Re: [Qgis-user] [QGIS-Developer] Announce - migrate our mailing lists to Discourse

2024-04-12 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
I am excited about the move to discourse and the possibilities that it
opens up. I am concerned and sad to hear so many voices upset about the
move. I hope the transition goes well and we don't lose too many voices.

Sadly it looks like there was a port of the Raster Calculator to C++ and

Re: [Qgis-user] Locking Font Characteristics for Text Items in Print Layout

2023-12-08 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
Tim,
I have never had the font style change on me after reopening a QGIS file.
In other words they should be locked by default.
To me this sounds like a bug or there is an issue with the way fonts are
working on your system or your QGIS file is getting corrupted in some way.
If you can share your file or create a simple file showing the issue I
would suggest creating a bug report on the QGIS github site.
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues
The volunteer bug fixers will only be able to fix your issue if they can
reproduce it so if you can create a file with steps that
consistently creates the problem you will have the best chances of getting
it resolved.

Here are some things I would consider trying.
If you are using a different version of QGIS now you could try to download
and use the same version of QGIS that you used previously in case something
changed on the QGIS code that prevented your file from working correctly.
Is it possible that the font you were using previously is no longer
available on your system and QGIS is replacing it with another font?

Good luck

Re: [Qgis-user] Z and Elevation

2023-06-28 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
Manolo,
You may already know this and be asking a deeper question that I am not
understanding but in case you are not:
The Z is the value derived from the geometry itself that QGIS uses to draw
the location of the point.
The Elevation is an attribute associated with the point (a field in the
attribute table).
There are many reasons that these might not be the same.
It could be that they were derived from two different sources or there was
a transformation that occurred that changed the Z value.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Qgis-user] Technical specifications

2023-06-02 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
Hello,
As it was not clear exactly what the needs of the department were I wanted
to offer an alternative perspective.
I have a small planning and design firm and we utilize QGIS healily on all
of our computers. I also teach GIS at a local masters program in planning.
While I agree with the specs put forward by the other respondents if you
are engaging in large geoprocessing tasks or if you want to make sure that
the computer you purchase is somewhat future proof. However, my students
and I do an amazing amount of processing and map creation on much less. I
have 16 GB of ram on my 6 year old windows machine and with the right
optimizations and able to run state wide geoprocessing tasks (I imagine you
could even have less RAM on linux). Some of my students this year somehow
ended up with 8 GB of ram on windows and if they are careful about the
number of programs they have open can easily run town scale GIS processing.

Re: [Qgis-user] Open GPKG layers in read-only mode

2023-04-03 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
Jérémie,
I went and looked at my notes from when I was testing this after QGIS
3.24.1 came out and I had misremembered. Two people can open it at the same
time without the sidecar files being created. We have not had any
problems using gpkgs to read data on google drive for desktop.
Editing is not recommended but we have also been doing that. We are able
edit the geopackages if we are sure only one person will be editing it at a
time. This is almost always the case for us because usually only one person
is working on a project at a time and projects don't share editable data.
Saving edits is a lot slower on the google drive folder for small files
this is not noticeable but for large files this can be painful. I have
noticed that the sidecar files balloon to the size of the original files
when saving when google drive is on which is probably causing the slowness.
If google drive syncing is paused this is not a problem. The other thing I
noticed at the time of my original tests is that if there is more than one
layer in the geopackage after editing one of the layers and editing is
turned off the file does not remove the sidecar files. If there is only one
layer this is not a problem.
Hope that helps.

I use gpkgs in google drive. Since this change
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/47098 which should have happened in qgis
3.24 by default they open without creating sidecar files. However if it
edited or is opened by a second person it will create the sidecar files.

Re: [Qgis-user] [EXTERNAL] Re: Geopackage slow on NAS if not read-only

2023-03-16 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via QGIS-User
This is all beyond my expertise but I have also struggled with the
effective use of gpkg’s. In my case over google drive.
Here is what SQLite (the underlying software for gpkgs) says about using a
SQLite database on a network:
https://www.sqlite.org/useovernet.html

I hope that someday someone implements a system that allows this to work
efficiently as gpkgs are better in many respects than shapefiles. Perhaps
Geodiff could be part of that solution.

[Qgis-user] DXF layer locking

2022-11-21 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via Qgis-user
Hello,
I was excited to discover recently that you can drag and drop DXF layers
into QGIS.
The layer keeps its reference to the dxf and when the dxf is changed the
layer is updated.
The only problem I have had is that if I have the layer open in QGIS
AutoCAD won't let me save the dxf because it thinks it is open in another
program.
Does anyone know if there is a workaround?
A way to load the dxf without telling Windows that it is in use?
As a network layer or something?

I did find that if I use QCAD I do not have a problem saving the DXF.
Unfortunately QCAD does not have all the functionality that we need.

Thanks
-Bas

I find that windows will open the version I installed but continue to say
the previous version when I open it by searching windows. In my case it
says 3.18 but opens 3.26. Could this be happening to you?

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and geopackages in sharepoint environement

2022-08-05 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via Qgis-user
Although it is not recommended we use google drive and as of the latest
release it works ok for most files including Geopackage. In past versions
any time a layer on a geopackage was opened this would cause the file to be
marked as changed and upload the whole file. In the current version (3.26)
this only happens when edit mode is turned on. However saving after edits
is much slower when it is in the Google drive. It appears that the .wal
file decides to load the entire file into itself when in the google drive
before writing the change to the file. Of course this doesn't prevent
people from overwriting each other's changes if two people are concurrently
editing on different machines.
The file path doesn't seem to be a problem if the files are in the same
location relative to the project file on different machines.
I would be interested if at some point someone created a solution that
allowed for diffs on geopackages using Lutra's
https://github.com/MerginMaps/geodiff . I imagine if that worked there
would be an cloud unsynced local version and a cloud synced local version
that you could trigger a diff operation against.

I have been experiencing the same problem. It seems to occur when there are
a lot of elements in the map. Very painful experience. And I agree that it
seems like it shouldn't need to be calculating while you are typing.

[Qgis-user] Mac OS QGIS installer 3.16

2022-04-21 Thread Sebastian Gutwein via Qgis-user
Hello,
I have a student that is trying to install QGIS on her Mac OS. Neither the
latest or the long term version are working for some reason. In the fall
she had 3.16 installed and wanted to try to install it again in case there
was an issue with the latest version. However we can't seem to find 3.16 in
the official repository. I would assume because it was after the switch
from the KyngChaos builds they would be in the QGIS repository here:
https://download.qgis.org/downloads/macOS/ but I only see up to 3.8. Should
I then point her to the KyngChaos version?
Thanks
