[Yes, indeed, impressively so, as unchanged non-archived CRAN package.] Indeed, the C code in powell does printf(<warning_msg>) which is not good. Rather it should use R's API for warning messages -- as these work on all platforms, also inside GUIs -- and also as the user can then use suppresWarnings(.) etc. This will definitely not go away with R 3.3.0 or any later version of R.
