Re: [qmailtoaster] Very strange and huge problem with port 25 and Qmailtoaster

2010-07-22 Thread Digital Instruments

The funny thing is that i haven't change nothing at all.
Is it possible i have been blacklisted on port 25 by zen spamhouse?

Also another problem happened yesterday, in the noon, we could not
recieve e-mail from pop3 and ppl who recieved them were delayed by 30
minutes.

Nothing special on logs the only strange thing i can see is in
/var/log/qmail/smtp, this line:
vchkpw-smtp: vchkpw is only for talking with qmail-popup and
qmail-pop3d. It is not for runnning on the command line.

Telnet port 25 today gives:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 server1.isocast.it - Welcome to Qmail Toaster Ver. 1.3 SMTP Server ESMTP

Yesterday was giving both on localhost and remote the same messages
given to you.

So.. i can't really understand what's going on...

I think something is blocking port 25 cause from IMAP i can send e-mail.

Can anyone help me, please? I need to have this port 25 working back.

IMAP does not send email. You can only send email on ports 25 and 587
with a stock Qmailtoaster.
You have something going on - when telnetting to port 25, I do not
receive a welcome banner:

[j...@jake-lapbox ~]$ time telnet mail.digital-instruments.com 25

Trying 79.14.157.43...
Connected to mail.digital-instruments.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

sys0m0.004s

But without more information it's almost impossible to even guess at
what the problem may be.
What recently changed? Can you show us logs? What do you get when you
telnet to port 25 at the localhost? Is there something in the network
that may be intercepting this traffic?

RE: [qmailtoaster] Very strange and huge problem with port 25 and Qmailtoaster

2010-07-22 Thread Mike Canty
If it is any consolation, we have a site where the ISP has blocked port 25
traffic to any other point except their own outgoing mail server. This was
noticed recently because the site is currently using mail hosted externally,
and I have tried to install a qmail toaster machine and came across the
block.

Could this be an ISP thing?

Re: [qmailtoaster] Very strange and huge problem with port 25 and Qmailtoaster

2010-07-22 Thread Digital Instruments

Update:

removing the following line from var/qmail/supervise/smtp/run let the
port 25 works (that's means it works from telnet localhost and remote)
BLACKLIST=`cat /var/qmail/control/blacklists`
$BLACKLIST

so the exec command it's the same but without the $BLACKLIST.
Inside the /var/qmail/control/blacklists there's only this line: -r
zen.spamhaus.org -r

disabling spamd from /var/qmail/control/simcontrol let the port 110 works.
:spam=no,

NOTE: it takes 2/3 minutes to deliver a message from an external e-mail
(gmail like) to our server. Is it normal time?

Re: [qmailtoaster] Very strange and huge problem with port 25 and Qmailtoaster

2010-07-22 Thread Digital Instruments

It's quite strange cause I had never had a vpopmail.user table. Also checking
my vpopmail dump of 3 months ago and later there's no 'user' table in vpopmail
db. So i don't know where this error comes from.

About your previous question:

/proc/loadavg
0.01 0.02 0.00 1/219 5009
this is after i've temporary disabled clamd and spamd with svc -d.

named works fine also reverse. Average query time is 42 millisec for
diggin google/yahoo etc..

no i haven't any delay from localhost it's istant.

[qmailtoaster] Limiting number of open files

2010-07-22 Thread Natalio Gatti
Hello List. I'm having a problem in a fresh install of qmail-toaster
over Centos 5.4
I'm using qmail-toaster on a VPS (Virtual Private Server). The server
function as a mail server for 2 mail accounts with normal traffic,
using imap.
The VPS limit the number of open files to 6000. Without qmail-toaster
running, the server has 1000-1500 files open, and when I start
qmail-toaster it jumps to 6000 reaching the max limit and generating
errors. Is it a normal behaviour? Is there a way to control the opened
files?
Thanks,
Natalio.

IMHO no way. Many open files are shared libraries. On my server now are
open 9276 files. On this server works:
- QMT
- apache with Typo3
- ejabberd
- VPN's
- samba
- and some other standard daemons.

Most of my log analysis and research took place on the 19th, I've been
interrupted several times while trying to get this email off.

A client's been trying to send messages to one of our salespeople since
the 15th of July. I can see in the Spamdyke logs several instances per
day, from the 15th to the 19th, of messages coming in from this client
and passing Spamdyke tests.

Here's /var/log/qmail/smtp log entries for a message that did not get
through, slightly sanitized:

There's a tcpserver: status: X/100 entry and a simscan:[PID2]:CLEAN
entry. Also, the message came in from a different gmail server:
mail-yw0-f44.google.com.

