Hi Wolfgang. Yes, forced. I do not like to travel I'm afraid. I find the
whole thing very frustrating - hanging around in airports, railway
stations, bus stations etc just winds me up !

My wife, on the other hand, finds it all very pleasant. She used to be a
travel agent, hence the addiction to travel.

I loathe it ! However, once the travelling is done with and I have
reached some foreign shore, I usually enjoy it. At least, until it's
time to travel again.

I -know- he was joking.
Mind you , if not, I would happily volunteer to suffer for him (8-)#
I have never been to Florence.

Hi Tony,

I wasn't joking !
I've never been to Florence either - but I will be going there, and Pisa
to see the tower - which I believe thay have recently added a new clock
to the tower. This is so that tourists can get the time and the
inclination :o) groan

See you all when I get back.

First of all, apologies to those who wrote in requesting my bits of free
kit. I have not forgotten you. I've been incredibly busy (honest) with
work and somewhat delayed in getting sorted out with who gets what.

If you can bear with me for a while, I'm being forced to visit Tuscany
for a fortnight, then I promise to sort things out when I get back.

Thanks.

We do include humour in QL Today from time to time, but try to make sure
it's QL-related even if only indirectly. Roy does include his own little bits
(I think there was one about films I personally might have been in or something
in one Bytes of Wood) but personally, I'd like to have some form of connection
to the QL even if only indirectly. People subscribe to QL Today because it
contains QL stuff, but can see that some might like lighter stuff as well if of
interest to QLers without being directly relevant. I'd happily go with the flow
on this one I think.
I wasn't referring to humour, at least, I hadn't thought about it as
such. I was thinking more along the lines of articles of a general
computing nature.

For a possible example, I sometimes work with manuals, instructions
whatever in DocBook format. Once written in this (specialised) XML
format, a file can then be converted into an HTML document in many
'pages' (one per section) or into a single HTML document with everything
in it, or to PDF format etc. The is done using XSLT which are templates
that are applied to the source file and they produce the output format
of choice either directly or indirectly.

As an article, I would only give an introduction to DocBook, a few small
examples and point the reader in the general direction of a few Web
sites for further information. As for XSLT and so on, I don't even know
where to begin with that piece of Voodoo - it's well beyond me and my
abilities.

One potential (and planned) use of DocBook is to convert my QDOS
Internals web site (still unfinished) into DocBook and get the benefits
of generating the HTML for the Web, plus downloadable files in the three
different formats. And so on.

While we don't (yet) have anything remotely like this for the QL, who
knows - the very thought of it might spur someone with the talent to do
the job, on to actually doing it.

Cheers,
Norman.

They were send by a Computer Programmer/ Oracle DBA - does that count ?
We could have an irregular 'off topic' column in which articles of

it does in QL coding.

So with him, fast might be appropriate.

Morning Jim,
I once was having a 'lunchtime rant' in the canteen at work over the new
'improved' Oracle installer which had just been rewritten
(re-architected as they put it - g) in Java from C. It was so slow
that even the main splash screen had it's own screen to show that the
splash screen was loading. Nice.

Things have improved a little since then, but java stuff is still slow.
My ranting was overheard by the so called 'technical director' who
advised me that Java was indeed as fast as C. This was and is total
b*ll*x as Java is interpreted byte code while C is compiled into machine
code. He was not to be deterred and informed me that he had already
implemented two systems, with over 1,500 users each, written in Java and
it was fast.

I was then astonished when he admitted that Java is slow if it has to
deviate from the 'normal' path through the code. I asked if this
included hanling errors and he replied that it did. The upshot was, in
his two systems there is no error handling and only the 'one true path'
through the code is allowed.

I'd hate to have paid for those systems !
He's no longer the technical director - he didn't have any technical
knowlege at all.

I'm no longer the Oracle DBA there either - I work for myself now. :o)
Cheers,
Norman.
