Yes, I'm an old guy, so I know it's been around since the 90s.
  But not in as widespread use by "companies" as it is today. Many
  companies in the 90s had onsite microsoft mail servers, or
  sun/unix/linux mail servers  and a lot of the shared hosting was
  used by individuals and casual users, and spammers.


These days many of the small businesses my clients work with
  outsource their mail to hosted exchange or google. I realize a lot
  of spam originates from all the various MS domains and from gmail,
  but I cannot afford to completely block any of those servers. It
  kills my clients as they don't get emails from their customers and
  partners.

I had the same problem with office/outlook senders.
I had to whitelist a big prefix (40.107.0.0/16) in 
/etc/spamdyke/whitelist_ip file, because I had tried whitelist_senders 
before and it wont work.

I tried the exact senders address instead the domain but apparently did 
not work, I will give a try on @domain and the dnswl.org whitelist.

whitelist and machine whose name is mail1.domain1.com, 
mail2.domain1.com as well as just domain1.com


However, either that's not working right or I have something else 
configure incorrectly.



Can someone verify the whitelist file syntax? I looked through the 
spamdyke documentation but I don't see any examples. All I see is the 
syntax @domain1.com, but I thought that was only for the files with 
senders and the like. E.g. a whitelist for email address syntax.



Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, that's what I did. There clearly is something I don't
  understand about how denying reverse DNS works.


I whitelisted the IP and not the domain. My logic is. Someone
  from anywhere could try to fake the "domain" so whitelisting that
  might expose the server. The IP address belongs to Comcast
  Business and is likely to never belong to anyone else. So even
  thought that IP might eventually belong to someone else, it's not
  likely to belong to a bad actor.

Yes, upgrade, but look in the clam log as well. I'd be interested to see 
if any errors showed up in the clam log...if it were my server. If 
upgrade doesn't help looking in the logs could be helpful in determining 
the issue.

You can turn ClamAV off in /var/qmail/control/simcontrol
just to quickly eliminate, or verify, the problem:

I'd look take a look in your clam log. I think 
/var/log/qmail/clamav/current??? or something like that. Correspond the 
time of qq soft reject... with the time in the clamav log.

Helmut,

Eventually it will be in general release unless you want it there 
sooner, it is in the testing tree presently (per previous posts), 
though; and I've already implemented 5.0.1-0 on my business production 
server. Be mindful that if you're upgrading (NOT A FRESH INSTALL) 
spamdyke from the testing tree you'll have to address the below 7 
options in your server's spamdyke.conf file as an upgrade does not 
overwrite existing conf file. Without the adjustments below mail will 
not be delivered.


  1)  If the "reject-missing-sender-mx" option is given, it should be 
changed to

  "reject-sender" with a value of "no-mx".
  2) If the "rejection-text-missing-sender-mx" option is given, it 
should be

  renamed to "rejection-text-sender-no-mx".
  3) If the "reject-identical-sender-recipient" option is given, it 
should be

  changed to "reject-recipient" with a value of "same-as-sender".
  4) If the "rejection-text-identical-sender-recipient" option is 
given, it should

  be renamed to "rejection-text-recipient-same-as-sender".
  5) If the option "local-domains-file" is given, it should be renamed to
  "qmail-rcpthosts-file".
  6) If the option "local-domains-entry" is given, it should be 
removed.  Any

  domains given with this option should be added to the file given with
  "qmail-rcpthosts-file".
  7) If qmail's "morercpthosts" file is provided to spamdyke with the
  "qmail-rcpthosts-file" option (formerly "lcoal-domains-file"), the 
CDB file

  should be provided instead with the "qmail-morercpthosts-cdb" option.

dns-blacklist-entry = zen.spamhaus.org
dns-blacklist-entry = bl.spamcop.net

or add another dns list


5) the configuration files of spamassassin are here: / etc / mail /
spamassassin /
to increase or decrease the sensitivity of spamassassin I can only
change these entries?
required_score

Changing the score is one way.  I believe you can also us spam lists

My problem is now my mail queue willnot send,
remote queue currently 88 an going up
tried qmHandle -a

waited a bit, the qmHandle -l, still more not going out.

This is a complete rebuild, using Centos ISO, all yum and qtp-menu updates,
re-added all domains and users, tested some at random, no errors.
Now its live, email not going out of box,
Commented all out in spamdyke config. Restarted email server etc.

Please help

troubleshootingsee the logs os SMTP , antispam and clamavsometimes 
spamassassin may have a problem and lock the queue.

