Just keep in mind it's only free if you are using it on Amazon servers.
So you'd have to be running QGIS in a EC2 instance. Otherwise you have
pay to run an amazon server for QGIS clients to connect to.

[Qgis-user] HowTo: Dynamic legend from min/max of filtered values

2015-02-02 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

I have a polygon of villages with a certain index value. I want to
create an atlas for each municipality composed of several villages
where the symbology would be the range of index values filtered by
municipality.

I'm looking for ways to dynamically symbolize the index value of the
village polygons. For example, one municipality would have an index
of 1-30, I will symbolize using an equal count of 5 classes taking
into account the min and max range of the index values. Another
municipality would have a different range (i.e. 20-40) so the
symbolizer should take into account the different range and classify
them accordingly.

Is this possible with QGIS 2.6?

[Qgis-user] HOWTO: Import postgis to spatialite incliding .qgs project file

Hi,

We have an internal postgis db for managing our data. Now, we want to
share the data for offline use including the QGIS project file (.qgs)

We can easily import the postgis layers into a single
spatialite/sqlite db, but how do I convert the project file to use the
spatialite db instead of the postgis datasource?

Thanks!

[Qgis-user] Collecting ideas for adding data dependent charts/plots in map composer

2014-10-31 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

I'm trying to brainstorm how to integrate charts within map composer.
This is different from the layer based diagrams currently available in
QGIS layers. What I want is to be able to display charts within map
composer for example, a pie chart (ugh!) of my landcover categories or
a histogram of my raster values, etc. Right now, what I do in map
composer are:
1. create a chart in a separate program and embed as image
2. create a html chart for example with D3 and add it as file using
the HTML frame or directly paste the html in the label box rendered as
html.

Some plugins (i.e. profile tool) have integrated chart plots already.
I wonder how we can integrate this into the map composer. Ideally,
what I want is to prepare the charts all within QGIS map composer that
is able to interact with my layer attributes (i.e. display summary
chart).

Searching the web for plotting APIs I saw the following:
1. many html/js based implmentations like google chart and D3
2. matplotlib for python
3. Qt plotting widgets

Maybe others here have implemented such approach? Any ideas?

Re: [Qgis-user] Hachure construction

2014-04-20 Thread maning sambale
Another approach would be from a DEM, generate slope and aspect. Add
the values to a point vector layer and follow Imhof's rules.

I made a similar experiment many moons ago. Check the last two photos
in this post:
http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/alternatives-to-relief-shading/

The arrows depicts the direction of the surface (aspect) while the
line thickness depicts the steepness of the gradient (slope).

On Fri, Apr 18, 2014 at 3:36 PM, Frank Broniewski b...@metrico.lu wrote:
 Hi,

I am working with contours that I have available. Using the snapping
options I can already draw lines between two contour lines just fine,
but a hachure line is usually drawn in the direction of the steepest
slope. So it would be useful to have a length indicator, just like with
the measurement tool, when digitizing lines. Because the shortest
distance between two points would represent the steepest slope and that
is what I want to know.

So how can I get the current line length while digitizing? Is there some
plugin? I am also not afraid of using Python to achieve this, but I've
never done any QGIS modding so far ...

 Many thanks,

 Frank

Re: [Qgis-user] Batch contour extract

2014-03-13 Thread maning sambale
Dear Leandro,

Two steps I do:
1. Create a vrt of all the DEM files (gdalbuildvrt).
2. Extract contour from the VRT file (gdal_contour).

Both tools are available in the Raster menu.
You can also script this and run the process for each DEM file but you
will have separate contour layers that stops at the edge of your DEM
tile. I want to avoid this which I why I use the VRT file.

A CLI version of this process I posted here:

Re: [Qgis-user] Dashed lines with adjacent polygons

2013-02-14 Thread maning sambale
A solution I use is with the New Symbology, I create two lines for the
polygon (Outline: Simple Line).
The first line on top is the dashed line. The second line below is
white solid line or any background color with the same thickness or
larger than the dashed line on top (similar to a halo/buffer effect on
texts).
The white will cover the first overlapping polygon and will only show
the polygon on top.

