When you're sending, you typically only need to look at the send logs,
unless you set your system up to scan everything.

When receiving, you look at the smtp logs, then the spam logs.

I think we've seen that you send okay, and it seems that you receive
okay. Now we need to look at your IMAP logs and see if there's something
in there.

This would be monitoring the /var/log/qmail/imap/current file or looking
at the contents in /var/log/qmail/imap correct?

OK, I'll follow up on both suggestions later. I have some fabrication
work that needs to get delivered. For the moment it appears to be
working albeit slower than I'd like.

2 quick questions.
What file tells the update history?
Is there an archive of older toaster rpms?

BTW, It appears that I do now have a functional caching nameserver.
Thanks for the tips on that. It was just the config in named conf. that
needed tweaking along with moving the 127.0.0.1 address to the correct
position in the resolv.conf file.

Providing you use qtp-newmodel to update, you'll find these things in
/usr/src/qtp-upgrade/* directories. They should be pretty self explanatory.

Ok CJ. I really like Max Smart though, from the old TV series. Used to
watch it all the time.

Anywise, try this:
# qmailctl stop
# queue_repair.py -r
# qmailctl start

I think you'll like it.

Please report the output of the queue_repair.py command. I think you'll
see some errors fixed there.

OK, I'll follow up on both suggestions later. I have some
fabrication work that needs to get delivered. For the moment it
appears to be working albeit slower than I'd like.

2 quick questions.
What file tells the update history?
Is there an archive of older toaster rpms?

Providing you use qtp-newmodel to update, you'll find these things in
/usr/src/qtp-upgrade/* directories. They should be pretty self
explanatory.

I have copies of older packages available here. If you let me know
what version, I can check to see if I have it and make it available to
you.

(What does everyone think of an archive page of older versions of
the packages? )

2009-09-25 Thread Maxwell Smart
That fixed it. I had this problem once before with my old q mail rocks
install. That time it was my fault messing around with the queue while
it was running. Not sure what caused it this time.

You're showing your age now!

Cheers all thanks for all your efforts.

I am not sure what operator error could have caused this. The fact that
it happened to both toasters is odd too.I could see this happening
to one. What was the case with your client that was experiencing the
same issue? When using the qtp-newmodel it stops and starts the toaster

Would there be any benefit to running the queue_repair weekly, monthly

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't had to use it personally in 3+ years.
That's one reason it took so long to figure out what the problem was.

I did update both machines recently. Not sure if that had anything to
do with it or just coincidence. I am glad it's all back to normal. I
did learn a whole load more about DNS, and here I was actually thinking
I had a pretty good handle on it to begin with.

@Jake
I do like the idea of an archive. It can be helpful on occasion. I
don't know if it's worth the time though since a simple request to you
or on the list would probably suffice.

Have a good weekend.

I am not sure what operator error could have caused this. The fact that

 same issue?

 We don't know the cause.

When using the qtp-newmodel it stops and starts the toaster
 as needed correct?

 Yes.

Would there be any benefit to running the queue_repair weekly, monthly
 as a maintenance procedure?

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't had to use it personally in 3+ years.
That's one reason it took so long to figure out what the problem was.

 Eric Shubert wrote:
 Nope. Usually operator error. ;)

 Maxwell Smart wrote:
BTW, I'll answer to either. :)

Did you find out what caused the queue to get hosed?

 Eric Shubert wrote:
Ok CJ. I really like Max Smart though, from the old TV series.
 Used to
 watch it all the time.

 Anywise, try this:
 # qmailctl stop
 # queue_repair.py -r
 # qmailctl start

 I think you'll like it.

Please report the output of the queue_repair.py command. I think
you'll see some errors fixed there.

Glad to see you got it all figured out.
Actually the requests are more trouble than setting up an archive
would be. That's just a matter of copying the files into a directory and
adding a link on the site. I have to tar/gz and copy them to the web dir
every time someone makes a request anyway.

I wonder though, if an older version has ever solved any problem.
If you use qtp-newmodel, you would have every source and binary rpm
that's been installed on the toaster.

If it's that easy though, why bother asking? Just Do It!

It helps on occasion to have an older version of a specific package -
I've needed them for someone's custom app that was written for a
specific older version as an example.
I considered Just Doing It, but I still hesitate because I'm sure
someone will install all the old packages and then get on the list and
ask questions for something that was fixed a year ago or something. I'll
probably just make the Archive a little harder to get to.

Good thought Michael. If we keep the test case from/to his local domain,
that shouldn't matter (I think). Definitely something good to check though.

If I send an e mail to myself whether from a local account ie.
c...@yother.com to c...@yother.com or from cjyot...@pacbell.net to
c...@yother.com and vice versa it takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 20
minutes for the e mail to arrive. This occurs whether I use
Thunderbird (IMAP), Squirrelmail or through the Webmin interface for
checking user mail.

