[RBW] Re: Silver shifter questions

2009-04-06 Thread CycloFiend

on 4/5/09 7:11 AM, Mike at mjawn...@gmail.com wrote:
My Rambouillet has DT Silver shifters and ghost shifts now and then.
Is it frame flex or a just a slightly miss aligned shift? I don't
know. It happens. I have cranked down on the d-rings. I have
absolutely no problems with ghost shifts on my Hilsen which has BE
Silver shifters. Still, I like friction shifting and I'm going to keep
 it that way.

The whole ghost shifting issue is an interesting one to me, and probably a
bit off the initial thread topic. I thought this topic cropped up before,
but it may have been an iBob thread.

There are a number of variables in the equation, to be sure:

- Modern 8/9/etc casettes are designed to be easy to shift. The individual
sprockets are designed to transfer the chain easily up and down under load.
Simply put, they _like_ to shift. Like some of you, I learned to shift on 5
speed freewheels, which generally took learning the technique of easing up
during the shift (sometimes stomping hard before shifting, so you could ease
up on a climb for a revolution or two), and applying smooth pressure after
the shift.

- There is a load of info on early shifting systems in _The Dancing Chain_
by Frank Berto and on the web as well. A major component of this type of
system is an upper pulley with lateral float. There has to be play in the
system for it to work properly. I believe that every rear derailleur made
recently has this.

- Any rear sprocket set that has eight speeds or higher is spread pretty
wide, if you look at it from the top down. That means that the chain must
deflect more significantly with the higher gear systems. If the chainstay
is shorter, the angle of deflection will be greater.

- In order to shift, you must shorten or lengthen the cable. I'm not sure
how the rider input could torque the bicycle frame in a manner which would
cause this to happen.

- Slightly loose hubs, cassettes, freehub (where it attaches to the hub),
shifting of the wheel in the dropouts (such as the QR not fully engaged or
slipping on thick paint), even loose cranks or bottom bracket would be more
likely to cause movement of the sprockets, and could induce the chain to
find the ramp.

- A bent derailleur hanger is usually more of an issue with indexed systems,
but it's worth looking at this. Occasionally, you will see one with a slight
twist, which will cause some oddness and places where (combined with the
floating pulley) the chain just doesn't want to stay put.

- The loop at the rear derailleur is also a variable to watch. It's easy to
not seat either end of the housing. Gunk tends to get into that section of
cable pretty readily. It tends to be the part that restricts free cable
movement, which can be an issue of non-shifting in indexed systems and
imprecise shifting in friction.

My Hilsen had a hiccup or two. I wasn't sure if it was user innaccuracy, so
I've swapped pulleys on my rear derailleur so the fixed one is on the top,
dropped a link set to run a slightly shorter chain. Hasn't done it since,
even in pretty nasty conditions.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/3285966758

I also think there's a vestigial technique from the freewheel days, which
seems to help a bit. But, there definitely isn't much audible feedback from
a non-trimmed shift. Some of that may be the rock and roll over the
years, but the whole dang thing is quieter to the rider. Unlike the older
freewheel systems where you had to overshift and trim, the current
drivetrains like to be teased into gear. I find undershifting and smidge
seems to work best.

- Jim who rode his Quickbeam fixed Saturday and his MB singlespeed today,
so really has no business talking about shifting systems until he stops
doing house projects and gets his Hilsen rigged back up.

[RBW] Re: Sackville SaddleSack Large... initial experiences

2009-04-06 Thread usuk2007

If you order from the UK the Nelson Longflap and the Camper Longflap
can be had for 50 pounds. At current exchange rates thats $75. I
looked into it further and delivery costs a whopping 30 pounds making
the total is $112 once VAT is taken off. So the 50% saving doesn't
hold up with delivery, but it's still a good buy and
there's just something about the Sackvilles that turns me off, just a
personal aesthetics thing.

I have a Carradice bag that is ok.
The one thing that frustrates me about it is the crummy hardware they
use.
The strap buckles are made out of something akin to coffee can metal.
My Riv bags don't have crummy hardware.

2009-04-06 Thread KevinInBoston

Thanks for the helpful review Thomas. I've been thinking about getting
a Sackville Large for exactly the same purpose. It sounds great except
for the difficult off-bike carrying (which I do a lot of, plus I'm
probably half your size - 132lbs).

Question for you: do you find that a lot of clearance between the
saddle loops and the rack is required? I only have 9.5 of clearance,
and some bags require more (the Riv site explicitly requires 10 for
the NS Big Box bag, I think, and the Sackville Large is even larger).

Thanks,

I strongly recommend little package caps out of portland, oregon.

Caroline has made me two wonderful quality wool caps that I wear most every
day on the bicycle for nearly a year now--I have a 64.5cm head
circumference, so that gives you an idea of how badly I needed a custom (8+

She'll ask for your circumference as well as the distance from the top of
each ear over the top of the head.

Great prices too!

