Thank you for the response. It actually ended up that cron did not like
executing a script, I just put the exact same line from the script
directly into cron.

You can also put (executable) scripts directly in /etc/cron.daily or
.weekly and they should run without having to mess with crontab.

Best, P

Was your original sys-usb also based on fed32, and can you attach other
usb devices to AppVMs or do they all fail the same way? If not, it could
be a difference in drivers between fed32 and what you were using
previously. Also, double-check you have both qubes-usb-proxy and
qubes-input-proxy-sender installed in your template.

It's only for standalone VMs IIRC.
Uninstalling them shouldn't hurt if you don't use any standalone VM.

The VM's package manager can be told not to update specified packages,
if that is what you want.

Like David suggests, leaving them installed can help if you ever want to
convert/clone the template to a standalone.

Re: [qubes-users] new xen kernel 5.xx

2020-12-21 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

haaber:

I have still instabilities with the xen kernels 5.x (sudden system
freeze). I also have a small /boot and hold only the last 3 kernels.
They are right now:

vmlinuz-4.19.155-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64
vmlinuz-5.4.78-1.qubes.x86_64
vmlinuz-5.4.83-1.qubes.x86_64

I would like to mark the (for me very stable) kernel 4.19.155 as "do not
erase while updating" and remove the (for me) useless kernel
vmlinuz-5.4.78-1.qubes.x86_64. How can I do that, please?  I fear to
make a mess when just "playing around". I also want to keep 5.x kernels
for appVM's (they work well).   Thank you!

I think I was able to keep an older version around before by (very
carefully) uninstalling the middle version from dom0, as it keeps 3
copies by default. I believe I used dnf and specified the exact version
to remove.

Sometimes it helps to restart the VM that is handling updates (often
sys-whonix or sys-firewall) to force it to refresh the metadata if it's
not finding a recently published package. Can also reboot Qubes to
accomplish the same.

Re: [qubes-users] LVM thinpool issue: no volume groups found lvs -av

2020-12-21 Thread 'awokd' via qubes-users

Haisam Khalil:

Ok so here’s the story. Tlaurion was helpful enough over the past few days
to get me here, but now I’m stuck.

Issue: It started with an lvm thinpool issue I thought I solved by deleting
excess appVMs and fstrim’ing everything, including dom0. I updated dom0 one
day, did the usual dance with signing checksums, etc. I turned off power to
the laptop while booting up again, because I forgot to actually verify my
totp at the HEADS menu instead of just letting it load up. I reboot hoping
to just load up like I usually. All of a sudden, I’m in the dracut
emergency shell for the first time.

From there we were in trouble. We tried and failed to successfully repair
qubes_dom0/pool00 following some instructions we sorted.

Today when I run a lvs -av, no volume groups are found.

I will be able to reply to this post directly and provide screenshots of
everything done prior to this. But it’s this new issue that seems to be a
show stopper for me. Can I salvage this? Or do I just reinstall and call it
lost?

Let me know and thank you.

Did you do a "vgchange -ay" to activate whatever's available? Does pvs
list any?

It is a standard VM depending on a template that works with other VMs.

No, checking again if I put multimedia dependent from another template
works, so the problem is the template.

Last thing I did with the template was install a custom disposable VM
connected with the template. I did not know that this may end damaging the
template.

Disposable VM settings shouldn't affect the template. What happens if
you try to run nautilus from a terminal session to "multimedia"? If it
doesn't start, that's the issue.

If you have the monitor connected and powered on before booting the

has some possibility of breaking other things, but might be worth a try.

using "find". to find *files* "f" (in contrast with "d") older than 30
days that are called backup*.luks, it would be

  find /path -type f -iname backup\*.luks -mtime +30 -print

the word "-print" displays them.

Rem1: The first "*" must be backslashed in the find command, you don't

Rem2: careful with auto-delete (don't complain :)
  you replace -print by -delete

If the WiFi is connected to sys-net it will not be "turned on" unless
you start sys-net. You can test this by scanning your system with

If they use a wrong certificate for a MITM attack they might decode your
connection... It means nobody between you and the "next endpoint" can
read your password, but how to ensure what the "next endpoint" really is?

Ulrich is right. First, look at the "certificate story". These are meant
ensuring that you can trust your endpoint. Certificates are
pre-installed in your browser, and one should check (and rarely does)
which ones to trust (and how much). Invented examples: If they are owned
by chinese or russian telecom company, do you trust it? State agencies
could intervene. Or british telecom (5eyes??). The actually used
hierarchical trust model might be a failure by design.

And then there are exploits. Example: some years ago Moxi Marlinspike
found the funny zero-byte error due to string handling: He proved that
you could buy for example the domain "com",0,"mand.org" and have the
trusted instances sign your subdomain google.com",0",mand.org" which
any firefox (at least) did recognise as valid certificate for google.com
since they considered the 0 byte as "end of string". You are not safe
from such type of exploits.

Conclusion as usual: if your life depends on it, do not trust https.

Re: [qubes-users] Why isn't it possible to manually control if the pc should enable networking and wi-fy at login or not ?

2020-12-21 Thread Morten Eyrich
Yes, I could do as you suggest unman.

But the pc's wi-fy will still be turned on and thereby it will be able to
connect to it.

So I would like to change this so that every time the pc is turned on, I
will have to turn my wi-fy and network connection on.

My question is then: How can I do that ?

Re: [EXT] [qubes-users] How do you stream and whatch mp4-video's in your Firefox Browser ?

2020-12-21 Thread Morten Eyrich
Browser: Mozilla Firefox.

I found out: Just use the Firefox browser in the Debian template. Then it's
no problem.
