Hi everyone, Thanks for all of the input, I think between that and the eduroam paper my questions have been answered. The breakdown of differences between various clients is rather useful as well.
Even in the absence of client side configuration, some of the clients (notably OS X) present some details about the cert to the user that they can verify manually (name, fingerprint, expiry date).
