I have heard that so much arm & shoulder use can make area become bone on bone. Anyway if any of you have had this or been treated for similar, please let me know? thanks ! Dan H.***
Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder pain
A while ago, I started having pain that extended from my left shoulder, up my neck, and into my lower left jaw. It would come and go, but seemed to be getting more intense. I thought I was developing heart problems and made an appointment with my doctor. She did an office exam and scheduled x-rays. I would have expected an EKG. She knew what she was doing. It turned out I had arthritis starting on my collar bone and shoulder area. I then saw a specialist. He looked at my x-rays and told me that I had arthritis and by the way it was or where it was, he believed it to be related to my extra use of my arms because of my SCI. He suggested trying to use my cane less and try to use my arms less with the heavy lifting and using my legs more. I could not figure out how to use my arms less when getting out of a chair or in and out of bed. I carry my cane in my right hand, but in the house, I don't use the cane. I furniture walk or I don't hold onto things. So working in the yard walking along the chain link fence without my cane. I use the cane for balance and it was more of a security blanket. I just felt safe having it in my hands. I got to the point that I was confident enough to walk without my cane. Strangely, NOT using the cane in my right hand helped my left shoulder calm down. Now, I try to avoid using my cane. I will use my walker, delux model with a seat, if I have to go out or I hold onto my husband if I need to. Otherwise, I ony leave the house when I am having a great day. SO after all that, the pain might not be what you think it is. As another poster replied that if ibuprofen and heat don't help, then you might want to see a doctor. I can still do daily activities with some pain, but when it comes to putting all my weight on it to transfer (from a low to high place), it is weak, painful and sometimes gives out mid-transfer. Could an ER diagnose something like this or should I see a specialist? It has been staying the same and not getting better over 2 weeks, using ibuprofen and heat. Thanks, Todd

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder pain
Much depends on the doctors present at anytime one enters an ER. Some have specialty training, while others are just certified in ER Med. A specialist, Medical Doctor, that specializes in Rehab Medicine would be my first consideration. Best Wishes
Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder pain
If ibuprophen and heat takes the pain away you are golden. If not you may ave somethingmore serious. Its more than likely an impingement and rest , ibuprophen possibly heat could help. The only thing that will tell the whole story of damage is an mri. A ct scan can only tell you if the basic bone structure is intact. Im c7 and had a similar situation, I had a ct scan that revealed nothing, so i went easy on the shoulder and did a little exercise and after 6 months it was back to normal. ron c7 From: Todd Daugherty todd.daughe...@gmail.com To: quad list quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Thu, September 20, 2012 8:56:12 AM Subject: [QUAD-L] Shoulder pain I am C6 inc functionally and use a manual chair always. Re: [QUAD-L] shoulder pain
I have some tendentious and arthritis in both of my shoulders but I had that before I was injured five years ago. When my shoulders are sore I have my caregiver give me a massage with their hands and stick therethumbsin the sore spot as hard as possible. This makes me want to leap out of the chair but when they are done I'm pain-free. If my shoulders feel a little stiff or sore I will also have been used a massager on me and that really helps. I have my caregivers do some light to range of motion every now and then but I prefer the massages to keep everything loose. I seem to have a lot of the same pain and sensation that several people on this list have but I must have a higher pain tolerance than others because the sensations and pain only remind me that I am alive. I do have Diazepam that my doctor prescribed for me to accent my Baclofen for spasms but I only use it to help me sleep every few blue moon's. I request only 50 pills per prescription and I usually end up throwing away 30-40 or sometimes more every couple of years or when I go to my yearly visit to the doctor, if I remember to take them along. Re: [QUAD-L] shoulder pain
Often the shoulder blades and collarbone feels like it is broken, long after the spine has healed. I believe that it is due to a nerve harness that comes over the shoulders and crisscrosses over the chest, down to the diaphragm. These the muscles have a bad habit of spasming causing that pain. Most anyone in massage training can work those muscles. It takes some time. Chemicals help, like mint, hot pepper rub and some of the store preps along with infra-red heat, to loosen those muscles. Just make sure that they have some idea of what they are doing. Too much pressure early on is not good. Check out your yellow pages for massage schools in your hood and offer to be a subject. You never know... Best Wishes W In a message dated 11/21/05 9:05:04 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: My left shoulder has been killing me.what is massage tx ? thanks , Dan

I'm glad you're having your rehab dod check it out. BillLeesburg, FLC-6 Incomplete since 7/20/68AOL/AIM ID: MikeyBird3Stupidity is NOT a handicap! Park elsewhere!
