Subject: Decent price for a boxed 660av

What does anyone think a boxed 660av is worth? I can't find any 660s on
eBay UK or USA as completed items. I need a bit of guidance. It's an
inside UK item so it's gonna be a few GBP but I wanna know the US price
as well so I can take a decent aggregate guess.

I recently paid UK£25 for a 660av from an ebay auction (it was advertised as
a PPC 6100). They are quite rare on the used market in UK, although as a
guide 840av's are going for around UK£30 on ebay these days...

Cheaper comestically challenged 660's are more common without the CD ROM
faceplate for around UK£15.

Re(2): 7.1.1 Slowness Revealed! See the light!

2003-01-03 Thread Derek Morton
SCSI Manager 4.3 was not built into the OS until (I believe) system 8.
It was an extension which first appeared with system 7.5. Read this for
a good explanation:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=17019

I would not be too certain that the extension is completely system 7.1
compatible either. The AV Quadras are able to run 7.1, but SCSI Manager
4.3 is in ROM on those machines (they also require an enabler to run
with 7.1).

MacBench was written by Ziff-Davis, They stopped developing or
supporting Macintosh Benchmark software years ago, although I believe
that you can still download version 5.0 from their FTP site (all
references have been removed from their web site). I have copies of the
older versions, if you want I can email you a copy (version 1.x or 2.0),
or a CD image (version 3.0 or 4.0).

Perhaps I will do some benchmarking this weekend on my Q-950. It would
be interesting to see what kind of performance boost comes with using
SCSI Manager 4.3.

I thought SCSI Manager 4.3 was not needed at some version 7.1 because

Mystery cables strike three

2003-01-03 Thread Don
My hat is off to all of you ASCI artists, my attempst as good as they
look at my side do not servive the trip to the list. My appologies for
the multible posts. I really would like someone to help me identify the
cables. I do not know the scrambling is taking place.

Here is a text discription of each cable:

The first has a 9 pin D style plug with all pins occupied. It has the
thumb screw attaching studs at one end and is connected to a mini din
plug printer or adb style format..

The second cable has a 9 pin D style with the left pin and the right
pin of the 5 pin row present (having 3 blanks between) and the 4 pin row
has 2 blank spots on the left side and 2 pins at the right side,
connected to a mini din which sports a plastis locator pin like old
apple talk connectors. (When looking at the connector with the locator
placed at the 12 o'clock position, the 11, 9, 7, and 3 pins are present
and the 2, and 5 o'clock locations are blank.

Once again appologies for the 2 previous usless asci art attempts.

Sounds like a Mac-to-LaserWriter (or LW Plus) cable. I've never tried it but
you might also have success getting a 512 networked with another Mac with this
cable.

The second cable has a 9 pin D style with the left pin and the right
pin of the 5 pin row present (having 3 blanks between) and the 4 pin row
has 2 blank spots on the left side and 2 pins at the right side,
connected to a mini din which sports a plastis locator pin like old

I haven't a clue there, although I suppose that might *also* be a cable for
putting a 512 on a LocalTalk network.

Try the Ports and Pinouts doc linked in the FAQ (or on Gamba's page) and see if
you can deduce anything from which pins are connected.

Power Performa 475

2003-01-03 Thread Bill Judson
I seem to recall somebody somewhere talking about putting a 6100 logic
board in a pizzabox case...not the 610/660, which is the Apple-approved
upgrade, of course, but an LC-type pizzabox. Or maybe I remember it wrong.

Besides the obvious problem with the back ports, which an be handled with
a dremmel (sp?) tool, I wonder if there are any other
problems/pitfalls...the PSU would probably be the bigest hurdle, the
case is probably too low to put a 6100 PDS card adaptors in...altho'
maybe you can stick a Sonnet G3 upgrade

Thanks in advance,

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-03 Thread Michael Emery
Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

The SpigotPower AV's were the later ones sold for the
PowerMacs. The only difference between the two, AFAIK,
is the little ribbon cable required on the PMacs.

The SPAV preceded the SPRO to market in actuality. And by the time the
SPRO appeared, it was soon regarded as obsolete compared to what the
competition had on the market -- poorer quality full-screen video, not
compatible with the then-new Macs on the market and such. However, it's
sorta fun to tinker with still.

Notwithstanding the little ribbon cable, the BIG DIFFERENCE is that the
SPAV handles 8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color. That would
make the SPRO superior to the SPAV, yes?

My setup will record 640x480 NTSC at 30fps, but I just
have problems always getting output from Spigot all the
time.

The older apps might work better for you, but QuickTime is a mighty
equalizer too. I would expect your capture card and its output to be
universally compatible.

Brett,

You might try some of the Mac newsgroups through your ISP.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-03 Thread Rob
Yes, it has the little extended part next to the Nubus connector. I was
planning on downgrading the OS to 7.5 or 7.6 just to see if it runs a
little more consistently. One of these days... It's actually sitting on the
desk, but I got side tracked by a BeOS install on a StarMax and a couple of
G3 upgrades (6100 7500) that I wanted to play with... The pile never seems
to get any smaller!

Interesting. Does the Pro AV have the PDS connector behind the NuBus
slot, specifically designed for the AV Quadras?

I have similar problems with mine. I think it may be later versions of
Quicktime but It's a long time since I set mine up. I'd have to go to
the trouble of setting up 7.1 with Quicktime 1.6.1 and the 088 enabler
to test it and frankly I can't be bothered :D.