I've been researching undesired interactions between gmail and spamdyke
or standard components of qmailtoaster, but I haven't found anything
noteworthy.

The client was getting a status message, generated by his mail system,
that the salesperson was able to get a copy of and forward to me:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

salesper...@me.example.com

 Technical details of permanent failure:
 Missed upload deadline (state SENT_MESSAGE)

Researching this message, I see that it's generated by gmail and may be
related to sending large attachments, but the client wasn't sending any
attachments.

Does the list have any ideas?

On a few QMTs I just checked, lsof shows 3700-5200. Pretty much stock,

You might need to disable services you don't need (pop3, pop3ssl, and

Sure. Sometimes they get delivered in a couple seconds, other times a
few minutes. Depends on a lot of variables. You have not indicated that
is Gmail is taking a long time to connect to you, or if you still have
problems on your system. You would need to watch the logs to see when
Gmail contacts your server to determine this.

except for dovecot instead of courier.

You might need to disable services you don't need (pop3, pop3ssl, and
associated logs), and throttle others back a bit (concurrencyincoming).

lsof will show which services are using each open file. QMT does need a
 lot
of open files, but my numbers indicate that you should be able to make it
work for just 2 accounts with no problem.

RE: [qmailtoaster] Spambox troubles

2010-07-22 Thread Patrick Ring
OK. I deleted the .qmail file from all accounts.
As well, I reset the spamassassin database using sudo -H -u vpopmail
sa-learn --clear
I followed this with a qmailctl restart

I am still getting a huge amount of false positives, and it is still
dropping the ***SPAM*** marked emails into the .Spam box.
Once messages are in there, it seems to be impossible to get them back
into the inbox (and stay there).

Any advice?

If you are getting false positives, check the message headers. I'll bet
your bayes DB has been tainted with legitimate messages that were marked
as spam, which will have a snowball effect. You'll see legitimate
messages hitting the bayes score categories.

Basically when the spambox is enabled for a user, after all the spam
scans are done the message gets passed to the /etc/mail/mailfilter
script (maildrop). If the message has a spam score in the headers that
is greater than 7 (I think this is the default now) then it gets sent to
the Spam folder and also sent to sa-learn so that spamassassin can
analyze it and learn to identify messages like it as spam more
efficiently. So if a legitimate message gets sent to sa-learn as spam,
spamassassin will be tainted - this will have a snowball effect.

When you enable the spambox for users, it creates a .qmail file in the
user's maildir. This tells it to pass the messages to the mailfilter
script before delivery. You have a couple ways to fix this:

Delete the bayes DB and start over. You may see an increase in spam
initially until spamassassin can learn again (brain-wipe it), but this
is usually preferable to false-positives.

Disable the spambox by recompiling qmailadmin-toaster to disable the
option - this will not REMOVE it for those that already have the .qmail
file - it will only prevent people from turning the option on. You will
then need to go and delete the .qmail files for the users to actually
disable it for users.

Delete the bayes DB, starting over like before, and adjust the
mailfilter script to fit your environment a little better.

Write a spamassassin rule that adds a negative score for things that you
identify as legitimate message contents - eventually this will counter
the tainted bayes, but it will take a LONG time.

After checking the headers and seeing the BAYES_99 category, change it's
score. This can be used in conjunction with some of the options above.

Hope that helps some.

What value do you have for required_score in your
/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf file?

(I use 3.7 FWIW)

Which rules are being satisfied such that your scores are too high?
(The headers will show which rules, and the points per rule)

Have you added this:
score FH_DATE_PAST_20XX 0.0
to your local.cf file? That rule began creating havoc at the beginning
of the year.

Does anyone know if this has been fixed in the upstream package?

[qmailtoaster] CNAME lookup failed temporarily. (#4.4.3)

2010-07-22 Thread Sam - SD

Dear All,

we have a qmail server for several years and running without any problem.

Few days ago, one customer forward me a error msg, which is
--error msg start---
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

te...@***.com:
CNAME lookup failed temporarily. (#4.4.3)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.
-error msg end

we are using this qmail server hosting several domains, all others domains
can receive email from yahoo,

only this te...@***.com cannot receive email from yahoo,

I googled, but seems no help solution,

Any idea ?

Thanks
Sam

This is a DNS lookup failure.
Have any DNS records for the domain changed recently? Perhaps the time
field wasn't updated?

We really can't help much with diagnosis w/out knowing the domain name.
