Rescuers Search Straits of Malacca

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Rescuers searched
the Straits of
Malacca on Saturday for about 38 people missing
and feared drowned
after a crowded boat capsized on its way from
Indonesia to Malaysia,
maritime officials said.
Eight bodies had been recovered and 34 people
rescued so far,
officials said. News reports said most of the
missing passengers may
have drowned in the rough seas.
The fiberglass fishing boat, carrying up to 80
people, was hit by
strong waves after it left Dumai on the
Indonesian island of Sumatra
and went down close to the Malaysian shore
Wednesday night.
Merchant vessels noticed survivors and alerted
marine police.
Officials believe the ship was carrying
Indonesians who were trying
to illegally enter Malaysia.
At least 27 Indonesians have been rescued, said
an Indonesian navy
officer, Sgt. Mulyadi who, like many
Indonesians, uses one name.
Seven others were rescued by Malaysian boats.
Seven bodies were found by Indonesian rescuers,
while Malaysian
police found the body of a woman within the
wreckage of the boat,
which was towed to the nearby town of Port
Dickson, about 40 miles
south of Kuala Lumpur.
``The search and rescue is still going on. We've
alerted all merchant
ships that are passing by the Straits of Malacca
to be on the lookout
for survivors or bodies,'' said S. Arumugam, an
officer at Kuala
Lumpur's Maritime Rescue and Coordinating Center.
Arumugam said many survivors may have reached
the shores safely
without the knowledge of the authorities.
``Because they are illegal immigrants, they
might have tried to make
their own way back to Indonesian shores.''
Six of the seven people rescued by Malaysian
boats were admitted to a
hospital near Port Dickson. All were later
brought to a district police
station for questioning.
``Once investigations are over, they will be
sent over (to) the
immigration office for deportation next week,''
said police spokesman
Khairuddin Harahap.
Cumbani, a survivor from East Java, said the
boat left Dumai for
Malaysia late Tuesday but turned back after it
developed engine
trouble. It capsized several hours later.
``I don't know what happened to the others after
the boat overturned,''
she said. ``Probably many died.''
Malaysia, a country of 22 million, employs
nearly 2 million foreign
workers, mostly from Indonesia. Thousands of
Indonesians also work
illegally in Malaysia, mostly as house maids and
construction
laborers.
Police routinely arrest illegal immigrants and
deport them across the
45-mile stretch of water that separates
peninsular Malaysia from
Sumatra.
