Thomsen

The original bug: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/29885

The original fix: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/3034

Excerpt from the bugfix:

 *rouault * commented on 27 Apr 2016

"Additional precision for completness. The name of the PR is maybe
a bit misleading. It should read "concurrent opening".
Modification in MapInfo while a dataset is opened by QGIS is not
possible. But this was already the case with GDAL 1.X. But
modification in QGIS is possible and MapInfo will see the changes.
MapInfo apparently needs an exclusive access to the files to allow
saving them. Fixing that isn't in the immediate scope of interest
and would require both changes in GDAL and QGIS so that QGIS asks
GDAL to close file descriptors when it doesn't need access to the
 files."

As I read this excerpt, it means that it's not possible for MapInfo to
update a tab-file while an instance QGIS is using it whether it's for
update or for read purposes.

I don't know if there is other bugfixes that has addressed this issue.

I've been in the same situation a while back with an organisation having
2000 - 3000 tab files. My solution was to put all data from the tab
files into a Postgres database and create tab files that "pointed" to
the new tables, and let both MapInfo and QGIS users use the Postgres
tables in stead. This was a long and exhausting process but it - for
once and all - solved the concurrency problems.

It not the mechanical process to convert the tab-file to a table that is
the problem. That is a task that can be solved using ex. ogr2ogr. The
worst problem is deciding which version of each and every tab file that
is the most current and complete and choosing this tab file for
conversion to postgres.

[Qgis-user] Version 3.4.7 (LTR) is locking MapInfo tab files

2019-06-25 Per discussione Paul Wittle
Hi,

I believe there may already be a bug ticket for this but I've found my
deployment of QGIS is causing MapInfo errors when opening MapInfo tab files. It
happens when you load the TAB file and also when you open the project and it
even happens when a TAB file is open but not rendering.

This is a pretty major issue for people that are looking at a migration as we
are so we need to get this one fixed asap. Does anyone know if there is a fix
being worked on or is funding required to get this one fixed asap?

Hi Lars -

Have you tried to take a look at the processing framework ? It works
appr. like the FME Desktop, but inside QGIS.

If you simply want to change / edit the attribute-values of multiple
records from a layer in one operation, then have a look at:

2019-06-25 Per discussione Bernhard Ströbl

Hi Paul,

thanks for your feedback. I figured out that the label-positioning
buttons do indeed work but I was after setting an x-y offset for a point
symbol.

I created a ticket meanwhile:

Indeed you're right.

Actually you just have to use the "Move Label" map tool directly on
labels, and their positions will be stored in auxiliary storage
automatically. If you want to manually create corresponding fields, you
have to use the "Store Data in the project" button in data defined menu.

2019-06-25 Per discussione Bo Victor Thomsen

Hi Lars -

It's actually easy - you can ex. use the *python console *(Ctrl-Alt-P).
It will get you a console window like this:*

*

The rightmost window is a nifty little python editor with syntax
highlighting and autocompletion. It is activated by clicking the third
button (from the left) in the console window.

It's like the MapBasic window in MapInfo on steroids.

Take a look at:
https://www.qgistutorials.com/en/docs/3/getting_started_with_pyqgis.html
for getting you started.

Re: [Qgis-user] Table manager

2019-06-25 Per discussione Etienne Trimaille
Indeed Table Manager was already deprecated for some functions in QGIS 2
IIRC.

But it depends what you wanted to do with TableManager. If you simply
wanted to rename fields, you can go in the vector layer properties,
"fields" tab and rename columns there. No need to use the "refactor fields"
algorithms, which will regenerate a new layer.
