Re: [Qgis-user] Square Buffer

2023-09-30 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Oops, including the list.

Also, having now written the response and re-read your question, I would
guess that the coordinate system you are using is causing the distortion
you see in the result.

I'd be curious to see what others on the list might suggest as the best
option for crs as I think even state plane would be distorted at least a
little.

---‐--

Hi, not in front of my computer so I can't test but I would recommend
first, creating a round buffer with a diameter equal to the square side you
are looking for, and then second, using the "extent" tool that's in one of
the vector tools subcategories to extract the layer extent, creating the
square you need.

That should create a "square" although, importantly, the idea of a square
in the gis world is a little fraught as the coordinate system you are using
can sometimes produce odd results.

I would, at a minimum, use the measure tool to double check that what looks
like a square truly has a height equal to its width.

Re: [Qgis-user] Question Concerning Incorrect Color Shading in QGIS

2023-09-11 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi Aqshems,

To help move this along, I'd recommend opening a fresh qgis instance,
making a new user profile, and then dragging in your data source and
rebuilding the symbology.

If you get what you expect without any problems, I would then copy the
layer and paste it into the original qgis file. Then see if it remains as
expected.

If you run into issues working through those steps this will be closer to a
reproducible example of the problem. You can come back to the list to share
the data source, qgis file and version info from help >> about.

Re: [Qgis-user] Building footprint extraction from satellite image

Hi,

Not exactly what your asking for but have you seen the Microsoft building
footprints work?

https://github.com/microsoft/USBuildingFootprints

That data, in combination with rapid or the mapwithai josm plugin has been
helpful to me on building footprints work.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Rapid

I've definitely seen problems with the footprints that need to be fixed
before they're added to osm but I would guess any image recognition based
footprints would need some cleanup.

Glad it worked out!

As long as you rename every file in the shapefile renaming shoukd be fine.
Renaming just the .shp file will cause problems.

You might consider:
 http://switchfromshapefile.org/

Thanks to whoever on this list shared that originally.

Re: [Qgis-user] Error - Qgis files getting corrupted after saving

2023-08-21 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi Sandra,

When you say "data" are you referring to spatial data saved in something
like a shapefile geopackage etc, or the actual qgis file ending in .qgz or
.qgs?

If it is the actual qgis file itself that you are seeing corrupted, I would
not expect a qgis file created by a newer version to be backwards
compatible with and older version of qgis. I often see people using older
versions run into weird problems when opening a file created by a newer
version. Perhaps others will say otherwise but I don't expect this to a
problem that can be solved. All users should be on a common version for the
best experience.

If its spatial data you're seeing corrupted that is something that should
be solvable anf sharing what file type is being used might get you helpful
suggestions.

As a note, because opening and saving a qgis file with a different version
can cause problems across versions, like loosing symbology settings, I
backup my qgis work at least once a day so that I have something recent to
fall back to if an issue like this occurs.

Best,

Hugh

Re: [Qgis-user] problem with GRASS custom variables

2023-08-05 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi Martin, I don't use grass with qgis much but I do have a guess. When
you look at your installed programs, is it possible there are options for
"qgis" and then also a listing specifically for "qgis with grass".
Different operating environments might explain why you can't import from
grass as expected when opening gui qgis.

Hopefully someone has a more informed suggestion but this seemed worth
mentioning.

Hi, the two things I would try are 1, Saving the file as a .qgs file
instead of .qgz and 2, saving to a simple filepath like desktop or
downloads if you are not doing so already.

It might also be worth trying to save the file to a geopackage instead of
as a stand alone file.

[Qgis-user] Dot Density Symbology

2023-07-26 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi all,

I've been producing dot density maps for demographics work by using postgis
to assign points randomly within a polygon with the number of points
determined by, for example, the total number of a population sub-group
residing in that polygon.

I"m wondering if there might be a way to do this directly from the polygons
in QGIS with symbology.

