Re Cables (part 2)

2003-03-09 Thread Don

Referring to Re: Cables, at 18:33 -0500, 3/7/03, (Robert
Patterson) eloquently elucidated:

You are correct. A special straight-through cable to the switchbox, and
regular Mac printer cables from the box to each printer. That is what has
  always worked in my experience.

Note that many switchboxes made for Macs INCLUDED this special cable, which
unfortunately was often not marked as a special cable, which caused a great
deal of confusion from the outset. :-(

and where could one get such a wonderful device?

Which brings me back to one part of my original question...

Is there an EASY way to take a regular ADB printer cable and
simply splice it and rewire it properly to make it work instead
of the 'right' cable?

Since there seems to be confusion about one part of my question,
(maybe I used wrong terminology?) I am using a stylewriter 1500
printer. That particular printer does not connect into the scsi
chain like some of the others (at least one laser writer that I
know of) does.

I am not certain that I used proper terminology in the above
identifying of the correct cable, but I do know there are two
different cables needed to be used when going through the switch
box as has been mentioned by several people.

So...again I ask has anyone here ever done the splice on the normal
cable to complete the set up through the switch box...regardless if
that changes it from straight to crossover, or crossover to strait?
I 'presume' such a splicing would be easily done by reversing two
of the normal printer cable wires.

All I'd need is to know which two. If all else fails, I'll have
to get out a meter, and go at it sorta blind till I figure out which
ones are right.

Thanks for all the good feedback so far.
Don

Don,

Actually, 3 signals have to be cross-connected. And yes, I've done
this splice. :-)

If you look into the open end of a mini-DIN8 male plug (not the solder side)
the pin designation is as follows:

 6 7 8

3 4 5

 1 2

Here is the way a standard Mac printer cable is wired:

One endOther end

1 HSKo -- HSKi 2
2 HSKi -- HSKo 1
3 TxD- -- RxD- 5
4 Grnd --- Grnd 4
5 RxD- -- TxD- 3
6 TxD+ -- RxD+ 8
7 GPi --- Gpi 7
8 RxD+ -- TxD+ 6

As you can see (I hope! ASCII art was not one of my strong points :-)
pins 1, 3 and 6 are crossed to pins 2, 5 and 8 respectively.

Hope this helps!

Rob
