Armyn Paimin, an official with the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency, was quoted by the official Antara news agency as saying that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Paimin said the temblor hit at 3:55 a.m. local time, 20 miles beneath the Indian Ocean, and 270 miles northwest of Jakarta. He said the quake was worst felt in the town of Bengkulu, where a 7.9 magnitude temblor on June 4 killed about 100 people and left thousands homeless. Sunday's quake was the latest in a series of seismic upheavals that have rocked the world's largest archipelagic nation in the past month.