[RBW] 56 Quickbeam $1,000

2009-04-06 Thread rcnute

Frame/fork: 56 cm; orange. The paint is not perfect and was touched up
by the prior owner in several spots; overall I'd say the paint is
good. The right chainstay has marks underneath where I suspect a
chain broke and scratched the paint. I touched it up with nail polish
to protect it. There is a ding in the top bottle cage boss on the seat
tube, apparently put there when the bike was shipped to me. I took it
to Bill Davidson (Seattle builder) and he said while it couldn't be
rolled out it was only cosmetic and not structural. For what it's
worth the ding is hard to see when you put a bottle cage over it.

The rest: Phil hubs (very nice), large flange, Mavic rims. The rear
hub is not fixed/free, but for two freewheels. The freewheels are
White Industries and 18/19, I believe. Jack Brown (blue version)
tires. The crankset is 170mm; the stock Sugino model with two
chainrings and a bash guard. No pedals. Headset is a plain Tange. I
have a 100 Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem with 44 mm Noodles (may have
some other stem/bar combo depending on your needs). Dura-Ace levers.
Plain but functional Shimano cantis with new Koolstop salmon pads.
Nitto Crystal Fellow seatpost. No saddle unless you want an old
cheapie. Oh, and Berthoud stainless fenders and rear Tubus rack
(black).

Let me know if you are interested in some or all (I can use the parts
other than the frame/fork/headset/fenders).

Shipping at cost. PayPal is fine if you split the fee with me.

Email for photos or with questions. Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Phil riv hub 32 hole velocity aerohead wheelset w/ IRD 7sp freewheel

2009-04-06 Thread Bob H.

Built this as a second go fast wheelset for my Hilsen, but ended up
not seeing much use. Beautiful wheels hand built by our local wheel
guru. About 500 miles on these. No skewers. 135 spacing, great for
your Homer, Sam Hillborne or big boy Atlantis (sizes that take 700c).

Total cost for wheels new, about $600
Phil riv front hub, 32H - $160
Phil riv rear hub 135 7sp, 32H - $180
Velocity Aerohead 700c rims (silver) - $50 x 2 = $100
IRD 7sp Freewheel 13x28 - $50
Spokes x 64 = $64
Built Cost = $30 x 2 = $60

They can go to a new home and make your Homer happy for $450 shipped
in the continental 48.

I'll toss in a set of VERY lightly used (less than 250 miles) Pasela
folding tour guard 28mm tires for an additional $25.

--Kish - builder in San Luis Obispo, I liked his rigid drop bar

--Nobliette/Rene Herse booth - neat sampling of equipment

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of high-end mixtes there.
I'm glad to see the different designs and to see the concept get the

Overall, I was more interested in (1) talking to the builders and

I just received a Carradice Super C saddlebag from SJS Cycles in
England -- paid $113 total with shipping. I plan to use it for day/
light touring and commuting (sans laptop computer) with my AHH (I've
got Arkels that I put on my All-Rounder). Agree about the appearance
of the hardware compared to Baggins, Sackville, et al, but we'll see
how it actually stands up. The Super C has four plastic D rings on the
lid, which will be handy for a shoulder strap. After some use later
this spring, I may post a review/impressions. I did think the price
was right compared to some other options -- but I'm also not
pretending that this bag is of the overall super quality of those
offered by Rivendell. Had a Paladin once and sold it -- shouldn't
have! -- Forrest (Iowa City)

 so.

[RBW] Re: San Diego Custom Bicycle Show - this weekend, Riv ride Sunday

2009-04-06 Thread Doug Peterson

Dave:

That guy from San Dimas is Bill Ryder and was really helpful. He had frames
with integrated racks, painted to match. Very clean, no eyelets or
fasteners cluttering things up and the matching paint really makes the racks
look like they belong on the bike. He showed us how he'd worked out the
wiring thru the tubing for the lights. Very thoughtful designs.

Our next adventure is April 19 in Orange County. Meet at the Irvine train
station, ride the Santiago Canyon loop, jog over to Mission Viejo for a
pilgrimage to the start/finish line of the '84 Olympic road course, and back
to Irvine. 40 rolly miles. This part of Southern California is as green as
it gets right now.

Sunday

I went with my wife, my 1 year-old, and a longtime friend who lives in
San Diego. It was the first bike show any of us ever attended, and it
was fun. My daughter practiced walking among the different booths, so
she had fun, too.

I enjoyed the following booths:
--Calfee - talking to Craig Calfee about the bamboo bikes was
absorbing, and he's a nice guy to boot
--Winter Cycles - nice styling, good touring/randonneur bikes, very
friendly
--Kish - builder in San Luis Obispo, I liked his rigid drop bar
mountain bike
--Sendero - fun guy, with a couple adventure bikes, one with Surly
Endomorphs
--can't remember his name, but an older builder in San Dimas. Didn't
know any builders were there.
--Nobliette/Rene Herse booth - neat sampling of equipment

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of high-end mixtes there.
I'm glad to see the different designs and to see the concept get the
respect it deserves.

Overall, I was more interested in (1) talking to the builders and
designers and enjoying their enthusiasm, and (2) getting an injection
of bike culture since I live in the Southern California San Gabriels/
Inland Empire, where I never feel part of a bike culture. It's
relieving to be around so many cyclists.

This is why I really need to go on one of the rides planned by David
Estes.

best,
Dave Carroll
