I would also suggest mplayer for performance if MPV does not work for you.

Actually I have the same problem since I started use Qubes OS on my laptop. 
And after all my tries I gave up and installed another player - mpv Media 
PLayer, which is ok and also has no delays  in playing the video.

So your problem is that once you go black, you can never go back?

I'd like to help but I can't say I've experienced that myself. 

Have you considered upgrading to Debian 10?