 Hi !

Is there a way to make dashed line between two polygons display well ?
(typical use scenario : boundary between countries)

Since there are two superposed lines, the line sometimes appear dashed,
sometimes solid, sometimes dashed but not with the right pattern...

Of course, one could use a line layer to draw this, but then it's more
 complex to maintain.

The same problem appears for transparent lines.

 Any ideas ?

 Thanks !!

[Qgis-user] status of Chinese QGIS

2012-09-26 Thread maning sambale
Dear users and devs,

Just sharing an experience of teaching a Chinese colleague in the use
of QGIS. Overall the experience was very good but much improvement is
still needed to accommodate Chinese users.

A few notes:
 - Many parts of the GUI (menu names, icon labels and tool tips) do
not have a Chinese translation.
 - When creating a new vector layer, there are no option to select an
encoding. It defaults to UTF-8. We were able to add new geometries
but when adding attribute strings using Chinese characters, it doesn't
recognize the entry. Creating a cpg file doesn't help either. Perhaps
related to ticket# 5255 [0]
 - gdalbuildvrt doesn't recognize Chinese directory path ticket# 6412 [1]

Apologies if I can't provide a detailed report on each item, I have
difficulty debugging the Chinese machine. :) Finally, I appeal to
Chinese users here to help in the GUI translation.

Thanks! QGIS is always awesome!

For creating hillshades/relief in a Lat/Lon CRS, the option for:
 - Terrain plugin is to use a Z-factor=20
 - GdalTools DEM is to use Scale (ratio of vert units to horiz.)=20

More so GdalTools DEM is also using Z-Factor for vertical exaggeration.

This is very confusing for newbies.

[Qgis-user] gdaldem plugin versus raster terrain modelling plugin

2012-04-26 Thread maning sambale
Currently we have two terrain analysis plugin, one for as a core
plugin (Raster Terrain Modelling) and the other in GdalTools
(gdaldem).

The Raster Terrain Modelling has 4 analysis algorithm (slope, aspect,
ruggedness, total curvature) and has simpler UI (analysis type, input,
output, output format). On the other hand, gdaltools' dem analysis
has more algorithms (hillshade, slope, aspect, color-relief, TRI, TPI,
roughness) and parameter switches (i.e. for Slope, scale factor).

I tested the generation of both plugin on the same DEM and I got
different results. Visually inspecting the map, the results looks
very similar. But the data stats while not very divergent, are
different, see below.

$ gdalinfo -hist slope_terrainplugin.tif
snip
  Metadata:
STATISTICS_MAXIMUM=88.384605407715
STATISTICS_MEAN=10.562942081774
STATISTICS_MINIMUM=0
STATISTICS_STDDEV=10.476060265591

$ gdalinfo -hist slope_gdalplugin.tif
snip
  Metadata:
STATISTICS_MAXIMUM=87.754096984863
STATISTICS_MEAN=10.702959382095
STATISTICS_MINIMUM=0
STATISTICS_STDDEV=10.367163780773

I'm asking here for experience of people in using the two plugins,
which of the two has better results in your analysis? FWIW, you can
also include GRASS' r.slope.aspect in the comparison.

This time, we are providing GIS courses to Masters students. I

are mostly local government personnel in remote towns.

First run of the course for basics of GIS was conducted last week.
Everything went very well and even those who have prior experience to
using proprietary GIS are impressed with the ease-of-use and
functionality of QGIS.

It is customary for me to document the experience of the students and
report them to QGIS in this list. No crash this time just minor bugs.

Below are the filed tickets (bugs and enhancement):

[Qgis-user] image rendering degradation when using overviews

2012-02-02 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

I have a set of digital paper maps. See this example for original
jpeg maps [0]. Now the original maps are not really very nice anyway
when rectified because of the polygon hatched styling.

