Re: [qubes-users] Help, I broke my Qubes...

2019-11-21 Thread 'Zeko' via qubes-users
Sorry about the delay, I had a week of ddrescuing a failing drive to distract
me. I've managed to boot the Qubes DVD (EFI settings were originally preventing
me) but didn't get the rescue process to work, it keeps asking me for passwords
to non-Qubes luks partitions. I can open the partition with the password tho.

Booted it without "rhgb quiet" and it gets to "Starting Start Qubes VM
sys-usb", prints some messages about seizing and disconnecting a bunch of USB
devices, then:

[ OK ] Stopped target Local File Systems
Unmounting /boot... (if it matters, boot is on a USB device)
[ 172.272900 ] usb 1-12: USB disconnect, device number 3
[ OK ] Unmounted /boot.
[ OK ] Stopped File System Check on /dev/disk/by-uuid/... (haven't yet figured
out which partition this is)
[ 172.287911 ] usb 1-13: USB disconnect, device number 4

Then a wall of text scrolls by too fast and ends with "Kernel Panic!" and a
dump of CPU registers, and the machine reboots.

The cause of this all is me installing sys-usb following Qubes website
instructions, because the instructions said not to do that if you have both USB
mouse and kbd and I do and/or because one step of the install failed but I
still rebooted my PC without trying to revert changes in dom0.

Thanks Claudia, it was only the keyboard layout. Should've thought of that
myself *facepalm*

Do you know if there's a documented way to turn the /dev/dm-* volumes into
something the Qubes backup/restore utility understands? I have over 100 VMs and
I'd prefer not to open each one up and copy the contents manually

[qubes-users] Recovering data from unbootable Qubes install

2019-11-09 Thread 'Zeko' via qubes-users
Hello

I managed to screw up my Qubes install and it fails at boot, resetting every
time. However, that happens after the partition gets mounted and I screwed it
up without having my /boot partition (a USB pendrive, since I multiboot)
mounted, so I expect I'll be able to mount the Qubes encrypted partition
somehow based on the data on the boot pendrive and the disk password.

I've tried simply unlocking the partition with a Linux recovery live CD by
inputting the disk password as the LUKS passphrase but I get the reply: "No key
available with this passphrase."

What do I need to do on the /boot filesystem to get to the LUKS passphrase? I
need these files :(

[qubes-users] Help, I broke my Qubes...

2019-11-08 Thread 'Zeko' via qubes-users
Hello

I ran sudo qubesctl state.sls qvm.sys-usb on a LUKS install with USB keyboard
and mouse. (Yeah bad idea)

I use a removable drive to boot since I multiboot on that PC and the drive was
unmounted at the time so the command reported that 4 out of 5 steps succeeded
while grubconfig failed. Then I restarted to try again and get the grubconfig
done since remounting that drive as /boot never worked for some reason, didn't
bother with that this time. (worse idea)

At the moment Qubes will boot, I get to the first (disk) password screen and
the progress slider goes to about 60% and the computer resets.

Can anything be done? Unfortunately, my backups are a tad old. It seems I can
at least get it to unlock the LVM partition, though...

How do I do that? I'd've expected that to be harder :) But anyway, is KDE4
doable at all? 5 is kinda ugly, and I def wouldn't want it at all unless I can
get Oxygen icons going which so far I couldn't.

I've been using Qubes R4.0 for several months now and I'm getting tired of

[qubes-users] Putting /boot on a USB thumb drive

2018-05-17 Thread 'Zeko' via qubes-users
Hello guys

I'm thinking of ways to multiboot Qubes 4 safely on my laptop. Would it be
possible to install the /boot partition on a thumb drive while having the /
encrypted filesystem on an internal drive partition? This should not require
Anti-Evil Maid, right?

Also if this works, will I have to keep the thumb drive plugged in while Qubes
is running? It's a little awkward on a laptop.

Thanks for answers
