You need also to disconnect a diode and a resistor, and add a wire link, otherwise the 
backup clock will not work.

describing these modifications. Please let me know.

Mplane does, so I assume it is OK?

These components are located on Gold Card's PCB. 

I assume this is because Qplane does not link all the expansion socket

I don't know Mplane's details, whatever these modifications are required for getting 
GC fully working at 5 Volt regardles of expansion type socket's you use. Remember to 
bridge 7805 regulator.
