This is the first I've heard of MacBooks being "not supported".

I know at least one person personally who is currently running Qubes
on a recent (<2yo) MacBook, and it is completely usable.

The only issues were the need for qubes-input-proxy because the
keyboard attaches via USB, and needing to somehow bootstrap wireless
drivers, fetching them via another computer and transferring them (or
sources for building them) via flash drive.

YMMV

R4 Will be fedora-23 based for dom0 right?

This is the plan right now.

Why plans always point to old fedora release? Fedora 25 already available.
Why Qubes dom0 planed to be at fedora-23? (two versions delay)

To not delay Qubes 4.0 any more than necessary. Switching to new Fedora
release requires some work. And as Andrew pointed out, it isn't a
problem for security. If anything at all, some hardware compatibility,
but we will provide newer kernel at least.

To avoid this type of situations, why not use an LTS distro (CentOS, Unbuntu
...) for dom0??

In most cases LTS distro does not solve hardware compatibility problem
at all - you still get old drivers even if the release is still
supported. The only difference is how long bug fixes (for this outdated
software) are released.

I have found Ubuntu LTS to be well maintained with driver updates over
the life of the release. Even if it were a problem in cases like Intel
Skylake individuals with cutting-edge hardware could still download
backported packages themselves.

Debian seems to be another matter... It has no true LTS (or, every
release is "LTS" if an external team puts in the effort). Its not
fastidious about maintaining device compatibility, and it doesn't
perform extensive testing and certification of actual hardware
configurations. So even though Debian benefits from a greater focus on
security and larger package selection, it still falls short of what a PC
OS should be in ways similar to Fedora.

Chris

So, generally it is good idea, but it will not solve this particular
problem. This is why we have this ticket:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1919
See discussion there for details.

This is a known bug afaik. It would seem that some of the
mounted block devices are hanging before they can be
properly unmounted. You can see this when you hit any of the
 F keys during shutdown.

 I wonder if there's a ticket?

Could be an upstream issue, then. Consider filing a bug report with
Fedora?

I've noticed pretty frequent dom0 updates from the Fedora repos. I
assume that using a currently-supported distro in dom0 (for the
moment, anyway) is the reason for more frequent updates (compared to
the latter part of 3.1's lifespan).

seems like diff bug. I have the one where it will get hung unmounting a /tmp
device or something. stuck on stop jobs back and forth between 1 of 2 forever.
The work around for this is to shut down all vms before shutting down the pc.
All the ones that don't start on boot is good enough on my machine.

But for it to freeze on reached target shutdown is weird. Sounds like another
issue.

I'm using KDE plasma since the beginning of Qubes 3.2
I installed from the qubes repo with:
$ sudo qubes-dom0-update @kde-desktop-qubes

It worked perfectly up today.
In addition to the broken dependencies. I'm worried about the stability.
Why this massive update in repo qubes 3.2?
It is supposed that the fc-23 on dom0 will be just in qubes 4, right?

Are you using (or attempting to use) KDE in dom0 on Qubes 3.2? If so,
it's possible that this is why you have a lot of (what appear to me to
be) KDE-related broken dependencies. One option you might want to
investigate is to group install KDE. Things change rather quickly in
the Fedora/KDE world, so I'm not sure which command they're using
nowadays, but it's probably one of these (or similar):

$ sudo qubes-dom0-update @kde
$ sudo qubes-dom0-update @kde-desktop
$ sudo qubes-dom0-update --action=groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation"

Note that this will probably pull a *lot* of KDE stuff into dom0, so
be sure that you're aware of the risks before doing this.

This was my reply to the related Github issue[1] before I saw this post
(clearly, this was the more appropriate venue for my reply). And with your main
use case being torrenting, you might not want your traffic flowing over Tor
(depending on what you're torrenting).

1. I2P in ProxyVM: As you found, this is challenging because you need routing
and firewall rules to send the traffic to the right places. You can get an idea
of how things work by following Qubes VPN guide[2] and watching Qubes SOCKS
proxy issue[3].

2. I2P in AppVM: Easy (set it up like you would normally) but less secure
(misbehaving apps might be able to bypass).

3. I2P in Whonix-Workstation AppVM: Slower (traffic flows through Tor, then
I2P: user -> tor -> i2p -> internet) but secure in that any leakage goes
through Tor. Also fully documented[4] and somewhat supported[5].

1. "Why do I hear about so many Java insecurities? Are other languages more
secure?"[6]
2. I2P Devs are no slouches to intentionally use flawed language.
3. i2pd official wiki[7] claims many advantages but security is not one of
them. (flexibility, speed, efficiency, footprint)

software that is expressly written, adapted (or at least audited) for
use on i2p.

Chris

Thanks for your answer.

By ProxyVM you mean something like sys-whonix? If so how could one setup one,
so that there can be no leaks?

When you create a VM in Qubes, proxyVM is one of the choices available;
think of it as 'sys-firewall'.

For an example of anti-leak configuration in a proxyVM, see the VPN doc:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vpn/#set-up-a-proxyvm-as-a-vpn-gateway-using-iptables-and-cli-scripts

I think it would be best to set up i2p in a place like /rw/config or
/home, in either a proxyVM or appVM (not a netVM). Otherwise, you could
consider using a Tails HVM which would have it pre-installed.

It's not black and white. Whether you should install and run programs
in dom0 depends on your security model. You can install and run DE- or
WM-related programs in dom0 as long as you're willing to accept the
risk.

Qubes isn't supported on VirtualBox or on Macbooks, so it's likely one
or both of those. There are threads on trying to accomplish each one
separately (I don't recall any on doing both simultaneously), but
you're probably going to have to do a lot of DIY hacking to get this
setup to work (if it's even possible).

Qubes network server may be able to add the ability for Windows to join
your LAN with its own IP address, thereby making it visible to your phone.

https://github.com/Rudd-O/qubes-network-server

but, frankly, I have never tested it with Windows.

[qubes-users] DevOps Tutorial for free @mindmajix

2016-12-08 Thread Aarusha
DEVOPS TUTORIAL
This tutorial gives you an overview and talks about the fundamentals of DevOps.
WHAT IS DEVOPS

The term “DevOps” typically refers to the emerging professional movement that
advocates a collaborative working relationship between Development and IT
Operations, resulting in the fast flow of planned work (i.e., high deploy
rates), while simultaneously increasing the reliability, stability, resilience
and security of the production environment.
Our DevOps online training programme enlightens you on how DevOps differs from
Agile. One tenet of the Agile development process is to deliver working
software in smaller and more frequent increments, as opposed to the the “big
bang” approach of the waterfall method. This is most evident in the Agile goal
of having potentially shippable features at the end of each sprint . Where as
DevOps extends and completes the continuous integration and release process by
ensuring the code is production ready and providing value to the customer.

[qubes-users] What is the best way to use i2p in Qubes? Wouldn't it be great if we had native i2p support?

2016-12-08 Thread 5fxfc1+2ch7pcmy34te01rpv5qj0zj3h115fu90fwr3h7yl5u via qubes-users
Hi everyone!

I wanted to ask: What is the best way to use i2p in Qubes? Should I setup a
NetVM or install i2p in a TemplateVM? Also since Java is not the most secure
environment, I'm planning on using i2pd which is based on C++.

My main use would be to use I2p for torrenting, would installing qBittorent in
an AppVM that is connected to the i2p NetVM be sufficient?

Thanks for reading,

Best wishes,