I then combined all the maps using both VRT [1] and one big GTiff [2].
The rendering quality is just as bad especially when zooming to full
extent.

When I added external overviews using the Raster Build Overview
tool, the overviews are much worst when zoomed to full extent both in
the VRT [3] and GTiff [4]

Any idea why?
I think the best option eventually is to digitize (by hand since its
hard to automaticaly extract polygons due to the hatching) rather than
using the images as underlay. I'm puzzled by the bad result of the
overview rendering.

Using QGIS 1.7, GDAL 1.8

 Hi,

Postgis SVN (2.0) has a function called ST_ConcaveHull
 (http://www.postgis.org/documentation/manual-svn/ST_ConcaveHull.html) - it
says it builds upon GEOS - (but probably only in geos-svn) - so there should
be some way to expose it in a future QGIS version.

 See also this thread:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/postgis-users@postgis.refractions.net/msg10785.html

 and Regina's examples:
 http://www.bostongis.com/postgis_concavehull.snippet

I currently can't find the GEOS class/method that calculates it, but since
Postgis makes a reference to GEOS it has to be somewhere in GEOS.

If you want to speed up the process, you can perhaps pay a developer to
 include it.

[Qgis-user] pre-formatting KML output in QGIS or other options

2012-01-08 Thread maning sambale
Not entirely a QGIS question but closely related. I have a data layer
that is regularly updated in QGIS. This layer will then be converted
to KML as an overlay in a static webmap (google or openlayers).
Importing to KML is straightforward in QGIS. (Select Layer,
righy-click Save as). However, I want to pre-format the styling of
the KML to:

1. Change KML styling (fill and outline) according to a specified
attribute column in the data.
2. Change display formatting of popup box. I.e. a column for the
popup box name. Other attributes as hyperlinks, bullet points and
image links.

There was a C+ plugin before that do the styling [0]. Is it updated
for qgis 1.7 as a python plugin? Maybe others have some text munging
scripts to edit the kml, care to share?

[Qgis-user] increase decimal precision in the georeferencer GCP table

2011-12-13 Thread maning sambale
I'm not sure if this has been reported so checking first in the
mailinglist before filing a ticket.

I'm using QGIS 1.7.0 Georeferencer plugin. The GCP table shows only 2
decimal places of the ground control points (see image [0]). I tried
increasing the precision in the Project Properties General but the
setting is not recognized by the Georeferencer plugin. My SRS is
lat/lon WGS84.

I've checked the saved GCP file and the coordinates are indeed more
than 2 decimal places ( I think it was 15) so I think the issue is
only on the shown GCP table. Therefore, I assume that georeferencer
is using those coordinates instead of what is shown in the window
table.

Would it be possible to increase the precision shown in the GCP table
by at least 5-6 decimal places?

OSSIM can do it, see page 9 in this document

I am not sure how good OSSIM is with vector layers. OSSIM itself is getting

However, it will not hurt to have a look at OSSIM if you want to do some

Any specific usability improvements, tool or plugin that should be

Description
Some postgis db can be very big and I want to extract only selected
features for offline editing. A nice feature would be to:

use the map canvass
an interactive bbox query
selected features only download

Re: [Qgis-user] Offline Editing combined with PgVersion

2011-07-22 Thread maning sambale
Dear Horst,

I noticed you published pg_version 0.9 and gave it a run. The process are:

1. Connect to the postgis db and load a layer (i.e. pg_layer ).
2. Prepare the loaded layer for versioning. This creates a new layer
(i.e. pg_layer_version)
3. Convert the pg_layer_version to offline spatialite db
(pg_layer_version(offline))
4. Edit the offline version.
6. Connect to the pg db.
7. Synchronize the offline spatialite. The changes are merged into
the pg_layer_version.
8. Commit changes from the pg_layer_version to the main pg_layer.

Is this the correct workflow? I managed to test a few commits and it
seems to work.

