[qubes-users] Re: Qubes OS breaks when setting up initial VMs on Thinkpad T580

2020-08-02 Thread solworth%uic.edu via qubes-users
I'm running qubes on a T580. I did the install in March 2019, so I'm
relying on incomplete notes.

Note you must do (1) before (2), otherwise your T580 will be bricked.

1. Update bios to 1.18 or later
*2. Enable BIOS assist for Thunderbolt (make sure to use "Quick" boot mode)*
*3. Legacy boot*

*I believe that you must also have "OS optimized defaults" disabled. This
is AFAIK a windows only option.*

*best of luck*

[qubes-users] Audio Recording

2019-04-04 Thread solworth%uic.edu via qubes-users
I want to record lectures, both audio and slides. I've installed open broadcast
software, and it works well if the microphone is working.

I haven't gotten the microphone to work reliably in Qubes 4.0. My question is:

1. What are the steps to make the microphone work and attach it to a app-vm?
2. Is this scriptable?

I have a thinkpad t580 and I'm using i3wm.

thanks,
Jon

[qubes-users] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T580

2019-03-27 Thread solworth%uic.edu via qubes-users
Well suspend seems to be working after all, but it works differently than the
T570. For one, wakes up much faster. Also, previous Qubes HCL report was that
it didn't work.

I'm curious why the X1 carbon needs a linux mode, but the T580 does not.

[qubes-users] Lenovo Thinkpad T580

2019-03-27 Thread solworth%uic.edu via qubes-users
I've installed Qubes 4.0 on a Lenovo T580, using a legacy (non UEFI) install.

The BIOS version is 1.18. I enabled "Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode" and made
sure the boot mode was "Quick". (There was a very nasty bug which would brick
the T580 on older bioses, when boot mode was "Diagnostic". See:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-X1-Yoga-3rd-Gen-Stuck-at-Black-Screen-After-Enabling/m-p/4255694/highlight/true#M92166

My BIOS version should not require that, but given the severity of the problem,
I was conservative in my settings.

The computer seems to work with two exceptions:

1. When I boot, I generally do it with an attached thunderbolt screen.
When I do this on the T580, I get a blank screen with cursor on both
the attached and notebook screen. Clicking with the mouse makes the
normal login screen visible and usable.

2. Suspend does not work for me. (Unlike the X1 carbon, the BIOS does not
appear to have a Linux power setting).

The first issue is no big deal, but it would really be great to know how to
fix the second.

thanks,
Jon

Yes, i3 works very well with multiple monitors. I use my notebook in three
different configurations, standalone, dual (with a large external monitor) and
clone (hdmi same as screen).

i3 does layout to use the whole screen, partitioning as necessary. In my dual
configuration, each screen is managed separately. You can pair screens
independently, one on the notebook and one on the external display. You can
reconfigure between the two using xrandr.

I'm driving a monitor from my usb-c port (although the cable converts it to
HDMI). I would start with looking at the output of xrandr. On my computer, I
see a listing for DP1.

If you install arandr in dom0 you'll get an easier to use interface.
