vacation does not reply to sender

Hi!

using Peter Samuel's vacation program my 
.qmail file has to look like

|/var/qmail/bin/preline /usr/local/bin/vacation john
./Maildir/

to get the reply to the sender. 
BUT using "preline" is no good (I/O Buffers.....)


When my .qmail looks like

|/usr/local/bin/vacation john
./Maildir

the user gets mail but the sender *no* vacation message



Any ideas?
