[Qgis-user] HowTo: Dynamic legend from min/max of filtered values
Hi, I have a polygon of villages with a certain index value. I want to create an atlas for each municipality composed of several villages where the symbology would be the range of index values filtered by municipality. I'm looking for ways to dynamically symbolize the index value of the village polygons. For example, one municipality would have an index of 1-30, I will symbolize using an equal count of 5 classes taking into account the min and max range of the index values. Another municipality would have a different range (i.e. 20-40) so the symbolizer should take into account the different range and classify them accordingly. [Qgis-user] Collecting ideas for adding data dependent charts/plots in map composer
Hi, I'm trying to brainstorm how to integrate charts within map composer. This is different from the layer based diagrams currently available in QGIS layers. What I want is to be able to display charts within map composer for example, a pie chart (ugh!) of my landcover categories or a histogram of my raster values, etc. Right now, what I do in map composer are: 1. create a chart in a separate program and embed as image 2. create a html chart for example with D3 and add it as file using the HTML frame or directly paste the html in the label box rendered as html. Some plugins (i.e. profile tool) have integrated chart plots already. I wonder how we can integrate this into the map composer. Ideally, what I want is to prepare the charts all within QGIS map composer that is able to interact with my layer attributes (i.e. display summary chart). Searching the web for plotting APIs I saw the following: 1. many html/js based implmentations like google chart and D3 2. matplotlib for python 3. Qt plotting widgets Maybe others here have implemented such approach? Re: [Qgis-user] Hachure construction
Another approach would be from a DEM, generate slope and aspect. Add the values to a point vector layer and follow Imhof's rules. I made a similar experiment many moons ago. Check the last two photos in this post: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/alternatives-to-relief-shading/ The arrows depicts the direction of the surface (aspect) while the line thickness depicts the steepness of the gradient (slope). Using the snapping options I can already draw lines between two contour lines just fine, but a hachure line is usually drawn in the direction of the steepest slope. So it would be useful to have a length indicator, just like with the measurement tool, when digitizing lines. Because the shortest distance between two points would represent the steepest slope and that is what I want to know. So how can I get the current line length while digitizing? Is there some plugin? Dear Leandro, Two steps I do: 1. Create a vrt of all the DEM files (gdalbuildvrt). 2. Extract contour from the VRT file (gdal_contour). Both tools are available in the Raster menu. You can also script this and run the process for each DEM file but you will have separate contour layers that stops at the edge of your DEM tile. I want to avoid this which I why I use the VRT file. Re: [Qgis-user] Dashed lines with adjacent polygons
A solution I use is with the New Symbology, I create two lines for the polygon (Outline: Simple Line). The first line on top is the dashed line. The second line below is white solid line or any background color with the same thickness or larger than the dashed line on top (similar to a halo/buffer effect on texts). The white will cover the first overlapping polygon and will only show the polygon on top. Dear users and devs, Just sharing an experience of teaching a Chinese colleague in the use of QGIS. [Qgis-user] image rendering degradation when using overviews
Hi, I have a set of digital paper maps. See this example for original jpeg maps [0]. Now the original maps are not really very nice anyway when rectified because of the polygon hatched styling. I then combined all the maps using both VRT [1] and one big GTiff [2]. The rendering quality is just as bad especially when zooming to full extent. When I added external overviews using the Raster Build Overview tool, the overviews are much worst when zoomed to full extent both in the VRT [3] and GTiff [4] Any idea why? I think the best option eventually is to digitize (by hand since its hard to automaticaly extract polygons due to the hatching) rather than using the images as underlay. [Qgis-user] what's new with 1.7 release for user
Dear all, I will conduct a follow-up visit to some of our students next week. Most of them are using Qgis 1.4 and 1.6 and I would like to introduce them them to the QGIS 1.7. I'm using the 1.7 release announcement [0] as a basis for showing what's new. I am happily using 1.7 as well but perhaps others can give me tips on what I should highlight (apart from what was mentioned in the changelog) based on your experience. Re: [Qgis-user] Offline Editing combined with PgVersion
