[Ql-Users] QL on a stick

2007-10-07 Thread gwicks
Dilwyn has kindly provided QL Today with a review copy of a QL on a stick.

This is just the CD which you have to copy to your own USB memory stick.

Would anyone be interested in doing a review for QL Today?

Ideally we would like to publish in issue 2, which has a deadline of 15th
November,

Best wishes,

Geoff

Re: [Ql-Users] Punters

2007-10-07 Thread John Gilpin
It isn't very often that Quanta agrees with Geoff Wicks but the definitions
in my Dictionary for the word punter includes the following:

'a person who gambles or lays a bet; a customer or client, a member of an
audience; a participant in any activity' none of which are in any way
derogatory. I can also offer the following words as having similar meaning:

'better, gamester, player, spectator, customer, buyer, shopper, client,
patron, chap, person, individual, man (or woman) in the street. (Colloq -
guy, Slang - geezer, bloke)'

I would agree, Geoff that punter would describe the attendees of the event
this weekend quite well.. (I admit that there may be other meanings of the
word which have less polite meanings but if each word had to be analyzed
before we used it in case we caused offence, we would probably stop speaking
completely!!) - Its probably Just Words

Great workshop and nice to see so many people there. See you all at the
next one?

Regards,

John Gilpin.

It isn't very often that Quanta agrees with Geoff Wicks:

Is this a subtle Quanta plot to destroy my reputation?

Actually I am not being facetious about the use of the word punter. I wote
in a light-hearted way, but I think the person concerned is making a fair
point, and we should be sensitive to it.

The problem is I cannot think of a suitable alternative that also conveys
the sort of atmosphere we have at shows,

Frank and I used to call them, the general public, as a distinction for
those who were on the 'other side of the tables' :-)

For once we too were among the mingling masses jostling elbows side by
side with the eager horde gazing and lusting for goods and services to
feed our newly discovered computing interests.

2007-10-07 Thread Dilwyn Jones
I just downloaded this update (I am a registered QL2K user). It seems
to work OK on Windows XP. I like the fact that you can just set its
speed as a multiple of QL speed in the startup menu (playing a fast
game, set this to 1 to make it run at normal speed, want QL2K to run
faster than a standard QL, set it to a higher value) rather than
having to work out the speed value like you had to in QLay or QLay2.

I haven't played much with it yet but it looks quite promising!

 Hi all,

I just post on my website a new patch for QL2K
 (http://www.jadiam.org/QL).
Well I want to say more on this email but all I should say is on the
 website now.
Just note that I will make a new setup program after users testing.

Here is a small tips too :

When the emulation is running you can access to QL configuration dialog box
(using menu QL / Configuration) and made changes in live of the Clock multiplier
to set your QL quicker or slower.

Actually what's wrong with QLer, QL enthusiast, QL Hobbyist, QL supporter,
QList, QLuser, QL individualist.
The editor of QLToday might be contempating a competition to discover the
correct terms for a single QL user or an pack of them, like a pride of Lions
etc, - like a QLutch of Qlers.

Clearly punter is a cliched descriptor which may be applied to an individual
who is expected to part whith hard cash during an event of any sort and is
therefore totally inadequate to adequately describe the quality of the
individualists who continue to support QL systems.

In that case you have to be sensitive to everything some half cocked

The problem is I cannot think of a suitable alternative that also conveys

I had no idea that the work punter was slightly offensive, nor that it
would be used to refer to attendees. When I hear the the term, I just
think about the position in American Football.

Now, to punt has common usage, meaning to pass one to someone else.
