[R] Concatenating elements from lists via combinations

Dear R-help list,

I have a problem in which I would like to concatenate elements from lists in
a combinational order. For example, I have a list of n character vectors
(here 3), each with m elements (here 7,3,1):

lst - list(c(a,aB,aBC,aC,B,BC,C), c(B,Bc,c), c(D))

[[1]]
[1] a   aB  aBC aC  B   BC  C  
[[2]]
[1] B  Bc c 
[[3]]
[1] D

As the first list element has seven, the second has three and the third has
one element, there are 21 different combinations of the individual vector
elements: 

idx - expand.grid(1:7,1:3,1:1)

   Var1 Var2 Var3
1 111
2 211
. ...
6 611
7 711
8 121
9 221
. ...
20631
21731

How could I create an exhaustive list of length 21 now, each of whose
elements contains a unique combination of vector elements? I.e., the final
list should look like this

[[1]]
[1] a B D  
[[2]]
[1] aB B D 
[[3]]
[1] aBC B D
[[4]]
[1] aC B D
.
[[21]]
[1] C c D

I'm not sure how you mean this. Maybe a more general description of my problem 
is helpful for clarifying.

What I have to deal with are truth table output functions that always take, for 
example, the following form:

Delta - (a*B+a*C*d=Y)*(E+e)

I.e. these functions will always have the structure (.*.+.*.+...=.)*(.+.), 
where the dots in the antecedent could be further conjunctions of unspecified 
complexity. I now need to filter all rows from the truth table that are 
compatible with this output function. To create the input part of the truth 
table tt for Delta above, I do:

library(QCA) # createMatrix() function is part of this package
Delta.upper - toupper(Delta)
f.names - unique(unlist(strsplit(Delta.upper, [(*+=)])))
f.names - f.names[f.names != ]
tt - data.frame(createMatrix(rep(2, length(f.names
dimnames(tt) - list(as.character(seq(2^length(f.names))), f.names)
tt

I now need to transform Delta into a string of the following form in order to 
extract the subset of compatible rows from tt:

pmin(pmax(pmin(1-tt$A,tt$B),pmin(1-tt$A,tt$C,1-tt$D))==tt$Y,pmax(tt$E,1-tt$E))==TRUE

With this string, I can then do:

 tt[pmin(pmax(pmin(1-tt$A,tt$B), 
 pmin(1-tt$A,tt$C,1-tt$D))==tt$Y,pmax(tt$E,1-tt$E))==TRUE, ]

Dear Alrik

This may seem a silly suggestion but why not just define new functions 
PMIN and PMAX to call pmin and pmax. Obviously that does not solve your 
problem if it is more general than your example.

Your original problem statement seemed to me to be one of wanting to 
transform all the lower case identifiers to upper except for pmin and 
pmax. My suggestion was not to bother and transform everything and then 
define PMIN and PMAX.

Replace the + (i.e. 1 or more) in the pattern with a * (i.e. 0 or more):

   x - pmin(pmax(pmin(a,B),pmin(a,C,d))==Y,pmax(E,e))

they’re only created from other strings. Would I first have to transform these

the expression directly with functions like all.names() and substitute().

[R] Subsets of Boolean string model

Dear R-help list,

I have a problem regarding text manipulation in R, where my basic knowledge
doesn't suffice anymore. It might be a bigger problem, but any help would be
greatly appreciated and acknowledged.

As input, I have a character string representing some Boolean function, such
as aB+Bc+D, for instance, where + means OR, AND has been omitted between
two factors represented by single letters, and lower-case x simply means
NOT X.

Now I would like to form all sub-models without including models that are
not redundancy-free. For example, D, a+D and B+c+D would be ok, but
aB+B+D, B+Bc and B+B+D would not because B is a (strict) superset of
both aB and Bc as well as a (trivial) superset of B.

With regards to D+aB+Bc, there would thus be 24 permissible and unique
sub-models (including the empty set):

a, B, c, D, aB, Bc, a+B, a+c, a+D, B+c, B+D, c+D,
a+Bc, aB+c, aB+D, aB+Bc, Bc+D, a+B+D, a+c+D, a+Bc+D,
aB+c+D, B+c+D, aB+Bc+D, .

How could I generate a character vector of all permissible and unique
sub-models from any Boolean function of the form given above?

[R] Two functions plotted in wireframe

Hi together,
 
I have some graphical problems.
 
I would like to add a semi-transparent surface at z=1 to an existing lattice
wireframe plotting a general function z=f(x,y).
Any suggestions on how this can be done?
