RE: [QUAD-L] Help
do you have Medicaid? _ From: ladyno...@aol.com [mailto:ladyno...@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2010 4:22 PM To: big46...@fuse.net; quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Help I am currently living at home, but looking for an assistant living facility, as I do not have the help here that I need. I pay someone to come in the morning to get me washed and dressed and into my chair. The remainder of the day, my 80 year old mother, who is in poor health, is here with me. I pay someone to come in the evening, to put me into bed. During the night time, my mother and husband are here, but they both sleep upstairs, and I am downstairs in the family room, with my cell phone headset on in case of an emergency. During the nights, I sleep on my back entire time and sit in my chair from 8 AM to 9 PM. I've been fortunate to this point (five years post as of tomorrow July 2) but now my bottom is starting to break down and I need even more care and attention that I don't have. My husband does not want to be a caregiver. He provides for what I need, but is not very attentive, which is why I need assisted-living. It is so expensive that I really can't afford it, which is why I'm still at home. Naomi, C-4 quad since July 2, 2005 In a message dated 6/30/2010 1:33:08 P.M. I hope you don't mind me asking but what is everyone's living situation? Are you in a group home, nursing home, apartment, independent living situation? My situation is changing and I am looking for my best option. I am a C 3/4 quad who needs about 50 hours of care. Any info would help. Thank you, Adam
RE: [QUAD-L] Help
My living situation is much different from most, as I have two adult mentally handicapped gentleman living with me. The older guy has been living with me since 1980 and the younger one since 1982, eight years before I broke my neck. They are my job and I get paid for my time training them, and for all living expenses. It is a win-win situation. I have 35 HRS per week for attendant care for myself, I am a complete C4 with no movement other than a shoulder shrug, so I have someone come in the morning and get me up and then another person returns in the evening and puts me to bed. My husband and I divorced six years after I broke my neck, and I retained the house and property. In 2002 I sold the house to my daughter and built one designed by me and my son in law and friends built the house. Now that I'm over 65-get Social Security retirement, but I was not eligible for 14 years for disability because I was missing one quarter of work in the last five years before I was injured. My caregivers are provided by an agency which is funded by a grant from the state of Nevada. Payment is on a sliding scale depending on income. It's a fantastic program. I am very lucky to have it. I have my own van, a 1990 Chevy that had been converted into a recreational vehicle with the raised roof. I purchased it five years ago for $4000 and installed a lift that I purchased off of Ebay for $500. Reno also has an excellent access program. Door to door for $3.00 each way for any reason, a 30 minute window in which they arrive, and if it is after their standard working hours a taxi ride for the same $3.00. By having a host family for my guys as I call them I do give up an open schedule. If I want to go out of town I have to make arrangements for someone to live in the house and send somebody needs to be with them on the property at all times I have to schedule all appointments and social activities around their time frame. But believe me, it is very important as I have some financial independence and is well worth the drawbacks. Joan in sunny in Reno where summer has finally come. C4 quad 1990
RE: [QUAD-L] Hello, encouragment please
Don is right, you won't get much sympathy from us high quads, for myself I would like to be able to feed myself and get a drink whenever I want to, and most of all be able to scratch my nose when inches or get that damn off my neck because I can actually feel that. J The very best advice that I can give you is the same advice that was given to me at the Santa Clara rehab: don't let your disability control you, you control your disability. Good luck and just go for it Joan
RE: [QUAD-L] Bluetooth for music RadioShack adapter
Hypa-fix is an adhesive tape that I can tolerate. I still have the cord from the Jabra to the phone, but I wear the Jabra on my chin controller is so I usually just run it under my shirt. This is what the RadioShack online catalog shows http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2603246retainProdsIn Session=1retainProdsInSession=1numProdsPerPage=20 2.5mm to 3.5 mm Cell to Stereo Adapter http://RSK.imageg.net/images/pixel.gif Model: FG-06-0518-1A | Catalog #: 274-004 Hope that that will help. You can go online and order directly from their online catalog. I absolutely love my Jawbone. We put it in the morning when I get up in my chair at 6:30 AM usually, and no matter what I do, bounce around outdoors, tilt back in and out of my van 4 or 5 times, be outside in a strong wind it stays in my ear and does not cause any discomfort. We usually take it out about 9:00 PM. It also does not block the entire noise from that ear which is very fortunate as I am getting harder of hearing as I get older. Hello Joan, you said that your caretakers are provided by an agency, which is funded by a grant from the state. Did you have to write a grant request yourself, or how was that taken care of and how did you know about the grant Have a Blessed Day, Naomi -Original Message- From: Joan Anglin poaj...@sbcglobal.net To: quad-list quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Fri, Jul 2, 2010 2:27 pm Subject: RE: [QUAD-L] Help My living situation is much different from most, as I have two adult mentally handicapped gentleman living with me. [QUAD-L] Anniversary
Today, July 2, marks the five-year mark of being stricken with Transverse Myelitis. I am celebrating it by being bedridden, nursing two pressure sores. Have you ever tried lying on one side, for days at a time? It causes me to have claustrophobic anxiety attack , but it is quite necessary to avoid flap surgery :-( Naomi, C-4 Quad due to Transverse Myelitis since July 2, 2005
