[RBW] Re: change of tires makes a difference

2009-06-02 Thread clevewheel

IMO the Paselas are by far and away the better quality tire. I run
them exclusively on my commuter. The non-TG version is, I believe,
even nicer, but for commuting I need the flat protection. BQ did
their own version of rolling resistance, and if I remember correctly
the Pasela came in only slightly behind the really expensive high end
tires. That said, there is no comparison between a Hetre and anything
else out there.

TG - folding bead in 32mm. My LBS had them quite inexpensive at
$30/each. Popped them on, pumped them up to about 75-80psi and went
 for a couple of rides.

 Things I noticed:
  1. the atlantis feels a fair bit zippier.
  2. the ride doesn't feel significantly rougher with the smaller tires.
  3. I need  to lower the fenders to have them fit better :)

So now what I'm wondering is:
  1. Is the ride improved b/c the width is smaller?
  2. is the ride improved b/c of the more supple sidewall?
  3. Anyone else with similar experiences?

[RBW] Bay Area Riding - first week of June

2009-06-02 Thread Esteban

Hi, folks.
I took the Protovelo, now with drops, for its first trip to the Bay
Area (we're up here 4-5 times a year). So, I've worked it out, and
I'm riding Mt. Diablo today, and so far, I have tentatively planned:

Berkeley tomorrow morning-ish (maybe on my folder)
Marin Thursday afternoon, starting at Mill Valley, riding around,
ending backin San Francisco
Headlands, maybe, with my father-in-law Saturday
Napa on Monday

If anyone knows any particularly good routes, or of any group rides
going on this week or community events, let me know. I'm stoked:

lighter tire. so, if a ride calls for plush comfort and you want
something that rolls a little quicker, i'd go with the cypres.

FWIW, i did a 400k on hetres this past saturday, and I had a great
ride on them - it's a superfun tire and I'll probably always keep one
dedicated hetre bike in the stable. I just think the cypres is a
better all-round tire, all things considered - it's really
comfortable, fast, and 32mm is wide enough to handle just about
anything out there.

Esteban,

contact me off list, I can set you up with a great route out of
berkeley depending on the distance, difficulty and amount of time you
have. I can also point you to some mixed terrain here if you are
interested. If you are in marin, don't miss Mt Tam; many people
(including myself) on this list can give you directions. Take your
protovelo to Berkeley, the roads here deserve a bike like that.

It's a nice loop, but exercise caution, as the roads are narrow, the
cliffs steep, and drivers often think they are Mario Andretti:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaoU96BKcSM

You could also stitch the Pinehurst loop together with Wildcat Canyon.
And depending on your legs, I think there is a way to combine all of
them with the San Pablo Reservoir and the Briones Reservoir and park
area. I can't remember what that loop is called. I think it's called
the Three Bears or something like that. It goes out on Bear Creek Rd.,
 Alhambra Valley Rd., etc.

[RBW] Summer dressing part two

2009-06-02 Thread b hamon
Okay. I've selected the VO fenders. Measuring them against my existing brakes
it will be an EXTREMELY tight fit. I may be compelled to switch over to
center-pull brakes, not my favorite in terms of on-the-fly adjustment. So far
all I've been able to snag around here are a pair of the long-reach Dia-Compe
750's, which I guess will work (though the pads will sit high and there will be
a LOT of metal underneath).

I don't have the budget to add braze-ons to my ten-year-old frame (for
center-pulls OR cantis). Has anyone used these without brazing to the frame?
Are they any better than the center-pulls of my youth? Is there another option
which would work better in a similar price range? (Finding these used has
gotten much harder since folks began doing 650b conversions with them...)

[RBW] Re: Summer dressing part two

2009-06-02 Thread Jim Cloud

My Paramount P-15 was originally equipped with Schwinn Approved
centerpull brakes that were obviously made by Weinmann (they were
essentially the Vainqueur 999 model). I never experienced any
problems with braking on that bike with centerpulls, I switched to a
retrofitted set of Campy Record sidepull caliper brakes simply because
I had them and liked the appearance on my bike.