Dear Horst, I noticed you published pg_version 0.9 and gave it a run. The process are: 1. Connect to the postgis db and load a layer (i.e. pg_layer ). 2. Prepare the loaded layer for versioning. This creates a new layer (i.e. pg_layer_version) 3. Convert the pg_layer_version to offline spatialite db (pg_layer_version(offline)) 4. Edit the offline version. 6. Connect to the pg db. 7. Synchronize the offline spatialite. The changes are merged into the pg_layer_version. 8. Commit changes from the pg_layer_version to the main pg_layer. Is this the correct workflow? I managed to test a few commits and it seems to work. A few observations I noticed: 1. Synchronizing the offline spatiallite db to the pg_layer_version takes considerable time even if I simply edited a single vertex and attribute. (PG is on the same machine). 2. After creating and editing the offline spatialite, I closed QGIS. I opened again and tried editing. I cannot synchronize anymore. I'm sure my current session is connected to the pg db. Perhaps a bug in the spatialite plugin losing the connection to pg. I haven't worked out how to revert but the initial implementation is looking good. Very similar to git's clone/fork-edit-stage commits-push to remote. :) Will test some more and provide feedback. This is using qgis 1.7 on Ubuntu 11.04. On Thu, Jul 21, 2011 at 5:37 PM, Horst Düster horst.dues...@kappasys.ch wrote: Hi I followed the discussion about the combination of offline editing and pgversion in the last week. In my opinion it is very easy to combine these two features. You only have to load a versioned layer. Than prepare this layer for offline editing. After finishing your edits you syncronise the offline editings with the versioned layer. Now you can commit your editings to the main repository. Thats all. The only issue is at the moment, that the versioned layer is not marked as modified. But this will be solvable. [Qgis-user] basic spatialite questions
Hi, I'm trying out the spatialite in QGIS as an alternative to shapefiles. According to what I've read so far, spatialite is better than shapefile as an offline-portable-single db storage format. At the moment I was able to load some spatialite layers in QGIS, do basic queries using the layer Query and perform offline edits and synchronize. A couple of questions (I can't find it the qgis 1.6 manual): 1. You can create a new db and create a new layer, but you can't load an existing shapefile in an existing db? To do this, I used the spatialite-gui. 2. To execute the usual SQLs, you need to use plugins (such as Spatialite Manager, Qspatialite, RT SQL layer)? Only simple table queries are possible with the Query Builder and Field Caculator. 3. Thanks for the info. So far, the grass rules I often used are included. I'll dig deeper into how to create palettes and hope this will be included in later versions. Hi Maning, Short answer: No. I've only included a few default rules from Grass. Note that 1-band raster colour plugin is based on colour palette files (one file per palette), and, AFAIK, Grass colour palette is rule based (this means the colour palette is created on the go, when the user needs it). Also note that you can add your own palettes, see [1] for explanations on how to do it. If you do so, could you please email me the palette so that I can add it to the plugin distro. I would like to announce the launch of a new website called http://www.fossworkflowguides.com that may be of interest to you. The site's aim is to provide detailed workflow guides using free and open source software. The target audience is beginners to intermediate users. The ultimate aim is to get more people using foss in their businesses. These are not manuals but rather guides on how to get complex tasks sequences or workflows completed using free and open source software. The website is the main medium by which information is being disseminated. That said, PDF files have also been provided that can be downloaded and referred to when the Internet is not available. Of particular note for this group is the 'fosGIS Workflow Guide - A guide to the use of FOSS to view, edit, create, analyse and map geospatial data (http://gis.fossworkflowguides.com)', although if you look at the main page you will see I also intent to publish tutorials on use of bash and python (http://scripting.fossworkflowguides.com). Other guides are planned but will depend on how enthusiastically the currently published and proposed tutorials are received. An initial instalment of tutorials have been posted along with copious support documentation and CC-BY-SA Data. I welcome any feedback. You can post back to this mail list (if you want to have a debate) or use the feedback form on the website http://www.fossworkflowguides.com/#feedback, if you want to just point out a typo or suggest a topic for a tutorial.
