I have had a look at Monitorix, and had it running at one point. I
was interested in it for monitoring multiple VMs. I like the
graphs and web interface. I don't like that it requires the whole

although ganglia is geared toward clusters to begin with. I did
chat online with Jordi briefly at that time. No mention was made

collectl is presently my monitor of choice. I was looking for
something which would show me i/o usage per process, and collectl
can. It's a pretty impressive piece of software, and it's lean on
  resources.

Monitoring is something I'd like to address with QMT at some
point, but it's still a back burner item. If Jordi would like to
provide us with something that would be an optional package at
this point though, he's more than welcome to join the devel list,
where we could assist with his efforts.

Thanks for bringing this up, CJ.

The developer has sent me this regarding qmail. If someone would
comment so I could forward the info to him that would be great.

So, please, could you send me a full Qmail statistics listing, hence
I could start making an idea if Monitorix could introduce support

Don't forget to explain what are all the requirements and the exact
command line to get such stats.

CJ,

I'm inclined to point him here:
http://wiki.contribs.org/Qmail_Statistics_%28AWStats%29

We need to evaluate the pluses and minuses of awstats vs monitorix.
While I haven't done this thoroughly, I'm leaning toward awstats at this
point. I like the awstats presentation better, and I think the
architecture of monitorix leaves a little to be desired.

If someone would like to do a proper evaluation, that'd be nice.

2012-04-03 Thread Eric Shubert

On 04/03/2012 09:50 AM, Maxwell Smart wrote:

Do we need only one monitoring solution that works with qmail?

I suppose that depends what you consider a monitoring solution to be.
I'm not saying that one piece of software can do everything that might
be desirable. For example, we presently have both mrtg and isoqlog,
which provide different measurements of activity.

There are other aspects of monitoring as well. There are system measures
that are more performance oriented (load, i/o, cpu) which monitorix is
geared toward. I don't know if awstats has anything in that arena or not.

There's also nagios, which (I think) is geared more toward monitoring
system availability and performance.

In general, I see 3 distinct areas that can be monitored. Internally,
there are logs and the OS (loads, cpu, i/o, swap). Externally, a system
can also be monitored for overall availability (networking and
services). A comprehensive monitoring solution will encompass all 3 areas.

Given this understanding of a monitoring solution, I would say the
answer to your question is yes, we need only one. Of course, everyone
is free to use whatever monitoring tools they choose.

Monitoring is not a core component of QMT. It is an add-on, much the
same as webmail. I would very much like to see a team of volunteers who
focus strictly on each of these areas. The monitoring team would focus
on various monitoring requirements and solutions, and the webmail team
would focus on the various webmail choices that are available.

CJ, would you like to head up a monitoring team?

I don't see the downside of having more support for the platform.

I don't mean to discourage participation in the QMT project, in fact
quite the opposite.

My primary concern is that the project proceed in an efficient and
orderly manner. For instance, a good deal of monitoring is based on
logs. I expect that in the not too distant future the present logs will
be replaced with a comprehensive rsyslog solution (which is what the
major distros are moving toward). So it would be best for any monitoring
solutions to be developed against an rsyslog implementation, and not
using the logs in the present QMT. If monitoring tools were developed
using the existing logs, they would need substantial rework when rsyslog
is implemented, making that implementation more difficult and time
consuming.

I hope this explanation is satisfactory. If it's not, let me know what
concerns you.

Thanks.

presently, but I do know that I think mrtg-toaster and isoqlog-toaster can
 stand some improvements.

Actually, I think awstats can visualize qmail stats:

http://wiki.contribs.org/Qmail_Statistics_(AWStats)

Haven't tried to get it working with our toaster, though. It would be
great to have this kind of stats?

Martin also put together some traffic monitoring software about 18 months
 ago:
 http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.qmail.toaster/31499/match=monitor+accounting
I've no idea what that does or the shape it's presently in.

If we already have a working solution, it should be perhaps be part of
the toaster packages?

Can you Martin give us more info about your solution's current state?

And thanks Eric for the tip about collectl, I will try it out.

Cheers,
Peter

I have had a look at Monitorix, and had it running at one
point. I was interested in it for monitoring multiple VMs. I
like the graphs and web interface. I don't like that it
requires the whole kit and kaboodle (apache etc) on each
machine that's being monitored. I like the architecture of
ganglia much better, although ganglia is geared toward
clusters to begin with. I did chat online with Jordi briefly
at that time. No mention was made of QMT though that I recall.

collectl is presently my monitor of choice. I was looking for
something which would show me i/o usage per process, and
collectl can. It's a pretty impressive piece of software, and
 it's lean on resources.

Monitoring is something I'd like to address with QMT at some
point, but it's still a back burner item. If Jordi would like
to provide us with something that would be an optional
package at this point though, he's more than welcome to join
the devel list, where we could assist with his efforts.

Thanks for bringing this up, CJ.

I will mention it, and leave it up to him. What is the address
 to join the devel team?

[qmailtoaster] Re: Monitorix for Qmail

2012-03-30 Thread Eric Shubert

Like I said previously, monitoring isn't high on my list at this time.

That being said, I'd would like (probably in conjunction with isoqlog or
equivalent upgrade) to collect anonymous statistics from volunteer QMT
hosts, which would be published at the QMT site. This data would be
absolutely anonymous, and would show numbers of hosts, domains, users,
and mail activity. Anonymity can be provided by using sha1 keys for
sensitive data (host names and email addresses). The numbers can show
trends (hopefully upward) of QMT usage, as well as examples of capacity,
and perhaps even point to performance problems. Anonymous data such as
cpuinfo, mem, config settings, etc can be included as well. This can all
be pretty easily automated with a new qtp script or two. I have ideas
about how it might be done, and I expect others do as well.

I also really liked the looks of the graphs that Martin put together of
the wiki site soon after it was migrated to a host of his:

http://mirror.qmailtoaster.de/awstats/
I'd like to see something equivalent for QMT. I've no idea what's out
there presently, but I do know that I think mrtg-toaster and
isoqlog-toaster can stand some improvements.

Martin also put together some traffic monitoring software about 18
months ago:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.qmail.toaster/31499/match=monitor+accounting
I've no idea what that does or the shape it's presently in.

Whatever we do, let's not reinvent the wheel. I'm sure there are many
good things which can be brought together to provide improved monitoring
and measuring of QMT performance. I would like whoever tackles this part
of QMT (and it's presently up for grabs) to approach it in a
comprehensive fashion.

As a good bit of this (processing stats) is driven by logs, I think it'd
be best if anything developed in this area was built based on rsyslogd
logs, as that's what I expect QMT will be using eventually. If we get
the reporting software built on rsyslogd, having it might be the push we
need at the time to get rsyslogd implemented. Who knows.

Just wanted to get these ideas out there. Have at it, folks.

Monitorix can send alerts by sms or email ?

FWIW, I've tried both Cacti and Nagios. Monitorix is so much easier to
setup, and easier to read IMHO. Simple and effective.
