Re: [Qgis-user] Proposal for QGIS-related blog

2012-10-16 Thread Victor Olaya
For the main part of your proposal, are you thinking of something in the
manner of www.r-bloggers.com? It's a really useful resource, with enough
posts from enough varied sources to be really worth following.
qgis.org/planet/ could fit the bill - with more content from more sites.

Well, that is a rather big thing! I am not thinking of an aggregator,
but more like a blog written by several people, with a common standard
of quality and a common subject (In my case, as I said, i would like
to incude tipstrick for QGIS, not just any QGIS-related news)

I see it more like a book of chapters with different authors and an
editor (in this case all contributors would be editors, but there will
be some reviewing or some guidelines, etc)

Spanish readers might be familiar with the amazings.es blog, which is
the reference blog in terms of science in Spain, and which is written
by a group of science bloggers that collaborate on this while they
also write their own blogs. I was thinking about something like
that...

Thanks for the interest

Regards

Seems like the QGIS wiki needs serious editorial leadership and editing (and
probably some search-engine optimisation) more than anything else; I
personally find it horrible to use the Redmine system, too. Maybe that's the
 best place to focus efforts?

There was a change in the code because AFAIK it took ages to scan

I am not sure but I think because of this reason there is only a -1

2012-10-16 Thread Andreas Neumann
Hi,

In the item properties list of the legend item you can define a wrap
character(s), e.g. \n. Then you can edit an individual legend entry and
change the text, placing the wrap character(s) where you want.

You need at least QGIS 1.8 oder master. This feature wasn't present in
QGIS 1.7 or earlier.

Hope this helps,
Andreas

Re: [Qgis-user] How to change the data source?

2012-10-16 Thread Etienne Tourigny
Why do you need to change the datasource, instead of simply opening a
new layer? Are there things like symbology that must be preserved?

If it's for creating maps, you can use the Print Composer, and simply
change layers.

If you need the same symbology, in the dev version (qgis-1.9) you can
setup symbology defaults for new layers, in the project properties.

based on the wiki entries I added a website with a few notes on our recent

Qgis is also able to save styling as SLD (Styled Layer Descriptor-Files)
using some plugins in version 1.8 but I have never tried that and I don’t
know if ArcGis can use it:

 Thanx :)
Do you know if for instance ArcGIS can read qml-files? Or are there any
other format, so even ArcGIS user can read styles?

 2012/10/15 magerlin m...@ramboll.dk

This might be equal to Anitas answer, but you can also do it manually:

Just name the qml file like the rest of the shape file family and save it
in the same folder as the other files:

 My_file.shp
 My_file.dbf
 My_file.shx
 *My_file.qml*

When you open My_file.shp in Qgis it will then be styled by the settings in
 My_file.qml.

[Qgis-user] Foss4G 2013 CfP Academic Track

2012-10-16 Thread Barend Köbben
FOSS4G 2013 Nottingham Geo for All

[follow the news on http://2013.foss4g.org for upcoming CfP fro other tracks,
workshops, etcetera]

Academic Track: “Science for Open Source, Open Source for Science”

First Call for Papers

The FOSS4G 2013 Academic Track is bringing together researchers, developers,
users and practitioners carrying out research and development in the geospatial
and the free and open source fields.

With the Academic Track motto “Science for Open Source, Open Source for
Science”, we aim to attract academic papers describing

 * the use of open source geospatial software and data, in and for scientific
research, as well as

 * academic endeavours to conceptualize, create, assess, and teach open
source geospatial software and data.

Based on these categories, to promote a strong connection between the Academic
Track and the other elements of FOSS4G 2013, we hope for contributions within
the following themes:

 * Data Quality, Software Quality and Service Quality

 *   Community Building

 * Doing more for less: Assessment of costs and benefits of open source
applications and open source business models

 * Use of Open Data to inform public services

 * FOSS vs. FOSS4g: Is spatial special?

 * Architectures and frameworks for open source software and data

 * Teaching Geospatial Sciences with open source solutions

 * Open Source GIS application use cases : Government, Participatory GIS,
Location based services, Health, Energy, Water, Climate change, etc.

 * Human-Computer Interfaces and Usability in and around Open GI systems

We invite academics and researchers to submit full papers in English, of
maximum 8,000 words, before the deadline of 1 February 2013. More detailed
requirements, regarding layout, formatting and the submission process, will be
published in the 2nd Call for Papers, expected late November 2012.

Your contributions will be reviewed (double-blind) by a diverse reviewing
committee of experts in the field, who will be asked to assess the papers on
originality and academic rigour, as well as interest for the wider FOSS4G
community. We expect to select 20-25 papers for presentation and publication.
From this selection, a maximum of 8-10 papers will be given the opportunity for
inclusion in a special issue of the renowned international journal Transactions
in GIS [1]. The remaining papers will be published in the online OSGEO Journal
[2].

We would like to specifically invite “early stage researchers” (PhD students,
PostDocs) to use this opportunity to aim for a high-ranking publication.

Authors of all selected papers will be expected to present their work in detail
in a separate Academic Track (with 20-30 minute slots), and will also be given
the opportunity to pitch the central theme of their paper in short 'lightning'
talks to the larger community, to generate attention and cross-pollenate with
industry, developers and users.

Important Dates:

 * now: 1st Call for Papers

 * Late 2012: 2nd CfP (with detailed submission procedures and requirements)

 * 1 February 2013: Submission of full papers

 *   1 April 2013: Reviewing decisions

 *   1 May 2013: Paper revision deadline

 * 15 September 2013: publication of selected papers
  - 8-10 papers in Early View (on-line) Transactions in GIS
  - others in on-line OSGEO Journal
 *   17-21 September 2013: FOSS4G Conference

 * early 2014: printed issue Transactions in GIS

2012-10-16 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
I think you could try the QConsolidate plugin (not sure if for 1.8 or only
master at the moment, things are moving too fast ;) ).
This exports all your scattered shape files into one single Layer-Folder
and creates a project file with all your layout stuff.
I only tested it for fun cause i didn't need to really use it, but from my
experience it's perfect for creating projects and then shipping them
somewhere else (But does not work when you have other sources than shape
like spatialite etc.)

For single layers, you can use the Zip Layers plugin. This creates a zip
file with all those shape files and a style file, so when you send this
zip by mail, the recipient can load it with the same styling as you
created it

(all info without warranty ;) )

one installed without conflicting with QGIS or other applications?

Thanks,
