[Qgis-user] OSGEO/QGIS Meetup at Georgia Geospatial Conference 2014 in Athens Georgia
On Monday October 6th (workshop day) 2014, I'm teaching a OpenStreetMap for GIS People formatted workshop at the Georgia Geospatial Conference . At 5:30 p.m. EST I plan on having a meetup in the room in which I'm teaching the class (in the Classic Center - Room Athena C). 10 Minutes into the meeting we will most likely relocate to a local eating and drinking establishment to solve the world's problems and come up with a plan for the group. I will leave as much of a trail as to where we are going that is allowed by the local litter/sign ordinance. If you're interested in FOSS4G/QGIS and you are going to be at the conference - please attend. If you can't but are still interested - http://www.meetup.com/qgis_us/Atlanta-QGIS-Users-Group/ We plan on covering all sorts of topics from QGIS to PostGIS to anything else that in which the group is interested. * What is QGIS? * Have no clue what Free and Open Source Software is for GIS? * Will it work with the Commercial stuff? * Why is OpenStreetMap? * When does PostGIS Day happen? * This stuff is Free - it can't be that good...Can it? * Map Server Serves Maps? * Leaflet? Because it's fall? * Make GIS Fun again? WHAT? Everyone is welcome from companies to casual enthusiasts to the person that didn't wish to sit in their rooms on Monday night. Once we get through October 6th plan on a bigger meeting within Atlanta. [Qgis-user] QGIS hackfest Linuxhotel News
Hi, I have some not so good news for all who arrive on wednesday and before thursday late afternoon. I was just informed by the linuxhotel, that they will have another big event on thursday, 2nd october. They have given priority to this event, because that's what they make money with (we only pay a very reduced price). For us it means, we only have one smaller room (maybe for 15 people) available on thursday until maybe 7pm and all others have to split up to several other rooms in the linuxhotel. We will find a solution anyway, there is internet everywhere, but I wanted to inform you, so you are not disappointed, if we are not able to work all together in one room until thursday evening. Whish you all a save journey to Essen! Regards Otto ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

On 2014/09/25 14:54, Steven Campbell wrote: Hi all Does anyone know if QGIS is affected at all by the bash bug? Linux is affected by this bug, not QGIS. So if you're running Linux, then yes, you may be affected. You can check by opening a terminal window, and running this (cut paste it into the window: env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c 'echo hello' If you get the Vulnerable echo from this, then yes, your version of bash has the bug. You can fix this by updating to the latest bash version. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bash (Debian based Linux assumed, eg: Ubuntu) After running this, rerun the env line above to see if it is fixed. If still buggy, then you probably have an older version of linux, so you'll have to download bash and recompile it on your system. (or upgrade to a newer linux, then add the newest bash using the above apt-get..) To recompile bash, you'll need build-essentials installed. If you have an older (no longer supported linux, you may be up against a wall if you can't run gcc make), but assuming your installed linux version already has gcc, make etc installed, run the following: mkdir src cd src wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.3.tar.gz #download all patches for i in $(seq -f %03g 0 25); do wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.3-patches/bash43-$i; done tar zxvf bash-4.3.tar.gz cd bash-4.3 #apply all patches for i in $(seq -f %03g 0 25);do patch -p0 ../bash43-$i; done #build and install ./configure make make install cd .. cd .. rm -r src Then reboot (to be safe all previous bash shells have closed) and of course run the env. command to see if your bug has gone away. Disclaimer: I got this methodology from http://askubuntu.com/questions/528101/what-is-the-cve-2014-6271-bash-vulnerability-and-how-do-i-fix-it My one linux box is current and the apt-get install bash fixed the problem. My server is still running an older outdated linux, and the above compile-install DID work on it. You use this methodology at your own risk - but it worked on both my linux boxes (this morning). Hope this helps. Re: [Qgis-user] How to Make a project layer editable
Hi Tom, in QGIS you can only edit layers, when they are stored in the data formats shapefile, SpatialLite, PostGIS or other databanks. So if you want to edit your layer, you first have to save as shapefile or import to a databank. ralf -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/How-to-Make-a-project-layer-editable-tp5164197p5164223.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Hi Tom, QGIS uses the OGR library to read and (optionally) write certain data formats. Re: [Qgis-user] How to Make a project layer editable
To be honest - I'm not sure if ArcGIS will edit coverages any more (just checked). It will convert to and from but I didn't see anything that indicated edit. I think your best bet is to convert it to a shapefile (or postgis/spatialite) if possible. If memory serves me right you could store a mix of geometry in a coverage so watch as you are converting.
