installing an earlier version circumvent this problem (3.4 maybe)?

[Qgis-user] Aggregation in layout legend

2020-03-11 Thread Alexis R.L.
Greetings everyone,

I would like to know if some of you would benefit from fully
functional aggregate expression in the legend.

What does this mean? Let's say you have a layer with x symbols representing
distinct type of housing units, if you want to know the median income,
average population ,etc of each category. You could do so with an
expression in the legend, which is actually functional for anything that is
not an aggregate that take into account the symbol subset.

You could also have those values change if you decide to add an extra
filtering condition to limit the calculation on features that are visible
in the map extent, this way you can use an atlas to print out everything
without changing the values manually.

I have made a QEP for this already (
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/137) and PR are
pending but I feel like I'm the only one that would benefit from such a
feature, hence why I am asking if there is an interest from other users
regarding such a thing.

Thanks!

Re: [Qgis-user] CRS Errors

2020-03-11 Thread Priv.-Doz. Dr. Maria Shinoto
Hi,

last week I asked a similar question, but I am working with QGIS 3.4. There may
be a problem with the official Japanese files I downloaded, but it looks
similar.

My CRS is JGD2011:Plane Rectangular II for Kyūshū, which is EPSG:6670. But I
get EPSG:102611, which cannot be found in the EPSG database, and the Japanese
administration told me that it does not exist, but the map is OK and can be
interpreted as EPSG 6670.

I wonder whether it is a problem with QGIS in my case as well?

Here are the data for one of those layers:

EPSG:102611 - JGD_2011_Japan_Zone_2 - Projiziert

Re: [Qgis-user] CRS Errors

2020-03-11 Thread Tyler Veinot
So bug report?... My $length calcs are messed up too, I had to make a field
and use ArcGIS to get the lengths and then go back to QGIS and use the
field value for my script. I tried turning off the geoid in the settings
and set the measurements to use planametric but it didn't work.
I really don't like QGIS changing my CRS's, and so far keeping me locked
out of making custom transformations using my own GSB files. In the past I
had to make my own prj's to get certain surveys to translate into NAD83
properly.
Well anyway, I am going to muddle along for now hopefully a solution
presents itself.
Thanks for the reply;

Yes, I have also noticed this. I think it started in some point rev of
3.10.x. I still see it in 3.12. Most of my work is using a WMS layer with
EPSG:3857. The ellipsoidal calculation would need to start with coordinates
in degrees and I wonder if it is passing the rectangular coordinates. I
think this either used to work or the default measurement used to be
cartesian and I never tried ellipsoidal because I am usually concerned with
distances of a few meters.

Hi,
I agree with Régis on this one (including 42). Each question is a mini PhD
thesis. You might get more responses if you write your needs instead and ask
if QGIS can help. I still will give you a few very short answers.

If you don’t have a GIS installed, then the benefits are clear. Search for
what a GIS does and QGIS pretty much does it or can be programmed to do it
with Python. You can also asked for stuff to be added by developers and
contribute financially or otherwise to develop these projects. The user and
developer lists are very good and full of people ready to help. QGIS is
generally confortable working with vector, mesh and raster data. You can also
do some basic remote sensing stuff. You can work with LiDAR data but it is not
optimized to work with point clouds. I use QGIS and CloudCompare, Meshlab,
PDAL and Lastools (the OpenSource tools) for this.

>
> 3. What plug-ins have been developed and that are very useful.

Visite the QGIS plugin page. Plugins can be installed by the user after the
installation of QGIS. This really depends on your needs. If you are into remote
sensing, then a plugin like semi-automatic classification makes sense.
https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/popular/

>
> 4. Data export formats

QGIS uses the GDAL library to do many of the read and write operations. Since
both projects are OpenSource, the goal is to open the software by using as many
formats as possible. https://gdal.orgindex.html/. Some proprietary software
will lock people in by using data formats that can only be read by there
software. This is not the QGIS approche. Data formats in QGIS are open. The
QGIS Project format (a file useful for opening groups of data files and making
things like print layouts) is also Open but not currently read, to my
knowledge, by other software. This is generally the case with most project
files or workspace files in GIS.

>
> 5. Comparison to ArcGIS.

I cannot not go into a detailed description of differences. Both are competent
GIS capable of working with raster and vector data. I have been working with
QGIS for over 10 years for research and work and feel no need to invest time or
money in ArcGIS. Most of my time devoted to Arc is dedicated to trouble
shooting the software for Arc users. Therefor, what you learn on QGIS is
applicable to Arc and vice versa. GIS after all, is a science and a method,
not a software. Some stuff is easier and faster to do with Arc and some stuff
easier and faster to do with QGIS. I think statistical modelling with
conditional loops are something ESRI does well but I don’t make use of that. I
would most likely go with R for something like this. I don’t need to point out
the obvious that QGIS is free and OpenSource.

Just in case the correct person does not read your mail and does not raise

Re: [Qgis-user] Enquiries

2020-03-11 Thread Régis Haubourg
Hi,

*42 ! *

Sorry for the geek's joke. :)

More seriously, what you ask for is the holy grail of any software and
cannot be discussed theoretically but confronted to real use cases and your
context of use.

And another point specific to QGIS, don't spend too much time on studying
and comparing it to others, because it is moving so fast that your
conclusion will get outdated in a few months. My advice would be to:

- test QGIS quickly by yourself quickly, then
- Isolate your more critical use cases, then
- hire someone to do a training / consultancy to learn how to use QGIS (and
associated Databases) efficiently for those use cases. A certified trainer
is a guarantee of quality here (chack the certification program on the
website)
- identify what's missing to you
- have someone fix or implement those gaps, either by a plugin if this is
very specific to you or a proof of concept, or by a core contribution too
QGIS
- get ready to update easily QGIS in your organisation so that you can test
and deploy early, and be able to fix QGIS while it is in its maintenance
period.
- deploy /enjoy
- get ready to embrace the open source philosophy and join OSGEO /
QGIS.org Meet with us in the contributor's meetings. This is not mandatory
;-)

And during this time, keep on reading blog / tutorials / documentation,
don't be afraid to ask specific questions here you can't find any answer on
the web. The more specific, the more community help you will get.

And to try to answer, I see QGIS installed everywhere I go - even in pro
ESRI places - and it adresses almost all use cases of standard GIS, and
goes far beyond other for mapping.
Surveying, environnement, mining, geology, hydrology, land planning,
network utilitie, research (even in Antartic).. etc..
And QGIS is a perfect tool to take benefit of databases, analysis power of
python or R, topological and algorithm richness of GRASS / SAGA / GDAL /
OTB, etc..
So QGIS can't be analysed alone, that would be unfair.
And finally the open source model implies to get involved to implement what
you miss. This is how QGIS grows. here is not big funder behind QGIS, only
contributors, among them many are professionals you can hire.

Best regards
