Yes, you're missing something!! :-) We where talking of getting a mounded
case made in the shape of a QL. Could be done, but for 100 or so units,
would cost the earth.

The sticky label idea wouldn't work - they'd wear off in about 5 mins of
throwing them about, and the stick is not square, its tapered and slightly
rounded at the ends - a label would crease and look awful.

We can print directly onto the stick, the same way promotional pens and
keyrings are done, and it looks great. But it's a minimum order of 100.
I reckon that a QL printed on the stick is a lot better than nothing at
all. How about a white stick, with a black QL printed on as large as is
feasible. The lettering of the keys (and the "Sinclair" and "QL")
would simply be the white case plastic showing through.

Am I missing something here, or could Darren just get some transparent
sticky labels (e.g. from Avery) and laser print a QL picture or
something onto them and wrap it around the body of the QL Stick?

Yep. Tooling costs the earth. And, with a lot of companies we work for, the
tooling plans are either sold to them, or destroyed, so that further ones
cant be made, should the company have wished a "limited edition" of whatever
device they commissioned.

I'm asked one of the guys in the know to look at the back catalogue to see
if we have a regtangular case there, but I doubt it. Even if we did, you'd
probably find the rights to it don't belong to us anymore, but to the
company that asked for it.

Ho Hum

Exactly. The tooling cost of the real QL case was, I think, £30,000 in
the 80s.

Mind you if there is tooling for a rectangular case, then that might be
cost effective. Isn't the tooling the really expensive bit?

That would be lovely, a real 3D shaped USB Stick with the
microdrives being

the USB plug cover cap.

I can probably get those purpose made, but at a 100 print run,
expect to pay

about 2,000 quid each at least!!

It really is not sensible to think along such commercial lines. I can
envisage a much more economical solution. I would need to have an example
of the stick and as I no longer posses a BlackBox , a pic of the top and
dimensions for proportion.

That is the sort of thing, but are users willing to pay more for the
packaging that the product? A special moulding would be expensive to
tool.

I investigated a case for RomDisq, but it was not affordable in small
quantities. Tooling cost was too high. ... and then we were talking
hundreds.

I think the best we can hope for is a printed QL image.
If it is large enough, then it might look like a QL with rounded edges.

I liked it too.

None left, the entire shipment sent to the US not long after I joined here.

The MD has one - and I think he is guarding it with his life!!

They don't happen that often, as they are expensive to do. They did one in
the shape of a cruise ship a year or two ago.

Cheers,

Darren.