A few observations I noticed:
1. Synchronizing the offline spatiallite db to the pg_layer_version
takes considerable time even if I simply edited a single vertex and
attribute. (PG is on the same machine).
2. After creating and editing the offline spatialite, I closed QGIS.
I opened again and tried editing. I cannot synchronize anymore. I'm
sure my current session is connected to the pg db. Perhaps a bug in
the spatialite plugin losing the connection to pg.

I haven't worked out how to revert but the initial implementation is
looking good. Very similar to git's clone/fork-edit-stage
commits-push to remote. :) Will test some more and provide feedback.

This is using qgis 1.7 on Ubuntu 11.04.

pgversion in the last week. In my opinion it is very easy to combine these
two features. You only have to load a versioned layer. Than prepare this
layer for offline editing. After finishing your edits you syncronise the
offline editings with the versioned layer. Now you can commit your editings
to the main repository. Thats all. The only issue is at the moment, that the
versioned layer is not marked as modified. But this will be solvable.

In the afternoon I will publish a new version 0.9.0 of pgversion with the
 option to display commit logs.

[Qgis-user] closing an offline spatialite does not connect to the remote db.

2011-07-22 Thread maning sambale
Related to my test with pg-version and offline spatialite.

I can confirm that when creating an offline spatialite then editing
and closing the qgis session, then opening the same db in another
session, I cannot sync anymore to the remote pg db.

I am not using the pg_version this time just a regular pg dbase and
the offline editing plugin.

 wrong, it was implemented yet.
You can find it in GdalTools plugin since QGis 1.7, run Raster - GdalDem.
You should be able to run it in QGis 1.7, just enable experimental plugins
 and update your GdalTools plugin.

 Cheers

I personally feel quite uncomfortable and experiment performance
issues working with large rasters so this is what I do:

 - Keep my raster files small. I get almost all my DEMs from a WCS in
1000x1000 px tiles and convert them to 16 bit integers (they are 32
bits float originally but no DEM has so much precision).

 - Generate seperate hillshades for each DEM. The shaded relief plugin
is very convenient and has the advantage of generating 128 bit
 rasters.

 - Avoid loading lots of rasters in a qgis project. Better combine them
using VRT. I use it to combine dozens of DEMs when I need to cover
larger regions in a single project with very good results.

[Qgis-user] basic spatialite questions

2011-06-03 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

I'm trying out the spatialite in QGIS as an alternative to shapefiles.
According to what I've read so far, spatialite is better than
shapefile as an offline-portable-single db storage format. At the
moment I was able to load some spatialite layers in QGIS, do basic
queries using the layer Query and perform offline edits and
synchronize.

A couple of questions (I can't find it the qgis 1.6 manual):
1. You can create a new db and create a new layer, but you can't load
an existing shapefile in an existing db? To do this, I used the
spatialite-gui.
2. To execute the usual SQLs, you need to use plugins (such as
Spatialite Manager, Qspatialite, RT SQL layer)? Only simple table
queries are possible with the Query Builder and Field Caculator.
3. Spatialite Manager, Qspatialite, RT SQL layer requires the
pyspatialite module which you need to compile from source. No `python
easy_install pyspatialite` ?
4. Cannot do Layer Save as Spatialite?
5. Limited integration with other core QGIS plugin like Ftools?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [Qgis-user] 1-band raster plugin and grass r.colors

2011-05-19 Thread maning sambale
Thanks for the info. So far, the grass rules I often used are
included. I'll dig deeper into how to create palettes and hope this
will be included in later versions.

 Hi Maning,

 Short answer: No.

I've only included a few default rules from Grass.

Note that 1-band raster colour plugin is based on colour palette files
(one file per palette), and, AFAIK, Grass colour palette is rule based (this
means the colour palette is created on the go, when the user needs it).

Also note that you can add your own palettes, see [1] for explanations on
 how to do it.
If you do so, could you please email me the palette so that I can add it
 to the plugin distro.

