[qubes-users] Cant format private Win10 disk as NTFS, only FAT and FAT32 works

2020-04-06 Thread Guerlan
After creating my Win10 VM template and installing qubes-windows-tools I
created a new VM based on this template. I then entered it and tried to
format the private disk as NTFS, but it won't work: "Windows was unable to
complete the format".

FAt and FAT32 work!

How can I format in NTFS? And which one should I use: NTFS, FAT or FAT32?

[qubes-users] No internet on win10 after installing qubes-windows-tools

2020-04-06 Thread Guerlan
After installing qubes-windows-tools and restarting, I have no internet.
I tried setting up the netwrok settings from my qube settings on the
windows 10 network manager, but when I click to save, I get a warning
saying that gateway is not in the same subnet as the ip address. I give ok
and apply the settings but they wont work

Re: [qubes-users] What does ISP see when my computer connects?

2020-04-06 Thread rickey
MAC- address is layer- 2 address and it is "staying" into your local
network. If you are in a place where the administrator having ip- addresses
assigned by dhcp (or manually) always on the same pc, based on the mac, you
most probably would like to spoof it so to be different than the expected
one. if they use sso though, will be a problem, because when you change
your mac- you still will be using your assigned credentials to access the
network, and Internet so the admin will know that your computer has
different mac. some, even block the macs- which are not "known". as Steve
Coleman has mentioned spoofing it in publicly accessible networks will
randomize your laptop. if a further check occur, keep in mind that nowadays
there are cameras everywhere, and they might show you are using your laptop
at certain time, so if the mac cannot be found, I guess there will be more
questions then.

Clonezilla is working very well with all OSes' cloning (even with multi-

No. I installed CentOS to a StandaloneVM from virtual CD to get the
native kernel. Requires 2GB RAM for the VM though to work.

2020-04-06 Thread Catacombs
I started to do that. Good idea. But I recalled. Long ago. That Apple
support, when I had it, told me to never copy USB to USB. I guess because it
overheats the USB innards.

Maybe you meant start install iso from inside an os in laptop. Like inside an
App VM. And install from there. Hmm. Should work faster.

I will try different Linux distros to see if they have a Clone software. I
vaguely recall that Mint Linux had an easy to use Clone Disk program 19 months
ago. Maybe I should study up on dd command.

I just thought someone might have recently done the Clone. Else I am just
trying things. I only have so much time for Qubes.

Nobody but your local router will ever see your MAC address. If your
machine is behind a firewall then they will only see the IP address of
your cable modem or firewall, depending on how you connect to the
Internet. Very likely you have no control over the IP address that
your Internet provider assigned to your own equipment.

People who spoof/randomize their MAC address are generally concerned
with use-cases where the need to connect to a public WiFi where the
MAC address is announced on that untrusted WiFi router such as at an
internet cafe or coffee shop. In that case randomization of the MAC
can help to somewhat hide your identity, or at least make it less
predictable as to which MAC address connection is actually yours. Any
logging of session would only have captured some random MAC address
which is not in any way tied to your physical WiFi card NIC.

If you care about your assigned IP address being visible to the
websites that you visit then you should look into setting up a VPN, in
which case your address on the internet will always appear as a random
address at your VPN provider, or one of the hosts that they rent for
network services. In other words, it will never be your own IP
address, or internet providers, but rather one that is shared with
many thousands of other people on a rotational basis.

Please do us all a favor and clearly tell us what solved this. Meaning only try
one thing at a time. I see a lot of posts like this. I had the error message
and I can not tell you which I did to solve it. But it is time to amass a data
base of what works. What causes error.

I have read that some say they started the target computer in UEFI mode.
(Secure Boot) and the install simply worked.

My laptop says it will try Legacy and then UEFI mode. And I did several other
things at the same time, so I do not know.

Why not simply boot from The Qubes install media and install Qubes
onto the USB drive, and then restore your choice of AppVM's from an
existing backup of your main system? This will have the added benefit
of actually testing your 'disaster recovery plan' without having to
change or modify your main installation. You will then be more
confident in your own ability to recover from an actual disaster and
will have a way to boot your computer to correct any damage done
during future software upgrades.

If the Windows GUI-window doesn't show up, you can try execute the
following command in the dom0 terminal: qvm-features gui 1 .
Write the name of the domain (for example "Win10"), instead of

I don't know about the rest.

Else you may try to setup the Win10 HVM the same way I have done - see my
post here:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/qubes-users/78DgmWxZf80/L8cJA2BUAwAJ
That way seems to work fine.

[qubes-users] nuc hades canyon - intel vt-d, and virtualization are on and still showing the IOMMU error

2020-04-06 Thread rickey
Good morning Everyone,

I am testing if Intel Nuc Hades Canyon will be able to host Qubes OS. I am
trying to install, and test it from a USB- device as Claudia, and unman has
suggested some time ago.
Even though Intel Virtualization, and VT-D are on I still have the IOMMU's
error message appearing at the beginning of my installation. I have read
some posts, and they explained that basically this model's BIOS does not
support Legacy Boot because the requisite CSM module is not included. If
this might be the reason ? I also have prepared an installation usb in non-
csm mode but I cannot start the installation from it - the usb is not
"visible" into the list of the bootable devices then.
For the preparation both bootable usbs, I have used Rufus 3.9.

Please, give a hand with this issue if you think that there are more
parameters I could check into the BIOS.

Thank you, and Best Regards,

rickey