I have now discovered it appears to be happening on both of my
toasters. The are on different IP's and one is mail only. This
particular toaster is web, mail and slave DNS. I have extensively
tested the DNS and it's responding as expected. The toaster that is
only mail I have only tested through the Squirrelmail interface.
composesend5-20 minute delay before it arrives in the inbox. It used
to be virtually instantaneous.

Neither system is running Spamdyke and both systems are fully up to date.

It took 25 minutes to arrive. Even if you take into account that my e
mail client only checks mail every ten minutes that's still 15 minute delay.

The times are synced.

Since you have two mail servers, send a message from the one that has
the LEAST amount of traffic, and send a message to the other one. While
you do this, grab both the send log from the sending server and the SMTP
log from the receiving server and post those so we can see what's going
on in the logs.
Also run a telnet test
(http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/How_to_use_telnet_for_diagnostics)
and see if that works okay. Trying to isolate whether it's on the
sending side or the receiving side.

I was going to suggest that next, but I'd test on the one server. Since
you're seeing the delay there, why introduce more complexity? I'd try
another test, and grab the send and smtp logs at the same time. The
spamd and clam logs wouldn't hurt either.

Oh, and we don't see any delay in this email header.
Are you using pop3 or imap?
I would try clicking get/check mail on the client every 5 seconds or
so and see how long it takes to show up. Please try this.

Also run a telnet test

That's the bottom line. Try to isolate where the delay occurs. I'm
guessing it'll be in the back end (delivery) area.

It took 25 minutes to arrive. Even if you take into account that my e
mail client only checks mail every ten minutes that's still 15
 minute delay.

Since you have two mail servers, send a message from the one that has
the LEAST amount of traffic, and send a message to the other one.
While you do this, grab both the send log from the sending server and
the SMTP log from the receiving server and post those so we can see
what's going on in the logs.

I was going to suggest that next, but I'd test on the one server.
Since you're seeing the delay there, why introduce more complexity?
I'd try another test, and grab the send and smtp logs at the same
time. The spamd and clam logs wouldn't hurt either.

Oh, and we don't see any delay in this email header.
Are you using pop3 or imap?
I would try clicking get/check mail on the client every 5 seconds or
so and see how long it takes to show up. Please try this.

 Also run a telnet test
 (http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/How_to_use_telnet_for_diagnostics)
and see if that works okay. Trying to isolate whether it's on the
sending side or the receiving side.

That's the bottom line. Try to isolate where the delay occurs. I'm
guessing it'll be in the back end (delivery) area.

I can get the log snippet by watching this tail -f

If you use qmlog, you'd see the times clearly. ;)
# qmlog -f smtp
You really want to use qmlog. Trust me on this. It's a powerful tool.

This is what I get when sending. It appears almost instantly.

Since this happens almost instantaneously, I'd say smtp is not the
problem, so spamd and clam logs are probably ok too. 0.0279s is the scan
time. That's fast.

What about the send log?

I have tried checking the server send/receive mail constantly, but it
takes anywhere from 5-25 minutes to respond.

You mean to show up at the client, I presume.

I am using IMAP.

courier-toaster I presume.

How do I test the delivery side?

# cd /home/vpopmail/domains/yother.com/cj/Maildir/new
# ls -ltr | tail
will show you a list of the 10 most recently received unread files. Do
the command to see what's already there, then try another test email,
and repeat the ls command to see how long it takes to make it to here.

Because he's getting the delays on both machines. By performing the
tests using both machines we can at least see what a real world
transaction will look like.
If he's around tomorrow and things aren't too hectic for me, I may try
getting him in the IRC and watch my logs as he tries to send me messages
and see what shows up on my end. Unless someone else is able to do it
before me.

Try looking at your IMAP logs as well. The delivery side seems to look
like it's working okay. Maybe courier is causing the delay.

OK, a little more info.

Both of my servers are experiencing the same delay. I sent an e mail
from server 1 to server 2 I immediately saw it in the tail -f
/var/log/qmail/smtp/current logs, but not in server 2 current logs. I
did a qmailctl restart on server 1 and it then appeared in server 2's
log, but not int he recipients mailbox. I then did a qmailctl restart
on server 2 and it appeared in the recipients mailbox.

I am leaning toward something in the latest updates I did, which was
about a week ago, but don't know where to start.

Thanks for your time as always.

I'm off to finish a couple house-old things before bed, but try and be
more clear in your explanation. You said you send a message from server1
to server2 and it shows in server1's smtp logs, but not in server2's
current log. Which current log? (smtp, spam, etc.) The more detail at
this point the better.

The activity I see when I tail -f /var/log/qmail/smtp/current is what I
mean.

Is there someplace I can see a flow chart of a default setup? and how
to follow the mail through the system? This would be extremely helpful.

I can get you all of the detail you need, but I need to know where to
look.