I've looked through the resource sharing plugin without luck. I dont' think
the geometry generator can handle such a task but maybe there's a way?

Here's (apologies for the closed source link) an example of the type of
map/symbology I'm trying to describe.
https://www.arcgis.com/apps/mapviewer/index.html?webmap=30d2e10d4d694b3eb4dc4d2e58dbb5a5

Thanks for any suggestions!

[Qgis-user] visibility when selecting one of several points in a location

2023-06-29 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi all,

Sometimes when working with data, especially points, I'll have a stack of
several points in the same location, usually when the accuracy of the x/y
values is low.

In a lot of cases, if I'm selecting a point in a "stack" it will not appear
selected since it's covered by another point.

My understanding is that point drawing order is a function of the
datasource's row order.

I can solve my problem by using rule based symbology consistent with the
selection expression and turning off the "else" rule.

I'm wondering if there is any other shortcut I might use to avoid
rebuilding the symbology. Is there any way to set the drawing order so that
a selected feature is at the top? Or maybe to highlight a selected feature
so that it's slightly larger in addition to yellow.

thought I'd ask about existing solutions before considering putting
together a feature request/proposal/pr to expand the size of a selected
point/line/polygons.

Thanks!

2023-03-06 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Thomas, not the solution you are looking for most likely but I rarely use
the qgis file navigator.

Generally I can either drag files in from windows file explorer directly or
paste in a file path, replacing \ with / as needed. Shift - right click
will allow you to copy the path of a file.

The one exception to this I run into occasionally is renaming a layer in a
gpkg, in that case I still navigate to the gpkg in the browser and rename
there, but maybe someone has a workaround for that too.

Best, hugh

Re: [Qgis-user] use Binary (Blob) in writeAsVectorFormat

2023-02-03 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi Chris, thanks for that!

It would not have surprised me if the attribute datatype was simply not
compatible with shapefile, plenty of other things are not.

What I'm seeing in QGIS is that the gui interface for exporting a layer has
an option for handling a binary blob attribute type and indeed when the
option is checked, the new shape file is created without a warning or
error.

What I'm trying to figure out, I think, is how to put that option to work
via pyqgis.

Is there perhaps a way to see the exact command that the export data
interface is running successfully? I think ive seen the processing plugins
show the command to be run, or at least all the parameters in the interface
while a process is going, but the export data utility just closes and shows
progress in the bottom of the main qgis window as it works.

Alternatively, If there is an example somewhere of how to exclude
attributes by type when exporting with pyqgis I could just exclude
attributes that are causing problems for now. I've searched around for that
a bit but haven't turned up an exact example of it. It's straightforward to
get and check the types of a layers attributes but I haven't figured out
how to pass a subset of attributes to the writeasvector function.

Thanks!

2023-02-03 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
to follow up as I continue to work on this,

I mistakenly understood the attribute type "binary" as a Boolean, but I
think it's in fact an arbitrary value stored as binary. That is to say, not
necessarily True/False or 0/1 but a series of 0/1's storing a value.

If I can save it to the shapefile that would be great but I'm going to work
on filtering those attributes out of what's saved as that's an acceptable
solution too I think.

[Qgis-user] use Binary (Blob) in writeAsVectorFormat

2023-02-03 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
Hi,

I'm attempting to use pyqgis to export a few things to shapefile.

the code below is working well except that a few of the attributes are
incompatible with shapefiles (amazing) lack of a binary datatype.

```py
pathToFile = "C:/Users/hkelley/Downloads/test_exports/
layers = QgsProject.instance().mapLayers()
for layer_id, layer in layers.items():
print(layer.name())
QgsVectorFileWriter.writeAsVectorFormat( layer,  pathToFile+ layer.name()
+ ".shp", "utf-8", layer.crs(), driverName="ESRI Shapefile" )
```

I see in the manual export options that I can check a box telling the
export process to use "Use Binary (BLOB)". Image linked below for clarity
[0]

I haven't yet figured out how to pass that option to writeAsVectorFormat.

any suggestions?

