Re: [Qgis-user] minimum and recommended specs for a laptop?

2018-07-19 Thread Patrick Dunford

Good afternoon

An i7 CPU is very powerful and will have more than enough capability but
it depends on the exact tasks. I carry out all my mapping with Pentium G
CPUs in my computers (i1 equivalent) with Debian as the OS.

I would think the amount of RAM you have is probably of more
significance than different models of i7. You can also choose a distro
or desktop environment that is resource efficient, currently I prefer
XFCE compared to some of the other resource hungry environments.

You could also consider an SSD as being faster than a regular HDD if
disk swapping may occur.

If your laptop gets too hot it may not be designed for intensive work
and this is probably a factor of the laptop itself not the workload. It
is simply very difficult to fit a cooling solution within most laptop
chassis and a more powerful CPU will need more cooling. A less powerful
CPU may take longer but have less heat output working at full power for
long periods.

[Qgis-user] Ver 2.12.3 open Ver 3.2

2018-07-19 Thread Mike Flannigan

I have a project that I opened in Ver 3.2 and saved in
ver 3.2 at home.  While on the road on my laptop I successfully
opened it in version 2.12.3 Lyon.  It seems to work great on
Lyon.  I sure am surprised it worked and very please that it
works.  Just thought I would mention that.

Re: [Qgis-user] qgz format and non-ascii project names

2018-07-19 Thread Michel Stuyts
If I create a file called test.qgz in QGIS, rename it to tëst.qgz in Windows
Explorer, and load that file in QGIS everything is loaded correct.

If I create a file called tëst.qgz in QGIS, rename it to test.qgz in Windows
Explorer, and load that file in QGIS, no layers are loaded.

So the problem originates when saving the project file, not when loading it.

Confirmed on Win10. When loading a qgz-file with special characters, the name

Re: [Qgis-user] minimum and recommended specs for a laptop?

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

My experience is that over heating laptops is often caused by dust in old fans.
Fans can be changed or cleaned but it does take some skills to do that. A
shop can do it for 50-100$. The second problem is that companies use cheap
parts.

I would go the computer that has a cpu made with the finest lithography (14mn)
but even that will not help with a cheap computer. I did not look at the HQ
options you are referring to. Go to Intel and the the exact spect for the cpu
serial number. Look at lithography, cache, onboard video card ...

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/processors/core/i7-processors.html

Gaming laptops may help as they are generally made with more rugged parts. You
may also look at professional laptop built for CAD. They will generally come
with pro video cards that may not be very helpful but the rest of the computer
should be better built. I am usually happy with a pro level Lenovo laptop.
(Not found in a store). They last long, are more expensive but generally come
with a limited intel video card. That is the trade off.

My recommendations is that you should always consider the maximum memory you
can put in the laptop as that is the only upgrade you can do appart from the
HD. Make sure you can change the HD (not an option with most resent MACs). Buy
and SSD if you can. That is probably the most important option (along with
memory) you can select that will speed up large datasets.

[Qgis-user] FW: QGIS Proposal Document

2018-07-19 Thread GILLEN Finbar
Hi All,

I have been using QGIS for about a year and a half now and find it extremely
useful!

I have recently moved jobs from to an insurance provider and they use GIS at a
fairly small level (Viewer license with an online GIS system).

I am looking to integrate QGIS within our team so we can use it for adhoc
queries and more larger scale projects.

My manager has asked me to pull together a document on how we could use it
within our department, does anyone have an outline where they have had to
create a proposal document for QGIS integration they could pass on? It would be
good to use as a starting point.

Thanks,
Finbar

Re: [Qgis-user] CRS was undefined: defaulting to CRS EPSG:4326 - WGS 84

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
The error as noted by other can come from the raster that has as missing CRS
file. Same reasoning applies to raster files. The .tiff format can have and
internal tag to specify the CRS. You can write the tag using gdal edit.

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
You can simply left or right click the layer in the layer panel and define the
layer CRS. What you are seing is not an error but your default option to do
when your Qgis tries to open a file that does not contain a CRS. You can go to
your system setting to the section on “what to do when opening a file without a
CRS.” Select “ask” and not “use default CRS or use project CRS “.

Shp files (I guess you are using that format) uses a .prj extension file for
the CRS. If that file is missing, you will have that message.
