I've found it to be a mind over matter issue.

If you think about that which you can no longer do, instead of trying

I live in a nursing home
in a small rural town that's developing rapidly.A state road (228) runs in
front of our home and is less than a mile to the highway express and when you're
outside our front entrance or near our duck pond you can hear and watch the
traffic as it heads into town ortowards Jacksonville. Our back yard is a
staff parking lot but outside my window, which faces north, used to be a quiet
wooded area but has been mowed down and now there's hills of dirt growing and
then disappearing as construction vehicles go back and forth busily preparing
the once forested land for the town's newest bank. And early next year we're
slated to have a super Walmart built about a half mile or so from us, we're very
excited.

Sad, isn't it?

If you can meet another member I encourage it.

Re: [QUAD-L] Quality of Life and SCI ~~ Huh?

2006-07-10 Thread Brien
In some ways my quality of life is better, in other ways it has
declined. For example: going from an ironman triathlete to a very
quiet, patient lifestyle is much appreciated by my sig other and
family/friends and me. I have slowed down and I stop and smell the
roses, pardon the cliche. So, in my case, the quality of life
remains the same..Excellent

Enjoy Summer,

Brien

Hi All,
On and off I participate in studies regarding my SCI. Often I'm
asked something like ...how would you rate your quality of life
since your SCI? This question gets SO deep under my skin, I could
scream.

How do you all feel about your quality of life since your injury?

I didn't fake very long or very well. They figured me out pretty fast
- I was a long time understanding exactly what they were about. Good
riddance.

I think you are right on Mark. I
joined one a few years ago just because I couldn't believe there was such an

All of them aren't brave enough to go out in public but the ones who do and
then write about it are treated like gods. They REALLY hate anyone who
is really paralyzed being in their group because we tend to 'judge'
them. The girls will take pictures of themselves usually in short
skirts and low tops so the guys get a great show of wheelchairs AND
sex. What a life. The group I was in had about 1400
members. My last message got me booted - you can probably guess
why.

Amen dude./ I'm always amazed at what one can fix with duct tape and

Sometimes in life a few spines must be broken. Your patient
broke his spine and so to must his books make the spinal sacrifice. It's
a paperback not a priceless work of literature. Some have gone so far as

binder. The one thing I've learned since my injury is that necessity and
functionality run the show. Eric Kelvin Smith

Hello all on the chat list.

I was hoping someone might have some advice/tips/contacts with regard
to assistive devices for reading books for those folk with high level
quadriplegic spinal cord injury or similar. There is a chap at the rehab'
unit to which I'm attached who loves to read paperback novels and was
after something to allow him to read independently (given his relatively
average hand function at the moment). He's working away at his abilities
with his hands and has alsodownloaded a number of books as well.
Hehastried a reading stand that has meant breaking the spine of
the novel for it to be functional, and even then it's been prone to flick
over 6 pages at once so it's not been an entire success. He'd rather avoid
breaking the spine of a book for one thing and so was curious to know if
anyone had any suggestions? You may know of things commercially available or
just plain clever tricks that people have developed to tackle this kind of
challenge - I'm sure he's not the only person who's had to tackle this
one.

So, any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Photos are
always welcome too if they're handy.

Thanks in advance, bye for now.