I think centerpull brakes got an undeserved reputation for
insufficient braking force primarily because many consumer bikes
(especially some of the heavier weight 10-Speed models made by
Schwinn and others) had the sweegee cheater brakes levers added for
ease of braking while on the tops of the bars. There is a
considerable loss of braking leverage when these types of levers were
used, hence the reputation for poor braking. Many manufacturers,
besides Schwinn, used Weinmann long reach rear brakes on their top-
line bikes, including the Raleigh International and Competition
models.

Pretty much, they are the centerpulls of your youth. However, if yours
didn't work very well that probably wasn't the fault of the brakes
themselves, because as brakes they're just fine. Cables and housings
weren't as good then as they are now, and (unless you were an early
Salmon adopter, either with Kool Stops or Matthausers) brake shoes
definitely weren't as good as they are now. Plus, most of those
centerpulls were set up with sucky levers with safety assist aka
suicide levers. All in all, you didn't get much of the potential of
those brakes.

I'm surprised you aren't simply awash in Mafac Racers. They came on so
many trash 10-speeds. And yet, aside from the sucker pads, they're
splendid brakes -- good enough to be used on Rene Herse and Alex
Singers, and on Peter Weigles today.

Weinmann centerpulls were also used by Rene Herse on his finest

obtaining this bicycle was more than I could readily justify at the

[RBW] Re: Bay Area Riding - first week of June

2009-06-02 Thread Esteban

cool ideas - thanks! Franklyn, I'll try to send you a note.

 Esteban,

contact me off list, I can set you up with a great route out of
berkeley depending on the distance, difficulty and amount of time you
have. I can also point you to some mixed terrain here if you are
interested. If you are in marin, don't miss Mt Tam; many people
(including myself) on this list can give you directions. Take your
protovelo to Berkeley, the roads here deserve a bike like that.

There's the Pinehurst and Redwood Road loop. There are many ways to

someone put up on MapMyRide with a start in Berkeley:

It's a nice loop, but exercise caution, as the roads are narrow, the
cliffs steep, and drivers often think they are Mario Andretti:

You could also stitch the Pinehurst loop together with Wildcat Canyon.
And depending on your legs, I think there is a way to combine all of
them with the San Pablo Reservoir and the Briones Reservoir and park
area. I can't remember what that loop is called. I think it's called
the Three Bears or something like that. It goes out on Bear Creek Rd.,
  Alhambra Valley Rd., etc.

   Hi, folks.
I took the Protovelo, now with drops, for its first trip to the Bay
Area (we're up here 4-5 times a year).  So, I've worked it out, and
I'm riding Mt. Diablo today, and  so far, I have tentatively planned:

Berkeley tomorrow morning-ish (maybe on my folder)
Marin Thursday afternoon, starting at Mill Valley, riding around,
   ending backin San Francisco
Headlands, maybe, with my father-in-law Saturday
   Napa on Monday

If anyone knows any particularly good routes, or of any group rides
going on this week or community events, let me know.  I'm stoked:

[RBW] Re: change of tires makes a difference

2009-06-02 Thread jonathan

I'm looking for some great 25 x 1.5 inch tires. I'd ride the paselas
but I really want an all black tire. I was going to go w/ marathon
racers, but would love another suggestion. I'm riding t-servs in
26.1.25s now and have been pretty happy but would like a bit more
cushion. I previously have 26.1.5 Tourguard Paselas but found them a
bit heavy and sluggish.

That said, there is no comparison between a Hetre and anything else out
  there.

it depends on what you're after.  the Hetre is great on rough dirt
roads, but probably overkill on pavement or mixed terrain as the GB
650b 32mm (cypres) is also incredibly comfortable and a noticeably
lighter tire.  so, if a ride calls for plush comfort and you want
something that rolls a little quicker, i'd go with the cypres.

 How much do you weigh?