Check your DNS too

Normally queue is in /var/qmail with the following permissions:

By the way, the maildir is:

Try running it from command line:

# cat /var/log/qmail/smtp/current | /usr/share/qmt/scripts/spamdyke-stats


See if it returns any errors.

Also, if your spamdyke is set to log to /var/log/maillog, cat that file 
instead of /var/log/qmail/smtp/current.

Hello again,
  Thanks to Eric and to Brent but neither seem to be the issue.
I have updated spamdyke and check the script at the command
line and still only gets zeros for results! Also no errors reported at
the command line.
  I have noticed getting more spam through since the update though!

and $SMTPLogRoot.  Check the rights on these to make sure they weren't 
changed.


I updated clam the other day using qtp-newmodel and I had to fix rights 
on /var/log/qmail/smtp.  Some of my scripts I was running interactively 
weren't working right because of this.  I fixed the rights issue before 
the daily report jobs ran, so I don't know if they would have been affected.

in there looks like this:

Thanks Brent. Looks like its working now. Not exactly sure what it was I 
did that fixed it...but somewhere along the lines of rebuilding all the 
QMT packages and reinstalling Perl modules seems to have done the trick.

If the first server (MX 10)  is down , the second server ( MX 20 ) will 
receive all messages from the outside!
So, you need all the protection measures as the first server :  spamdyke 
, clamav , spammfilter, etc.

I have stopped the install because I am shelled in with my laptop and 
have to goto work.  I have tried a reboot and install even with qmail 
stopped but still is stuck the next day.  The problem seems to be only 
server 1.  The other completed this time tonight.

run through Spamassassin (If I am remembering correctly).  I can see it in
the SMTP log.  When I look at the same email in the SPAMD log, I see that it
has a -98 score (which it should).  If that inital score is above a set
number, the server responds with Your email appears to be spam back to the
sender and deletes the email.  That is the number I am looking to edit.

Spamdyke not score email... Only accept or deny the smtp conection

  338900-137...@listserv.ncm20.com:j...@renshawauto.com

 I have seen these exact type of emails score as high as 7 or 8.

 Also, I can say that Spamassassin is scoring these emails correctly
 since I also have a whitelist entry there, too.

Try changing the log level to something more verbose.

log-level=debug

That might give more clues on which config line is the problem.

I've just implemented Spamdyke.  I'm wondering if there is a Spamdyke
specific log I can watch or is it apparent through the
/var/log/qmail/smtp/current. 

 I don't know about specific log of spamdyke may be someone else
can tell you about this. Even I also go through
/var/log/qmail/smtp/current file

 I do see a lot more of grey-listing and denials that I don't
remember seeing before, but it seems to have quieted the smtp logs. Is
that normal?

 Yes, it is normal.

I do remember seeing something (here on the list) about Spamdyke
reducing the load on the server by keeping things blocked at the
source, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for yet.  Though,
my client with the worst spam troubles does suddenly seem to have a
siginificant reduction in traffic, and no spam yet.

 I bet you will start loving it. Spamdyke will reduce 80% of Spam
at Source Level and you will find tremendous increase in your server
performance as Clam AV and SpamAssassin have to scan remaining 20% of
mails.

Hi there,

This is very normal behaviour. Graylisting not only depends on your server's 
timing settings, but on the behavior of the sending MTA. If that MTA does not 
retry within a given time (that is what you can configure) the mail will not be 
delivered, but regarded as spam. However, the time the sending server waits 
before resending is not something you can configure.

That means that as long as the sending server's reply in a timeframe defined by 
your graylist-min-secs and graylist-max-secs, the mail will be delivered with 
exactly the retr delay that the sending server's admin had configured.

I have made no changes to the configuration files recently. 

I restarted the server to clear the problem and it occurred again within 24
hours

I concur. Presuming you have 127.0.0.1 as the first line in your 
/etc/resolv.conf, what does

# dig @127.0.0.1 -x 207.115.36.143
give you?
You should use whatever nameserver address is listed first in your 
toaster's /etc/resolv.conf file.

I have done some testing and found that it does not resolve as
expected.  If I change my option in my named.conf file to recursion
yes;  it then works.  From what I have read I don't want to have it set
up that way.  What is reason not to have recursion set to yes?

Have you tried setting a nameserver in the DNS OPTIONS section of 
spamdyke.conf? This should override the nameservers set in /etc/resolv.conf. 
You could use your ISP's  nameservers, or OpenDNS (208.67.220.220 and 
208.67.222.222).

eg: dns-server-ip-primary=208.67.220.220
   dns-server-ip=208.67.222.222