Iv'e had a pretty thorough look through the docs for writeAsVctorFormat, is
the solution related to
QgsVectorFileWriter.BoolOption(QgsVectorFileWriter.BoolOption)?

Re: [Qgis-user] Fwd: Your message to Qgis-user awaits moderator approval

2023-01-10 Thread Hugh Kelley via QGIS-User
 Hi,

(finally found the time/motivation to redo this question)

Wondering if there is a way to label features horizontal relative to the
page with an offset from the feature and callout lines.

Callout lines are simple enough, as is setting labels a certain distance
from the feature. However, this only seems possible when using the
Placement General Settings option "parallel" or "curved".

When I switch to "horizontal", the "distance" option for offsetting the
label disappears, seen in the screen shots below.

Maybe there's a way with the geometry generator or something to accomplish
this? I haven't found an option to set the label orientation explicitly
besides using the move and rotate labels tools.

This is all on 3.22.

Thanks for any suggestions

Re: [Qgis-user] multiple csv file import

2022-11-15 Thread Hugh Kelley via Qgis-user
David, this was my first thought when i saw this question as well.

however, I didn't look for very long but I haven't seen a way to tell
ogr2ogr to read columns in a csv as the lat/lon and write those as points
to the shapefile. I generally write a csv to postgres as a non-spatial
table and then process the lat lon columns with postgis.

Are there arguments for ogr2ogr that can do this?

[Qgis-user] graduated symbology classes update

2022-10-20 Thread Hugh Kelley via Qgis-user
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has a fix for a minor annoyance.

When using graduated symbology, if I want to change the number of classes
from the default 5 to something else, there's an easy field to update. If
I'm changing it to a double digit number, or changing a double digit number
to a different double digit number, the number of classes is updated as
soon as I make the first key stroke.

for example to turn 10 into 15, QGIS calculates 10 -> 1 -> 15.

I can turn off automatic updating of the map which saves some time, but it
still needs to calculate the class breaks.

Just wondering whether there's a fix I'm not seeing or whether it's worth
logging an issue about.

This is on 3.22.

image of the graduated symbology interface in case it clarifies what I'm
talking about.

thanks

I've been seeing occasionally for at least a few months that when I export
an atlas, there is sometimes a page duplicated in the resulting pdf.

I haven't been able to isolate the problem at all so haven't filed a bug
report but wanted to ask if anyone else has seen that.

It hasn't been a huge problem for me but if it's widespread maybe there's a

[Qgis-user] add strava heatmap to QGIS

2022-05-06 Thread Hugh Kelley via Qgis-user
Hi,

I'm hoping to add the strava global heatmap as a tile layer in QGIS.

I've done this successfully in the OSM JOSM and ID Editors without a
problem. this set of instructions/browser plugin is super helpful.
https://github.com/zekefarwell/josm-strava-heatmap

without sharing my credentials, the url is just:

https://heatmap-external-{switch:a,b,c}.
strava.com/tiles-auth/all/hot/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png?Key-Pair-Id=ID_STRING=VERY_LONG_STRING

It seems that I should be able to plug the same url into the QGIS as an
xyz layer, but when I do it doesn't work. There's no error or warning, just
a blank map window. I tried including my strava login in the credentials
section but this didn't do anything and isn't necessary in the JOSM or ID
editors.

Just wondering if anyone can think of any further fixes to try or has
successfully done this themselves. The heatmap api has changed a bit in the
past couple years so what worked in the past may not work correctly today.

Thanks!

Hugh

Re: [Qgis-user] WG: drop down Vektor not opening

2022-03-17 Thread Hugh Kelley via Qgis-user
Hi Michael,

Just a guess, but check in plugins >> manage and install plugins, whether
the "processing" plugin is installed and activated by checking the box next
to the plugin name.

I'm not sure why but occasionally on fresh installs the processing plugin
is not checked on by default. That provides the majority of vector tools.