Any suggestions for a reliable WMS I can use demos? The NASA JPL wms

Re: [Qgis-user] Re: Remove red vertex markers from a line layer

2011-05-06 Thread maning sambale
The red x-shaped vertex markers are visible if your line vector is in
edit mode. Disabling the edit mode `select layer right-click
toggle editing`, will remove the markers.

When you closed and reloaded the QGIS session, the default setting of
vector is not in edit mode. This is the reason why the markers
disappeared

 Hi,

I apologise in advance if you have received this email more than once
because you are listed on two or more mail lists.

I would like to announce the launch of a new website called
http://www.fossworkflowguides.com that may be of interest to you.

The site's aim is to provide detailed workflow guides using free and
 open source software.

The target audience is beginners to intermediate users.

The ultimate aim is to get more people using foss in their businesses.

These are not manuals but rather guides on how to get complex tasks
sequences or workflows completed using free and open source software.

The website is the main medium by which information is being disseminated.

That said, PDF files have also been provided that can be downloaded and
referred to when the Internet is not available.

Of particular note for this group is the 'fosGIS Workflow Guide - A
guide to the use of FOSS to view, edit, create, analyse and map
geospatial data (http://gis.fossworkflowguides.com)', although if you
look at the main page you will see I also intent to publish tutorials on
use of bash and python (http://scripting.fossworkflowguides.com). Other
guides are planned but will depend on how enthusiastically the currently
published and proposed tutorials are received.

An initial instalment of tutorials have been posted along with copious
 support documentation and CC-BY-SA Data.

I welcome any feedback. You can post back to this mail list (if you want
to have a debate) or use the feedback form on the website
http://www.fossworkflowguides.com/#feedback, if you want to just point
out a typo or suggest a topic for a tutorial.

The current list of tutorials are...
 - Installing gvSIG 1.10 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
 - Installing gvSIG 1.10 on Windows XP
 - The basic configuration of gvSIG for normal use
 - Datums and Coordinate Systems used in South-eastern Australia
 - How gvSIG handles Coordinate Reference Systems

If you want to be informed of the publication of other tutorials in the
future register for email alerts at
 http://www.fossworkflowguides.com/#alerts.

Re: [Qgis-user] Re: ArcInfo gdb file system

2011-04-24 Thread maning sambale
Dear Tom,

By gdb, I suppose you mean Garmin's GDB format:
http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_gdb.html

QGIS can display gps data using the GPX format, you can convert the
gdb file into GPX format using the GPS Tools plugin. The conversion
from other format to GPX is under the Import other tab. After the
import, you can view the GPX files using the same plugin under the
Load GPX tab.

If you need more power with transforming your gdb files to other GPS
formats, I suggest you try GPSBabel.

[Qgis-user] advice on a geotagging app

2011-04-20 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

For geotagging photos, I use JOSM (OSM's java editor). JOSM has a
nifty plugin that writes lat/lon into the photo's exif. Afterwards, I
use QGIS's phot2shape to create a point shapefile. The resulting
shapfile is then used for the evis plugin to show photos in QGIS. I
was wondering if there are other tools to do this. A qgis plugin or
other free (easy to use) tools.

There is also EasyGeoTagger
(http://biodiversityinformatics.amnh.org/open_source/easygeotagger/index.php)
but it requires a bit of dependency installs and development is
currently inactive.

Advance thank you.

Re: [Qgis-user] styling a KML/KMZ file using QGIS?

You can use the qgis2google plugin, but I don't think it can extrude
polygons as shown in the link you provided.

http://gis-lab.info/qa/qgis2google-eng.html

You need to compile from source if you use linux or mac.

I was wondering if QGIS (or any plugins) allow you to style a layer

the layer symbolized the same way that it looked in QGIS.  Whenever I export
to KML and load into Google Earth, I only get the online boundaries in a
 single color.

Example, unique colors of US States where each state is a different color.
It looks like the Shape2KML tool does this, but I'm wondering if this type
of function has been implemented in QGIS.  See examples here for a better
 visual:
