Experiences with capturing video on an 840av

2002-04-13 Thread Psnoss

There have been some interesting posts on capturing video on an 840av.

I've spent the past two weekends capturing video on my 840av and have come up
with a few questions that I hope others would like to answer or share their
comments.

First, here's some background on my setup.

My 840av System Specs:

I have 96 MB RAM and a 4 GB SCSI hard disk. I'm running Mac OS 8.1 and using
Apple Video Player to capture video. I then transfer the stored video to my
PowerMac and burn it onto a CD.

Past Projects:

I've been successful at recording 15 minutes of video, but my system failed
when I tried 30 minutes. I think I know why it failed (didn't capture,
compress, and store the video successfully), but I wanted to hear other
people's ideas as well.

I've read in the Mac OS 8 Bible by Lon Poole (1997) about how to capture
video (p. 514-515). I've followed his advice of turning off virtual memory,
file sharing, and inserting a floppy and a CD to increase performance. He
says that a temporary file is created on the hard disk where Apple Video
Player is running, and a normal frame size (320 X 240) requires 2 MB to 4 MB
of disk space per second to capture a video.

Using 4 MB as an upper bound, approximately 15 minutes of captured video
would require 3.6 GB of disk space for the temporary file. Thus, 30 minutes
would require about 7.2 GB of disk space, which my system does not have. The
lack of hard disk space is probably the reason my system failed to capture,
compress, and store 30 minutes of video.

My Questions:

Are these estimates consistent with the experience of others? That is, does
it appear that 15-20 minutes of captured video would require about 4 GB of
disk space to process and save?

How much memory should be allocated to the application? The suggested size
is 2500. Is there an advantage to increasing this size? How is RAM used by
the application? Should I use as much RAM as possible (for example, 64 MB)?

How long is other people's videos? And, how much RAM and hard disk space do
other users need to capture these videos.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

I concur.

Haven't done it myself but that's what I've always *heard* from reliable
sources, so I'd say it makes sense.
